This paper describes and analyzes IBC (intra block copy) in HEVC (high efficiency video coding) SCC (screen content coding) to improve the coding efficiency of IBC. HEVC SCC reference software SCM 2 is employed to analyze the selection ratio of IBC which is newly adopted in HEVC SCC, and the tools for IBC such as the block vector prediction and block vector coding method are evaluated. Experimental results show the average IBC selection ratio is 31.08% and 0.33% in I-Slice and B-Slice, respectively. Based on this results, the coding efficiency of IBC could be improved by utilizing IBC selectively. In addition, analysis tests of block vector prediction and the block vector coding method show the current methods are not efficient to screen content videos, and the analysis results are presented to improve these methods.

The H.264/ AVC video coding standard supports the intra prediction with various block sizes for luma component and a 8x8 block size for chroma components. This new feature of H.264/AVC offers a considerably higher improvement in coding efficiency compared to previous compression standards. In order to achieve this, H.264/AVC uses the Rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique to select the best intra prediction mode for each block size, and it brings about the drastic increase of the computation complexity of H.264 encoder. In this paper, a fast block size decision algorithm is proposed to reduce the computation complexity of the intra prediction in H.264/AVC. The proposed algorithm computes the smoothness based on AC and DC coefficient energy for macroblocks and compares with the nonparametric criteria which is determined by considering information on neighbor blocks already reconstructed, so that deciding the best probable block size for the intra prediction. Also, the use of non-parametric criteria makes the performance of intra-coding not be dependent on types of video sequences. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is able to reduce up to 30% of the whole encoding time with a negligible loss in PSNR and bitrates and provides the stable performance regardless types of video sequences.

In this letter, a new intra-block coding mode is presented to improve the coding efficiency for band-limited signals. A band-limited block is sub-sampled, and the sub-sampled signal is coded on the basis of the conventional prediction/transform coding. The rest of the samples are reconstructed by interpolation at the decoder side without any side information. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves coding gains of 2.7% for common intermediate format (CIF), 4.29% for quarter CIF, and 6.39% for 720p60 sequences against the H.264/AVC JM10.2 reference software.
Recently, with the development of deep learning and artificial neural network technologies, research on the application of neural network has been actively conducted in the field of video coding. In particular, deep learning-based intra prediction is being studied as a way to overcome the performance limitations of the existing intra prediction techniques. This paper presents a method of context-adaptive neural network-based intra prediction model training and its coding performance analysis. In other words, in this paper, we implement and train a known intra prediction model based on convolutional neural network (CNN) that predicts a current block using contextual information from reference blocks. Then, we integrate the trained model into HM16.19 as an additional intra prediction mode and evaluate the coding performance of the trained model. Experimental results show that the trained model gives 0.28% BD-rate bit saving over HEVC in All Intra (AI) coding mode. In addition, the coding performance change of training considering block partition is also presented.

In H.264/Ave, an intra prediction added to the P-frame coding slightly improves both of image quality and bit rate, but greatly increases an amount of computation. In order to reduce the increase in computation, this paper proposes an image contents based intra prediction coding using characteristics that the best intra block mode depends on the image content of a macro block. The proposed algorithm estimates the image content with image complexity and the best inter block mode, and then selects or excludes a intra block mode on the basis of it. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm reduces average O.OldB in image quality, and increases average 0.38% in the bit rate, but reduces average 37.02% in computation time compared with the conventional algorithm.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) adopts intra transform skip mode, in which a residual block is directly quantized in the pixel domain without transforming the block into the frequency domain. Intra transform skip mode provides a significant coding gain for screen content. However, when intra-prediction errors are not transformed, the errors are often correlated along the intra-prediction direction. This paper introduces a residual differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) method for the intra-predicted and transform-skipped blocks to remove redundancy. The proposed method performs pixel-by-pixel residual prediction along the intra-prediction direction to reduce the dynamic range of intra-prediction errors. Experimental results show that the transform skip mode's Bjøntegaard delta rate (BD-rate) is improved by 12.8% for vertically intra-predicted blocks. Overall, the proposed method shows an average 1.2% reduction in BD-rate, relative to HEVC, with negligible computational complexity.
Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC) of ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T developed the HEVC Screen Content Coding (HEVC SCC) standard as the HEVC extension for the screen content video coding. The Intra Block Copy (IBC) is the most effective tool adopted in HEVC SCC and predicts current block from already reconstructed neighboring blocks in the same picture. To reduce the amount of data in BV (Block Vector) to be transmitted, a BV predictor (BVP) is used to generate the BV differences in the IBC BV coding. In this paper, we analyze the current BV prediction process using HEVC reference software SCM-2.0 and SCM-4.0. Based on the analysis results, we propose an improved BVP candidate selection algorithm by adding a search process for adjacent BVs in addition to the existing spatial BVP candidates. Experimental results show that the BD-rate reduction of our proposed improvements ranges from 0.2% to 1%.

This paper proposes an early termination method of a block vector search for fast encoding of high efficiency video coding (HEVC) screen content coding (SCC). In the proposed algorithm, two blocks indicated by two block vector predictors (BVPs) were first employed as an intra block copy (IBC) search. If the sum of absolute difference (SAD) value of the block is less than a threshold defined empirically, an IBC BV search is terminated early. The initial threshold for early termination is derived by statistical analysis and it can be modified adaptively based on a quantization parameter (QP). The proposed algorithm is evaluated on SCM-2.0 under all intra (AI) coding configurations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm reduces IBC BV search time by 29.23% on average while the average BD-rate loss is 0.41% under the HEVC SCC common test conditions (CTC).
The intra prediction technique is the one of the key factors to the success of H.264. There are nine optional prediction modes for each $4{\times}4$ luma block and 4 modes for each $16{\times}16$ luma block. To reduce the intra mode bits efficiently, the most probable mode (MPM) is estimated by using the intra modes of the adjacent blocks, since intra modes for neighboring $4{\times}4$ luma blocks are correlated. In this paper, a new method for estimating the MPM is proposed by using the statistical distribution of intra modes of adjacent intra blocks. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a coding gain of about 0.1dB.

The H.264/AVC standard has adopted new coding tools such as intra-prediction, variable block size, motion estimation with quarter-pixel-accuracy, loop filter, and so on. The adoption of these tools enables an H.264/AVC-coded bitstream to have more information than was possible with previous standards. In this paper, we propose an effective spatial error concealment method with low complexity in H.264/AVC intra-frame. From information included in an H.264/AVC-coded bitstream, we use prediction modes of intra-blocks to recover a damaged block. This is because the prediction direction in each prediction mode is highly correlated to the edge direction. We first estimate the edge direction of a damaged block using the prediction modes of the intra-blocks adjacent to a damaged block and classify the area inside the damaged block into edge and flat areas. Our method then recovers pixel values in the edge area using edge-directed interpolation, and recovers pixel values in the flat area using weighted interpolation. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields better video quality than conventional approaches.
