The 3D-AVC standard aims at improving coding efficiency by applying new techniques for utilizing intra, inter and view predictions. 3D video scenes are rendered with existing texture video and additional depth map. The depth map comes at the expense of increased computational complexity of the encoding process. For real-time applications, reducing the complexity of 3D-AVC is very important. In this paper, we present a fast intra mode decision algorithm to reduce the complexity burden in the 3D video system. The proposed algorithm uses similarity between texture video and depth map. The best intra prediction mode of the depth map is similar to that of the corresponding texture video. The early decision algorithm can be made on the intra prediction of depth map coding by using the coded intra mode of texture video. Adaptive threshold for early termination is also proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm saves the encoding time on average 29.7% without any significant loss in terms of the bit rate or PSNR value.

In this paper, we propose a fast intra prediction mode selection method in Scalable Video Coding(SVC) which is an emerging video coding standard as an extension of H.264/Advanced Video Coding(H.264/AVC). The proposed method decides a candidate intra prediction mode based on the characteristic of macroblock smoothness. Statistical analysis is applied to computing that smoothness in spatial enhancement layer. We also propose an early termination scheme for Intra_BL mode decision where the RD cost value of Intra_BL is utilized. Compared with JSVM software, our scheme can reduce about 55% of the computation complexity of intra prediction on average, while the performance degradation is negligible; For low QP values, the average PSNR loss is very negligible, equivalently the bit rate increases by 0.01%. For high QP values, the average PSNR loss is less than 0.01dB, which equals to 0.25% increase in bitrate on average.
Intra prediction in HEVC is also significantly improved from H.264/AVC with the increased prediction modes up to 35 that results in increase of the complexity cost. Hence, a fast intra mode decision algorithm is required for real-time applications. A fast intra mode decision is proposed in this paper for further complexity reduction in addition to the RMD (Rough Mode Decision) that has been adopted into the HEVC reference software, referred to as HM, for fast intra prediction. The proposed method reduces the complexity of intra mode decision by limiting the number of search modes in both steps of RMD and the final mode decision. Experimental results show that the proposed method provide about 13.2% encoding time reduction with 1.0% BD-rate increase on average over test sequences in HM 12.0.
This paper proposes a new frame interpolation algorithm mainly designed for intra-mode blocks. In order to improve the accuracy of pixel interpolation, the new algorithm exploits two different interpolation modes for inter-mode blocks and intra-mode blocks, respectively. The use of the two modes reduces ghost artifacts but increases blocking artifacts between the blocks interpolated by different modes. To reduce blocking artifacts, this paper proposes an interpolation algorithm that attempts to isolate a fast moving object and interpolates such objects as the intra-mode while the remaining blocks are interpolated as the inter-mode. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves subjective and objective quality of pictures by reducing ghost artifacts.
This letter presents an adaptive coefficient scanning method for intra mode coding in H.264. The proposed adaptive scanning uses six alternative scanning orders based on the intra prediction mode. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the coding efficiency up to 3% compared to conventional scanning methods without additional computations.
In this parer, we propose an efficient intra prediction mode decision scheme in Scalable Video Coding(SVC) which is an emerging video coding standard as an extension of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC(Advanced Video Coding). The proposed method in base on the characteristic of macroblock smoothness follows the statistical analysis of intra prediction mode in an enhancement layer and it decides a candidate intra prediction mode. We also propose an early termination scheme for Intra_BL mode decision where the RD cost value of Intra_BL is utilized. Simulation results show that the proposed method reduces 54.67% of the computation complexity of intra prediction coding, while the degradation in video quality is negligible; for low QP values, the average PSNR loss is very negligible, equivalently the bit rate increases by 0.011%. For high QP values, the average PSNR loss is less than 0.01dB, which equals to 0.249% increase in bitrate.
We propose a fast macroblock mode prediction and decision algorithm based on contextual information for Pslices in the H.264/AVC video standard, in which the mode prediction part is composed of intra and inter modes. There are nine $4{\times}4$ and four $16{\times}16$ modes in the intra mode prediction, and seven block types exist for the best coding gain based on rate-distortion optimization. This scheme gives rise to exhaustive computations (search) in the coding procedure. To overcome this problem, a fast inter mode prediction scheme is applied that uses contextual mode information for P-slices. We verify the performance of the proposed scheme through a comparative analysis of experimental results. The suggested mode search procedure increased more than 57% in speed compared to a full mode search and more than 20% compared to the other methods.

In the H.264/ AVC video coding standard, the intra-prediction coding with various block sizes offers a considerably high improvement in coding efficiency compared to previous standards. In order to achieve this, H.264/AVC uses the Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique to select the best intraprediction mode for a macroblock, and it brings about the drastic increase of the computation complexity of H.264 encoder. To reduce the computation complexity and stabilize the coding performance on visual quality, this paper proposed a fast intra-prediction mode decision algorithm using non-parametric thresholds and simplified directional masks. The use of nonparametric thresholds makes the intra-coding performance not be dependent on types of video sequences and simplified directional masks reduces the compuation loads needed by the calculation of local edge information. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce more than 55% of the whole encoding time with a negligible loss in PSNR and bitrates and provides the stable performance regardless types of video sequences.
In this paper, we propose a novel method which efficiently codes $4{\times}4$ intra prediction modes in H.264/ AVC video encoding. There are nine optional prediction modes for each $4{\times}4$luma block and 4 modes for each $16{\times}16$luma block. To code each $4{\times}4$ intra prediction mode, lots of bits are required. To efficiently compress the intra mode bits in H.264/AVC, the most probable mode(MPM) is estimated by using the intra modes of the adjacent blocks, since intra modes for neighboring $4{\times}4$luma blocks are correlated. In this paper, a novel method for estimating the MPM is proposed by using the statistical distribution of intra modes of adjacent intra blocks. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a coding gain of about 0.1dB.

JVET (Joint Video Exploration Team) which explored evolving technologies of video coding with capabilities beyond HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), released a references software codec named the Joint Exploration Model (JEM) for performance verification of coding technologies. JEM has 67 intra prediction modes that extend the 35 modes of HEVC for intra prediction. Therefore, the enhancement of the coding performance is limited due to the overhead of prediction mode coding. In this paper, we analyze the probabilities of prediction modes selections, and then we propose a more efficient intra prediction mode coding based on the results of analyzed mode occurrence. In addition, we propose a context modeling for CABAC (Context-Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding) of the proposed mode coding. Experimental results show that the BD-rate gain is 0.02% on the AI (All Intra) coding structure compared to JEM 7.0. We need to optimize context modeling for additional coding performance enhancement.
