  • Coatings of hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium phosphate/HA (TCP/HA) on titanium were fabricated by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD). Significant effect of the Ca-P coatings on human Gingival Fibroblasts (HGFs) attachment and formation of type I collagen were found by using immunofluorescence microscope. TCP/HA and HA coatings exerted more HGFs attachment and collagen I formation. Comparing with HA coating, TCP/HA coating exhibited better responses during the late period of the tests. This investigation indicated that this surface modification method may enhance the biological seal at the cervical level of the titanium dental implants.

  • Nano adhesion and friction between a Sj$_3$N$_4$ AFM tip and thin silver films were experimentally studied. Tests were performed to measure the nano adhesion and friction in both AFM(atomic force microscope) and LFM(lateral force microscope) modes in various ranges of normal load. Thin silver films deposited by IBAD (ion beam assisted deposition) on Si-wafer (100) and Si-wafer of different surface roughness were used. Results showed that nano adhesion and friction decreased as the surface roughness increased. When the Si surfaces were coated by pure silver, the adhesion and friction decreased. But the adhesion and friction were not affected by the thickness of IBAD silver coating. As the normal force increased, the adhesion forces of bare Si-wafer and IBAD silver coating film remained constant, but the friction forces increased linearly. Test results suggested that the friction was mainly governed by the adhesion as long as the normal load was low.

  • The band-gap opening in graphene is a key factor in developing graphene-based field effect transistors. Although graphene is a gapless semimetal, a band-gap opens when graphene is formed into a graphene nanoribbon (GNR). Moreover, the band-gap energy can be manipulated by the width of the GNR. In this study, we propose a site-specific synthesis of a width-tailored GNR directly onto an insulating substrate. Predeposition of a diamond-like carbon nanotemplate onto a SiO2/Si wafer via focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition is first utilized for growth of the GNR. These results may present a feasible route for growing a width-tailored GNR onto a specific region of an insulating substrate.

  • Ion beam assisted deposition(IBAD) technique was used to produce biaxially textured polycrystalline MgO thin films for high critical current YBCO coated conductor. Hastelloy tapes were continuous electropolished with very smooth surface for IBAD-MgO deposition, RMS roughness of Hastelloy tape values below 2 nm and local slope of less than $1^{\circ}$. After the polishing of the tape an amorphous $Y_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ are deposited Biaxially textured MgO was deposited on amorphous layer bye-beam evaporation with a simultaneous bombardment of high energy ions. We had developed the RHEED to measure in-situ biaxial texture of film surface as thin as tens angstrom. And also ex-situ characterization of buffer layers was studied using XRD and SEM. The full-width at half maximum(FWHM) out of plane texture of IBAD-MgO template is $4^{\circ}$.

  • Ni thin films on the p-InP (In) substrates were grown at room temperature by using the ion beam-assisted deposition. In order to determine the work function of the Ni thin films, the $\gamma$values were measured as functions of the acceleration voltages by using Ne, Ar, $N_2$. and Xe ion sources. The dependences of the values on various gases and on the acceleration voltages of the focused ion beam were obtained to determine the work function of the Ni thin films. The value of the work function of the Ni thin films grown on the p-InP (100) substrate was 5.8 eV ~ 5.85 eV. These results provide important information on the electronic properties of Ni thin films grown on p-InP (100) substrates at room temperature.

  • In order to improve the properties of high-temperature superconducting wire for superconducting cable system, we optimized the electro-polishing (EP), ion-beam assisted deposition (IBAD), superconducting (SC) layer, and baking (heat) treatment. The buffer layer was deposited on electro-polished substrate with RMS roughness ($R_{RMS}$) less than 5 nm. The IBAD process was carried out at $V_{beam}$: 1100 V and $V_{accel}$: 850 V that resulted in highly crystalline film of $LaMnO_3$. Chemical composition of SC layer is key to higher critical current, and we found that composition can be determined by surface color of SC layer. We adopt a proprietary contorl system based on RGB analysis of the surface and achieved critical current of 150 A/4 mm-width. The proposed baking treatment resulted in decreasing of about 10% of fraction defects.

  • With a collimated $CO_2$ laser beam, the bidirectional current switching was realized in a two-terminal electronic device based on a highly resistive vanadium dioxide($VO_2$) thin film. A $VO_2$ thin film was grown on a $Al_2O_3$ substrate by a pulsed laser deposition method. For the fabrication of a two-terminal electronic device, the $VO_2$ thin film was etched by an ion beam-assisted milling method, and the $VO_2$ device, of which $VO_2$ patch width and electrode separation were 50 and $100{\mu}m$, respectively, was fabricated through a photolithographic method. A bias voltage range for stable bidirectional current switching was found by using the current-voltage property of the device measured in a current-controlled mode. The transient responses of bidirectionally switched currents were analyzed when the laser was modulated at a variety of pulse widths and repetition rates. A switching contrast was measured as ~3333, and rising and falling times were measured as ~39 and ~21ms, respectively.

  • By incorporating a 966nm near infrared laser, we demonstrated bidirectional current triggering of between 0 and 10mA in a two-terminal planar device based on a highly resistive vanadium dioxide ($VO_2$) thin film grown by a pulsed laser deposition method. A two-terminal planar device, which had an electrode separation of $100{\mu}m$ and a $50{\mu}m-wide$ $VO_2$ conducting layer, was fabricated through ion beam-assisted milling and photolithographic techniques. A bias voltage range for stable bidirectional current triggering was determined by investigating the current-voltage curves of the $VO_2-based$ device in a current-controlled mode. Bidirectional current triggering of up to 10mA was realized by directly illuminating the $VO_2$ film with a focused infrared laser beam, and the transient responses of triggered currents were analyzed when the laser was modulated at various pulse widths and repetition rates. A switching contrast between off- and on-state currents was evaluated as ~3571, and the rising and falling times were measured as ~40 and ~20ms, respectively.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response of osteoblast-like cells to Ca-P coated surface obtained via Ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) method and Sol-Gel process on anodized surface by cellular proliferation and differentiation. Material and methods: The surface of a commercially pure titanium (Grade IV) discs with dimension of 10mm diameter and 2 mm thickness was modified by anodic oxidation under a constant voltage of 300 V. The experimental groups were coated with Ca-P by the IBAD method and Sol-Gel process on anodized surface. The surface roughness (Ra) of specimens was measured by optical interferometer and each surface was examined by SEM. To evaluate cell response, MG63 cells were cultured and cell proliferation, ALP activity and the ability of cell differentiation were examined. Also, cell morphology was examined by SEM. The significant of each group was verified by Kruskal-Wallis Test ($\alpha$=.05). Results: The Ra value of Ca-P coated surface by IBAD method was significantly higher than Ca-P coated surface by Sol-gel process (P < .05). The level of cell proliferation and ALP activity was higher in Ca-P coated surface by IBAD method (P<.05). The expression of ALP showed higher level expression in Ca-P coated surface by IBAD method. Cells grown on Ca-P coated surface by IBAD method were uniformly distributed and developed a very close layer. Conclusion: These experiments showed better performances of Ca-P coated surface by IBAD method with respect to Ca-P coated surface by Sol-gel process. Ca-P coated surface by IBAD method appear to give rise more mature osteoblast characteristics and might result in increased bone growth and bone-implant contact.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to study the effect of hydroxyapatite (HA) coating crystallinity on the proliferation and differentiation of human osteosarcoma cells. Materials and methods: Surface roughness of the titanium disks increased by anodizing treatment and then HA was coated using ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD). HA coating was crystallized by heat-treated at different temperature ($100^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$). According to the temperature, disks were divided into four groups (HA100, HA300, HA500, HA800). With the temperature, crystallinity of the HA coating was different. Anodized disks were used as control group. The physical properties of the disk surface were evaluated by surface roughness tests, XRD tests and SEM. The effect of the crystallinity of HA coating on HOS cells was studied in proliferation and differentiation. HOS cells were cultured on the disks and evaluated after 1, 3, 5, and 7 days. Growth and differentiation kinetics were subsequently investigated by evaluating cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity. Results: Regardless of the heat-treated temperature, there is no difference on the surface roughness. Crystallinity of the HA was appeared in the groups of HA500, HA800. HOS cells proliferation, ALP activity were higher in HA500 and HA800 group than HA100 and HA300. Conclusion: Within the results of this limited study, heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ of HA coating produced by IBAD has shown greater effect on proliferation and differentiation of HOS cells. It is considered that further in vivo study will be necessary.
