The piezoelectric thin film sensor has good characteristics to observe the impact responses of composite structures. The capabilities for monitoring impact behavior of Gr/Ep laminates subjected to damage-induced impact using the PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensor were examined. For a series of low-velocity impact tests from low energy to damage-induced energy, simulated sensor signals were compared with measured signals and the PVDF film sensor. Local impact damages(matrix cracking and delamination) were found at three impact tests, but the measured signals agreed well with the simulated sensor signals based on the linear relationship between the impact forces and the PVDF film sensor signals. And the inverse technique was applied to reconstruct the impact forces using the PVDF film sensor signals. Most of reconstructed impact forces had good agreement with the measured forces. The comparison results showed that the local damage due. to low-velocity impact didn't disturb the global impact responses of composite laminates and the reconstruction of impact forces from PVDF sensor signals wasn't affected by the local damage.
High-rise buildings are generally sensitive to strong winds. The evaluation of wind loads for the structural design, structural health monitoring (SHM), and vibration control of high-rise buildings is of primary importance. Nevertheless, it is difficult or even infeasible to measure the wind loads on an existing building directly. In this regard, a new inverse method for evaluating wind loads on high-rise buildings is developed in this study based on a discrete-time Kalman filter. The unknown structural responses are identified in conjunction with the wind loads on the basis of limited structural response measurements. The algorithm is applicable for estimating wind loads using different types of wind-induced response. The performance of the method is comprehensively investigated based on wind tunnel testing results of two high-rise buildings with typical external shapes. The stability of the proposed algorithm is evaluated. Furthermore, the effects of crucial factors such as cross-section shapes of building, the wind-induced response type, errors of structural modal parameters, covariance matrix of noise, noise levels in the response measurements and number of vibration modes on the identification accuracy are examined through a detailed parametric study. The research outputs of the proposed study will provide valuable information to enhance our understanding of the effects of wind on high-rise buildings and improve codes of practice.

This paper discusses the multifrontal direct solution method with out of core storage for large scale structural analysis in a limited computing resource. Large scale structural analysis requires huge amount of memory space and computation, so out of core solution method is needed in limited computing resource. In this research, out of core multifrontal solution algorithm which utilize the small size of physical memory and minimize the amount of access of low speed out of core storage is introduced. Three ideas, which are stack space in lower trianglar part of square factorization matrix, inverse stack data structure and selective data caching and recovery by data block size, are proposed.

Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) transmission is now considered as one of essential techniques enabling high rate data transmissions in wireless communication systems. In addition, severe channel impairments in wireless systems should be compensated by using highly efficient forward error correction (FEC) codes. Turbo codes or low density parity check (LDPC) codes, using iterative decoding with soft decision detection information (SDDI), are the most common examples. The excellent performance of these codes should be conditioned on accurate estimation of SDDI from the MIMO detection process. In this paper, we propose a soft MIMO detection scheme using QR decomposition of channel matrices as an efficient means to provide accurate SDDI to the iterative decoder. The proposed method employed a two sequential soft MIMO detection process in order to reduce computational complexity. Compared to the soft ZF method calculating the direct inverse of the channel matrix, the complexity of the proposed method can be further reduced as the number of antennas is increased, without any performance degradation.

Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli are important foodborne pathogenic bacteria, particularly in poultry meat. In this study, the presence of extracellular DNase activity was investigated for biofilm-deficient Campylobacter strains versus biofilm-forming Campylobacter strains isolated from chickens, to understand the relationship between extracellular DNase activity and biofilm formation. A biofilm-forming reference strain, C. jejuni NCTC11168, was co-incubated with biofilm non-forming strains isolated from raw chickens or their supernatants. The biofilm non-forming strains or supernatants significantly prohibited the biofilm formation of C. jejuni NCTC11168. In addition, the strains degraded pre-formed biofilms of C. jejuni NCTC11168. Degradation of C. jejuni NCTC11168 biofilm was confirmed after treatment with the supernatant of the biofilm non-forming strain 2-1 by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Quantitative analysis of the biofilm matrix revealed reduction of extracellular DNA (16%) and proteins (8.7%) after treatment. Whereas the biofilm-forming strains C. jejuni Y23-5 and C. coli 34-3 isolated from raw chickens and the C. jejuni NCTC11168 reference strain showed no extracellular DNase activity against their own genomic DNA, most biofilm non-forming strains tested, including C. jejuni 2-1, C. coli 34-1, and C. jejuni 63-1, exhibited obvious extracellular DNase activities against their own or 11168 genomic DNA, except for one biofilm non-former, C. jejuni 22-1. Our results suggest that extracellular DNase activity is a common feature suppressing biofilm formation among biofilm non-forming C. jejuni or C. coli strains of chicken origin.
Nanomaterial architecture with highly ordered, vertically oriented $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays shows a good promise for diverse technological applications. As inspired from the literature reports that Nickel modification can improve the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$, it was planned to coat Ni into the $TiO_2$ matrix. In this study, first $TiO_2$ nanotubes(TiNTs) were prepared by anodization (60V,3min) in HF-free aqueous electrolyte on ultrasonically cleaned polished titanium sheet substrates ($1{\times}7cm^2$). The typical thickness of the sintered TiNT ($500^{\circ}C$for10min) was ~1 micronas confirmed from the FESEM study. In the next part, as-anodized and sintered TiNT/Ti photoanodes were used to coat Ni by AC electrodeposition from aqueous 0.1M nickel sulphate solution. During AC electrodeposition, conditions such as 1V DC offset voltage, 9V amplitude (peak-to-peak) and 750 Hz frequency were fixed constant and the deposition time was varied as 0.5 min, 1 min, 2 min and 10 min. The photoelectrochemical performance of pristine and Ni modified TiNT/Ti photoanodes was measured in 1N NaOH electrolyte under 1 SUN illumination in the potential range of -1V and 1.2V versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The photocurrent performance of TiNT/Ti photoanode decreased upon Ni modification and the results were confirmed after repeated experiments. This suggests us that Ni modification inhibits the photoelectrochemical performance of $TiO_2$ nanotubes.
The performance of face recognition is greatly affected by the illumination effect because intra-person variation under different lighting conditions can be much bigger than the inter-person variation. In this paper, we propose an illumination robust face recognition by separating identity factor and illumination factor using the symmetric bilinear models. The translation procedure in the bilinear model requires a repetitive computation of matrix inverse operation to reach the identity and illumination factors. Sometimes, this computation may result in a nonconvergent case when the observation has an noisy information. To alleviate this situation, we suggest a ridge regressive bilinear model that combines the ridge regression into the bilinear model. This combination provides some advantages: it makes the bilinear model more stable by shrinking the range of identity and illumination factors appropriately, and it improves the recognition performance by reducing the insignificant factors effectively. Experiment results show that the ridge regressive bilinear model outperforms significantly other existing methods such as the eigenface, quotient image, and the bilinear model in terms of the recognition rate under a variety of illuminations.
In this paper, we propose a new affine projection sign algorithm (APSA) to improve the convergence speed of the conventional APSA which has been proposed to enable the affine projection algorithm (APA) to operate robustly in impulsive noise environment. The conventional APSA has two advantages; it operates robustly against impulsive noise and does not need calculation for the inverse matrix. The proposed algorithm also has the conventional algorithm's advantages and furthermore, better convergence speed than the conventional algorithm. In the conventional algorithm, each input signal is normalized by $l_2$-norm of all input signals, but the proposed algorithm uses input signals normalized by their corresponding $l_2$-norm. We carried out a performance comparison of the proposed algorithm with the conventional algorithm using a system identification model. It is shown that the proposed algorithm has the faster convergence speed than the conventional algorithm.
A solution method is presented to solve the eigenvalue problem arising in the dynamic analysis of nonclassicary damped structural systems with multiple eigenvalues. The proposed method is obtained by applying the modified Newton-Raphson technique and the orthonormal condition of the eigenvectors to the linear eigenproblem through matrix augmentation of the quadratic eigenvalue problem. In the iteration methods such as the inverse iteration method and the subspace iteration method, singularity may be occurred during the factorizing process when the shift value is close to an eigenvalue of the system. However, even though the shift value is an eigenvalue of the system, the proposed method provides nonsingularity, and that is analytically proved. Since the modified Newton-Raphson technique is adopted to the proposed method, initial values are need. Because the Lanczos method effectively produces better initial values than other methods, the results of the Lanczos method are taken as the initial values of the proposed method. Two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the results are compared with those of the well-known subspace iteration method and the Lanczos method.
This tutorial summarizes the coordinate transforms for formulating geophysical problems. To ensure mathematical consistency, this discussion begins with the right-hand rule. Further, the concepts of active and passive transforms are introduced. By extending these concepts, the coordinate transform and its inverse between two coordinates are related to the matrix transpose. The yaw-pitch-roll rotation and the azimuth-deviation-tool face rotation transforms are described as the most frequently used schemes, and the relation between the Rodrigues' rotation formula and these two transforms are mathematically explained. The "Gimbal Lock" problem inherent in yaw-pitch-roll rotation is schematically presented and mathematically derived. As a useful tool overcome this problem, the principle and usage of the quaternion is also described.
