Relationships between Preschool-aged Grandchildren's Temperament and Parenting Stress of Grandparents: Focused on the Moderating Effect of Intimacy between Grandparents and Grandchildren (유아의 기질과 조부모 양육스트레스 간의 관계: 조부모와 손자녀 친밀감의 중재효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the moderating effect of intimacy between grandparents and grandchildren on the relationship between preschool-aged grandchildren's temperament and parenting stress of grandparent. 172 grandparents living in Busan and Gyeongnam area were selected for the subjects of this study. Collected data were analyzed by the SPSS 18.0 program. The main results were as follows: First, this study proved the impact of grandchildren's temperament in preschool-aged on parenting stress of grandparents. Second, intimacy between grandparents and grandchildren moderated on the relationships between preschool-aged grandchildren's temperament and parenting stress of grandparents. This study provides the information about developing the education program which can relieve grandparents' stress associated with preschool-aged grandchildren's temperament.

  • Mother's view and mediating behavior of paternal grandparents-grandchildren is explored by using data of 159 mothers who have children at teens. The analysis indicates as below. 1. Mothers highly except the roles of grandparents such as teaching values and family historians, role models for good life, influencing on the developing of self-identity of grandchildren. However mothers want grandparents keep distance from the lives of grandchildren. This may be double message to grandparents that they may find it uneasy to accomodate. 2. Grandchildren's role is expected very positively by mothers. 3. Mothers' mediating level of paternal grandparents-grandchildren relations is neutral and a little bit positive on the whole. Mothers' mediating behavior between grandfathers-grandchildren is associated with mothers' view on the importance of grandfathers in the lives of grandchildren and residence pattern. Mothers' mediating behavior between grandmothers-grandchildren is associated with mothers' view on the importance of grandmothers in the lives of grandchildren, grandchildren's role, the intimacy between mothers and grandmothers and residence pattern.

The Affective Solidarity Between Grandparents and Their Grandchildren in Emerging Adulthood, Focused on Lineage and Grandchildren's Sex (청년기 손자녀-친/외조부모간 유대와 접촉, 가치유사성 및 부모-조부모 관계 질과의 관계)

  • This study investigates the predictors of the relationship quality between grandparents and grandchildren in emerging adulthood. Participants were 501 grandchildren with at least one living maternal/paternal grandparents. According to the t-test, the frequency of contact with maternal grandparents, the similarity of value to paternal grandparents, and the affective solidarity with paternal grandparents were significantly different depending on the grandchildren's sex. Results of multiple regression analyses indicated that the relationships of father-grandparents and mother-grandparents, the frequency of contact, and the similarities of value significantly predicted the affective solidarity between grandparents and grandchildren. However, the relative predictive power of these variables was different by the lineage and the grandchildren's sex.

A Study on the Relationship between Perceived Grandparent's Social Support and Children's Social Competence (아동이 지각한 조부모의 사회적 지지와 아동의 사회적 능력과의 관계)

  • In general, grandparents have been very influential resource persons on their grandchildren's gross development. Nevertheless it has been difficult to find many empirical studies that focused on the specific competence of grandchildren and showed strong evidence in its regard. Therefore this study was intented to investigate the influence of grandparents' social support on their grandchildren's social competence in the light of grandparent's social support on their grandchildren's social competence in the light of grandchildren-grandparent relationship. The subjects were 230 fifth grade children in elementary school who were 123 boys and 107 girls. Among them, 94 children were related with grandfathers, 167 children with grandmothers 101 children with maternal grandfathers and 182 children with maternal grandmothers. The questionaire was used as a methodological instrument and the statistics such as frequency, percentile, mean, Pearson's correlation, One-Way ANOVA and Scheff test were used for data analysis. The findings were as follows : 1) Children's affectional intimacy to grandparent was positively correlated with perceived grandparent's social support. 2) Perceived grandparent's social support was affirmatively correlated with grandparent-mother relationship, that is, grandchildren-grandparent relationship was mediated by mother. And 3) children who more perceived grandparent's social support than less perceived grandparent's social support were highly rated I social competence by teacher. In the result, children emotionally, informatively and instrumentally supported by paternal or maternal grandparents showed high social competence defined supported by paternal or maternal grandparents showed high social competence defined as interpersonal relationship ability on the significant level respectively.
