A numerical procedure (integral method) for calculating the interacting turbulent boundary layer is set up. With this method, some free interactions with various upstream conditions are simulated in order to investigate the influence of upstream state on the interacting turbulent boundary layer. The results obtained by this numerical simulation can be summarized as follows; Free interaction of upstream unstabilized (or separated) turbulent boundary layer is subcritical regardless of its external Mach number, while free interaction of upstream stabilized turbulent boundary layer has two different characteristics (subcritical, supercritical) according to the external Mach number.

Hydrodynamic characteristics of a stratified flow at a Y-junction were examined analytically. Gas is supplied through the main horizontal channel and liquid is introduced into the gas stream from the Y-shaped bottom branch. Analysis was performed with irrational flow and inviscid fluid assumptions. The Stokes' inverse transformation technique was adopted to convert the real x-y plane into the x-.psi. plane. The potential flow equation was solved numerically in the transformed (x-.psi.) plane and the interface profile, pressure distribution and the streamlines were obtained. The effects of the inlet conditions, injection angle and the gravity on the flow characteristics were also examined. To check the validity of the present method, the previous resultant the two-dimensional obtuse wedge flow was compared. The inverse transformation technique turned out to be also very useful to predict the hydrodynamic characteristics of a stratified flow with the pressure variation at a Y-shaped mixing junction.

Three dimensional structures of detonation wave propagating through a square-shaped duct were investigated using computational method and parallel processing. Inviscid fluid dynamics equations coupled with $variable-{\gamma}$ formulation and simplified one-step Arrhenius chemical reaction model were analysed by MUSCL-type TVD scheme and four stage Runge-Kutta time integration. The unsteady computational results in three dimension show the detailed mechanism of transverse mode and diagonal mode of detonation wave instabilities resulting same cell length but different cell width in smoked-foil record.
In the present study, a grid deformation technique has been incorporated into the unsteady compressible and incompressible viscous flow solvers on unstructured hybrid meshes. An algebraic method based on the basis decomposition of normal edge vector was used for the deformation of viscous elements, and a ball-vertex spring analogy was adopted for inviscid elements among several spring analogy methods due to its robustness. The present method was validated by comparing the results obtained from the grid deformation and the rigid motion of entire grids. Fish swimming motion of an NACA0012 airfoil and flapping wing motion of a generic fighter were simulated to demonstrate the robustness of the present grid deformation technique.
A two-dimensional unsteady inviscid flow solver has been developed for the simulation of complex geometric configurations on adaptive Cartesian meshes. Embedded condition was used for boundary condition and a predictor-corrector explicit time marching scheme was used for time-accurate numerical simulation. The Cartesian mesh generator, which was previously developed for steady problem, was used grid generation for unsteady flow. The solver was based on ALE formulation for body motion. For diminishing the effects of cut-cells, the cell merging method was used. Using cell merging method, it was eliminated the CFL constraints. The conservation problem, which is caused cell-type variation around region swept by solid boundary, was also solved using cell merging method. The results are presented for 2D circular cylinder and missile launching problem.
The numerical simulations with unstructured mesh by cell-centered and vertex-centered approaches were peformed for the quadrilateral and triangular meshes. For 2-D inviscid supersonic vortex flow, the simulation results and the analytic solution were compared and the accuracy was assessed. The calculation efficiency was measured by the parameter defined by the consumed CPU time multiplied by absolute error As a results, equilateral triangular mesh yielded the best accuracy and efficiency among the tested meshes. Cell-centered approach gives a little better efficiency than vertex - centered approach.
The effects of finite gap at the tip of turbomachinery blades have long been topics of both theoretical and experimental research because tip clearance degrades turbomachinery performance. This paper presents an analytical study of radial flow redistribution in a high speed compressor stage with axisymmetric tip clearance. The flow is assumed to be inviscid and compressible. The stage is modeled as an actuator disc and the analysis is carried out in the meridional plane. Upon going through the stage, the radially uniform upstream flow splits into the tip clearance and passage flows. The tip clearance flow is modeled as a jet driven by blade loading, or pressure difference between the pressure and suction sides. The model takes into consideration the detached shocks which occur in the rotor passage at the design point. This shock model is used to calculate the density ratio across the stage. Thus, the model is capable of predicting the kinematic effects of tip clearance in the high speed compressor flow field.
This paper presents the analysis of flows through three different types of radial compressor impeller by using quasi-three-dimensional analysis method. The method obtains two-dimensional solution for velocity distribution on meridional plane, and then calculates approximately the static pressure distributions on blade surfaces. Finite difference method is used for the solutions of governing equations. The compressors have low level compression-ratio and 12 straight radial blades with no backsweep. The results are compared with experimental data and the results of three-dimensional inviscid analysis with those by finite element method. It is found that the agreements with experimental data are good for the cases where viscous effects are not dominant.

A robust multi-fidelity optimization methodology has been developed, focusing on efficiently handling industrial runner design of hydraulic Francis turbines. The computational task is split between low- and high-fidelity phases in order to properly balance the CFD cost and required accuracy in different design stages. In the low-fidelity phase, a physics-based surrogate optimization loop manages a large number of iterative optimization evaluations. Two derivative-free optimization methods use an inviscid flow solver as a physics-based surrogate to obtain the main characteristics of a good design in a relatively fast iterative process. The case study of a runner design for a low-head Francis turbine indicates advantages of integrating two derivative-free optimization algorithms with different local- and global search capabilities.
Here we consider the evaluation of the the dynamic component of the second order force due to wave diffraction by a circular cylinder analytically and numerically. The cylinder is fixed, vertical, surface piercing in water of finite uniform depth. The formulation of the wave-structure interaction is based on the assumption of a homogeneous, ideal, incompressible, and inviscid fluid. The nonlinearity in the wave-structure interaction problem arises from the free surface boundary conditions, namely, dynamic and kinematic free surface boundary conditions. We expand the velocity potential and free surface elevation functions in terms of a small parameter and then consider the second order diffraction problem. After deriving the pressure using Bernoulli's equation, we obtain the analytical expression for the dynamic component of the second order force on the cylinder by integrating the pressure over the wetted surface. The computation of the dynamic force component requires only the first order velocity potential. Numerical results for the dynamic force component are presented.
