Objectives : The consumption of licorice is large in Korea, but domestic production is insufficient due to the lack of adaptability. This study aimed to provide a morphological basis for adding interspecific hybrid licorice with improved adaptability to pharmacopoeia. Methods : This study was to establish identification criteria for the original plants, external and internal morphology of the authentic herbal medicines (Glycyrrhiza uralensis, G. glabra and G. inflata), market products and artificially interspecific hybrid forms of licorice. For this purpose, previous studies were investigated and visual and histological observations were carried out. We focused on the internal morphology by microscopic observation for securing objectivity. Finally, we proposed the identification keys for precise classification of each part. Results : 1) Original plant : Licorice species in the compendium were distinguished by the number of leaflets, presence of hair on the fruit, curvature and swelling of the fruit. 2) External morphology : Licorice species were distinguished by degree of powderiness, tearing gap, radial structure in the cross section and existence of protrusion of outer epidermis. 3) Internal morphology : Licorice species were distinguished by the degree of development of phloem fiber bundle, development of obliterated sieve, whether the secondary medullary ray are branched. In the case of interspecific hybrids, the characteristics of both species used for hybridization were mixed in all observation methods. Conclusions : These results suggest that the interspecific crossbred licorice is suitable for the pharmacopoeial standard. Therefore, it can be applied as a herbal medicine through additional supplementary study.

In abalones, interspecific hybridization has been suggested as a possible means to increase production and desired traits for the industry. In Korea, Haliotis gigantea is considered a species with a larger size and higher temperature tolerance than H. discus hannai. However, H. discus hannai is considered the most valuable and popular fishery resource due to its better acceptance and higher market prices. Thus, viable interspecific hybrids have been produced by artificial inseminating H. gigantea eggs with H. discus hannai sperm. However, the reciprocal hybrid cross was not successful. In this study, the hybridity and the growth and thermal tolerance performance of the interspecific hybrids were examined. A combination of various assays revealed maximum growth occurrence at 21℃ and the higher growth rate in the hybrids than that of H. discus hannai parent. In addition, the growth and survival at high-temperature (28℃) of the hybrids was equivalent to that of the highly tolerant H. gigantea parent, suggesting new possibilities to overcome the mass mortality in H. discus hannai during high temperature periods of summer season in Korea. Furthermore, the induced interspecific hybrid status was confirmed by the presence of species-specific bands for each parental species of the random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) profiles using universal rice primer (URP), which could be used as speciesspecific markers to distinguish the hybrids and their parental species.
This study was conducted to obtain the information of varietal development using wild soybean through investigation of variation and heredity of major agronomic characters in $F_2$ generation of interspecific cross between Glycine max and G. soja. In segregating populations of two crosses, all characters observed except 100-seed weight showed transgressive segregation. Days to flowering showed normal distribution; mean days to flowering in $F_1$, and $F_2$ was approximately mean of parent. Mean of $F_1$ for 100-seed weight was 6.2g and 5.7g for Eunhakong/KLG10084 and Sohaegnamulkong/KLG10084, respectively, which were somewhat skewed distribution to small seeded parents. Mean seed yield of $F_2$ was about mean of two parents. Degree of vine was 6.4 and 5.7 in $F_1$ for two crosses but it was 6.0 in $F_2$ for Eonbakong/KLG10084, which revealed the degree of vine as partial dominance while 4.6 for Sobaegnamulkong/KLG10084, somewhat different results from the previous cross. Broad-sense heritability($h^2B$) for plant height, days to flowering, pods per plant, seed yield, and degree of vine was comparatively high and narrow-sense heritability($h^2B$) for 100-seed weight which is the moot important character in the development of small seed-size sprout soybean was 52.3% and 65.6% for Eunhakong/KLG10084 and Sohaegnamulkong/KLG10084, respectively, which indicated that selection for the character in early generation was possible.
This study was conducted to identify the taxonomic differences in the characteristics of Rhodeus ocellatus and Acheilognathus yamatsutae during their early life history via an interspecific hybridization experiment. Results showed that the hatching rates of the cross-bred eggs were 60% for cross OY (R. ocellatus ♀×A. yamatsutae ♂) and 70% for cross YO (A. yamatsutae ♀×R. ocellatus ♂). The dorsal fin rays of YO were similar to those of R. ocellatus. The hybridization test of A. yamatsutae and R. ocellatus living in the same water stream revealed that no interspecies reproductive isolation occurred. OY and YO showed similar maternal and paternal characteristic. The juvenile of OY did not resemble both paternal and maternal fin rays, indicating a difference. The hatching larvae of the hybrids showed the morphological characteristics of their parents but varied in terms of the shapes of their parts.
"Hwaweon 2" was developed from an interspecific cross between Hwaseongbyeo and a wild species, Oryza rufipogon L. (IRGC 105491) based on marker-aided selection. The recurrent parent "Hwaseongbyeo" is a high grain quality cultivar with medium-maturity. Hwaweon 2 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. rufipogon introgression on chromosome 9. This segment was associated with genes controlling a number of traits including grain weight, heading date, culm length, and spikelets per panicle. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2007 and 2008. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as "Hwaweon 2". This cultivar averaged 98cm in culm length and has a medium to late growth duration. This variety is resistant to stripe virus as the recurrent parent. Milled rice of "Hwaweon 2" is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The yield potential of "Hwaweon 2" in grain is about 7.68 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level about 14% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo due to increase in grain weight and spikelets per panicle.
"Hwaweon 1" was developed from an interspecific cross between Hwaseongbyeo and a wild species, Oryza rufipogon L. (IRGC 105491) based on marker-aided selection. The recurrent parent "Hwaseongbyeo" is a high grain quality cultivar with medium-maturity. Hwaweon 1 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. rufipogon introgression on chromosome 8 harboring the gene for grain weight. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2007 and 2008. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as "Hwaweon 1". This cultivar averaged 89 cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. This cultivar is resistant to stripe virus as the recurrent parent, Hwaseongbyeo. Milled rice of "Hwaweon 1" is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The yield potential of "Hwaweon 1" in grain is about 7.43 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level about 10% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo mainly due to increase in grain weight.
Four species belonging to the Drosophila melanogaster complex were examined genetically and morphologically to analyze interspecific relationships. Insemination rates ranged from 96% to 99% within species crosses, but interspecific crosses among the four species exhibited a great variations in the frequency of successful matings. D. melanogaster females mated relatively well with males of other species and D. sechellia males were more successful in mating with females of other species. In the crosses among D. simulans, D. mauritiana and D. sechellia, hybrid flies were fertile in females, but sterile in males regardless of reciprocal matings. The phenogenetically relationship between this complex and their hybrids were investigated by the comparison of sex comb tooth number and genital arch of male. They were controlled by polygenic factors on the chromosome of both parents. The effects of temperature on viability of hybrids between D. melanogaster females and D. simulans males were investigated for detection of genes concerning the speciation. The temperature sensitivity of the hybrid was mainly controlled by genes located on the X chromosome of D. simulans males.
This study was conducted to find optimum pollination methods for overcoming pre-fertilization incompatibility in interspecific crosses between L. longiflorum 'Gelria' (LG) and L. cernuum (LC). In cross combination of $LC{\times}LG$, the survival rate of the ovaries was higher in the cut style pollinations than in normal stigmatic pollination. Among the various cut style pollination methods, pollination after cutting the styles 2 3mm length above the ovary and top of the ovary were the most effective ones. No ovaries and ovules survived in cross pollination of $LC{\times}LG$. In self-pollination of LG and cross pollination of $LC{\times}LG$, pollens germinated on the stigma by 12 hours and reached to the ovules by 90 hours after pollination. However, in the cross pollination of $LC{\times}LG$, pollen tubes elongated very slowly until 48 hours after pollination and a lot of deformed tubes were observed in the styler canal having swelled tube tip and irregular heavy callose deposition. The pollination time after anthesis also affected on the survival rate of ovaries and ovules showing the best result when pollinated on three days after anthesis. Stigma exudate promoted slightly the enlargement of ovaries, but the survival rate of ovaries and ovules was not increased.
'Hwaweon 6' was developed from a cross between 'Hwaseongbyeo' and a wild species, Oryza minuta L. (Acc. No. 101154) based on marker-assisted selection and backcrossing. The recurrent parent 'Hwaseongbyeo' is a high grain quality cultivar with medium maturity. Hwaweon 6 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. minuta introgressed segment on chromosome 7 harboring genes related with spikelets per panicle. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University and Chungcheongnamdo Agricultural Research & Extension (CARES), Yesan in 2009 and 2010. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2011 and 2012. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as Hwaweon 6. This cultivar averaged 80cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. Milled rice of Hwaweon 6 is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The average yield potential of Hwaweon 6 in grain was about 6.57 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level for two years about 3.0% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo due to an introgression of the quantitative trait locus (QTL) for spikelets per panicle (qSPP7) from O. minuta. This variety is comparable to Hwaseongbyeo in low temperature germinability and cold tolerance. The qSPP7 QTL would be useful in enhancing yield potential in rice breeding program.
