  • In this paper I investigate the intervening consonants constraint in umlaut in Korean. It is generally known that if a palatalized consonant, i.e. s/ㅅ/ or $t{\int}/ㅈ/$ etc, intervenes in an umlaut environment, the expected umlaut process is blocked. But there are not a few words which are thought to have undergone umlaut diachronically: wensu $( If we assume that these words were formed as a result of umlaut, we must explain the reason of the violation of the intervening consonants constraint. On the other hand if we assume that these words were formed as a result of other phonological processes, we must explain these words by ad hoc rules respectively. In this paper I argue that these words including others have undergone the umlaut process by offering some historical and dialectal evidence.

  • Association rule mining searches for interesting relationships among items in a given database. There are three primary quality measures for association rule, support and confidence and lift. In order to improve the efficiency of existing mining algorithms, constraints were applied during the mining process to generate only those association rules that are interesting to users instead of all the association rules. When we create relation rule, we can often find a lot of rules. This can find rule that direct relativity by intervening variable does not exist. In this study we try to discovery an insignificant rule in association rules by intervening variable. Result of this study can understand relativity about rule that is created in relation rule more exactly.

  • Background : Willingness to satisfy patients(WSP) among nurses is essential to promoting patient satisfaction which is a critical component in the quality of health care and its outcomes. This study was carried out to empirically find out the affecting factors of WSP among nurses in hospital settings. Methods : The model contains seven job relating determinants and two intervening variables as follows: i) job relating variables of professional status, task requirements, pay, physician-nurse interaction, nurse-nurse interaction, organizational policies, and autonomy, ii) intervening variables of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Data were collected from 205 nurses in two general hospitals owned by one foundation located in Pusan, Korea, using a structured and self-administered questionnaire. Results : The major results were as follows: First, the results of ANOVA on WPS by personal characteristics showed a statistically significant relationships between WPS and hierarchical orders(p<.01) ana tenure(p<.10). Comparing with the lower orders and shorter tenure, the higher orders and the longer tenure showed better WPS. Second, the results of simple correlation analysis between WPS and determinants and intervening variables showed the following variables, in order of importance, were statistically significant(p<.01): work satisfaction(+), organizational commitment(+), task requirements(+), nurse-interaction(+), professional status(+), physician-nurse interaction(+). Third, the results of path analysis showed that two intervening variables of job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and three determinants of task requirements, professional status, and nurse-nurse interaction had a positively significant direct effect to WPS. Conclusion : The results suggest that nurses who are more satisfied with task requirements, status, nurse-nurse interaction, overall job satisfaction, and organizational commitment, will behave in ways that patients find more satisfied.

  • Data mining searches for interesting relationships among items in a given database. The methods of data mining are decision tree, association rules, clustering, neural network and so on. The decision tree approach is most useful in classification problems and to divide the search space into rectangular regions. Decision tree algorithms are used extensively for data mining in many domains such as retail target marketing, customer classification, etc. When create decision tree model, complicated model by standard of model creation and number of input variable is produced. Specially, there is difficulty in model creation and analysis in case of there are a lot of numbers of input variable. In this study, we study on decision tree using intervening variable. We apply to actuality data to suggest method that remove unnecessary input variable for created model and search the efficiency.

  • To observe the intervening effect of resveratrol on coxsackie virus B3m-induced myocarditis in Balb/c mice and explore the mechanism of intervening effect. Using an animal model of viral myocarditis induced by coxsackie virus B3m (CVB3m), with Ribavirin and Astragalan as comparison, to examine the changes of general condition, mortality, the weights of heart, liver and spleen, serum MDA and NO levels, and cardiac histology in Balb/c mice. By comparison with Ribavirin and Astragalan, it was found that in the mice model of viral myocarditis induced by coxsackie virus B3m resveratrol significantly improved the changes of general condition, mortality, the weights of heart, liver and spleen, serum MDA and NO levels, and cardiac histology. It suggested that resveratrol may have some chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic effects in the treatment of viral myocarditis.

  • Runoff simulation tests to investigate the flow mechanics of nonsuomerged overland flow in a natural grass intervening land system were condueted and a modified kinematic wave overland runoff model developed by Choi et al. (1993) was verified. Nonhomogeneity and heterogeneity of the soil, slope, local topography, infiltration, grass density, and the density and activity of the soil microhes and wild animals were the major factors affecting the flow. Streamlines were disturbed by grass stems and small concentrated flows due to the disturbed streamlines and local topography were observed a lot. Relatively larger concentrated flows were observed where bundles of grass were dominant than where individual grasses were growing. Predicted hydrographs were agreed verv well with measured hydrographs. Since the modified model considers grass density in computing flow depth and hydraulic radius, it can be better than existing kinematic wave model if it were used to route nonpoint source pollutant attenuation processes in many grass intervening land systems.

  • This article introduces technique to reduce harmonic by using the $5^{th}$ and $7^{th}$ harmonic tune filter and line reactor in the comparison to the technique of intervening firing method at the pulse of the 6-pulse phase-controlled converter in every 1/6 period. The design of the technique introduced in this article is to reduce the harmonic distortion of the current and the voltage resulted from three-phase thyristor phase-controlled converter. The waveform obtained from the experiment was analyzed on the spectrum of the current, voltage and the total harmonic distortion. The double firing method causes zero vectors of output voltage and input current. Designing the mechanism of the converter based on the idea of Park Vector Theory, the number of harmonic distortion in the intervening firing method were compared to those in normal firing method.

  • The purpose of this study was to investgate consumer problems which were severe for consumers and their complaining behavior. This research had a purpose to enhance the ability of consumer protection by the well-developed consumer education. The subjects were 342 homewives in Seoul, Feb. 1995. The major results were as follows : Younger, higher-educated, small sized family and white-collor and professional occupation homewives experienced more consumer problems. Also theses homewives with higher level of consumer attitude, information search and more consumer problems had more complaining behavior. For the causal relation of consumer problems experience, several independent variables and consumer complaining behavior, the path analysis was used. Only the consumer problem experience which was a intervening variable had direct affect to the consumer complaining behavior. Education level, number of family, consumer knowledge had inderect affect through the intervening variable to the consumer complaining behavior.

  • This study targets on overall understanding about practitioners' experience at the community addiction management centers on intervening alcoholic-batterers. This research is a qualitative case study based on data that are collected from fifteen practitioners' interview experiences of both focus group and individual and data from supervising, advising, and workshop attending. As a result, the research shows that 'Overwhelmed to deal with alcoholic-batterers', 'Strengthening ability through pre-performances', 'Making an effort continuously to solve problems' and 'Unwillingness changes by intervening alcoholic-batterers' on upper categories of practitioners' experiences. Under alternative solutions and practical categories, it shows that 'Gaps between the needs and the reality' and 'Concrete needs to achieve competence'. To provide effective strategies, the study suggests practical and political implications that are reflected specific environments of the community addiction management centers.

  • A new computerized testing system, called the Computerized Multiple-choice Testing (CMMT) system, was introduced. In this system, questions of multiple choice (MC) items are presented first without options, so that students must generate answers for themselves. They can click for the options when they are ready, and can respond within a brief, specified time period. The present study was performed to examine whether this system is effective in reducing backward reasoning, I. e., using the options of MC items as cues to find the correct answer. One hundred and seventy-seven 6th grade students (12 year olds) were divided into two groups so that mean scores from a prior test were equal: The experimental group took an intervening computerized test in the new format, and the control group in the MC format. Five days after the computerized intervening test, a short answer paper-and-pencil final test was given. Testing effect was greater in the new system than in the MC system. Analysis of the final test response in relation to the intervening test response showed that i) the students retained the correct answer in the new system more than in the MC testing system, and that ii) students corrected their previous failures in the intervening CMMT format more than those in the MC format. These results suggest that the new system is effective in reducing backward reasoning.
