Safety Impacts of Red Light Enforcement on Signalized Intersections (교차로 신호위반 단속카메라 설치가 차량사고에 미치는 영향)

  • The frequency and severity of traffic accidents related to signalized intersections in urban areas have been more serious than those in both arterial segments and crosswalks. Especially, traffic accidents involved with injuries and fatalities have caused by traffic signal violations within intersections. Therefore, many countries including Korea have installed the red light enforcement camera (RLE) to reduce traffic accidents associated with the traffic signal violation. Meanwhile, many methodologies have been studied in terms of safety impacts estimation of red light enforcement, which, however, cannot be easy to conduct. In this study, safety impacts was estimated for intersections of Chicago downtown area using SPF models and EB approach. As a result, for all crash types and target traffic accident types such as "angle", "rear end", "sideswipe in the same and other directions", "turn", and "head on", fatal crashes were reduced by 26% and 38%. However, RLE may increase property-demage-only-crashes by 3.23% and 1.16%, respectively.

A Causation Study for car crashes at Rural 4-legged Signalized Intersections Using Nonlinear Regression and Structural Equation Methods (비선형 회귀분석과 구조방정식을 이용한 지방부 4지 신호교차로의 사고요인분석)

  • Traffic accidents at signalized intersections have been increased annually so that it is required to examine the causation to reduce the accidents. However, the current existing accident models were developed mainly by using non-linear regression models such as Poisson methods. These non-linear regression methods lack to reveal the complicated causation for traffic accidents, though they are the right choice to study randomness and non-linearity of accidents. Therefore, it is required to utilize another statistical method to make up for the lack of the non-linear regression methods. This study developed accident prediction models for 4 legged signalized intersections with Poisson methods and compared them with structural equation models. This study used structural equation methods to reveal the complicated causation of traffic accidents, because the structural equation method has merits to explain more causational factors for accidents than others.

Predicting Carbon Dioxide Emissions of Incoming Traffic Flow at Signalized Intersections by Using Image Detector Data (영상검지자료를 활용한 신호교차로 접근차량의 탄소배출량 추정)

  • Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the transportation sector in South Korea accounts for 16.5% of all CO2 emissions, and road transportation accounts for 96.5% of this sector's emissions in South Korea. Hence, constant research is being carried out on methods to reduce CO2 emissions from this sector. With the emerging use of smart crossings, attempts to monitor individual vehicles are increasing. Moreover, the potential commercial deployment of autonomous vehicles increases the possibility of obtaining individual vehicle data. As such, CO2 emission research was conducted at five signalized intersections in the Gangnam District, Seoul, using data such as vehicle type, speed, acceleration, etc., obtained from image detectors located at each intersection. The collected data were then applied to the MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES)-Matrix model-which was developed to obtain second-by-second vehicle activity data and analyze daily CO2 emissions from the studied intersections. After analyzing two large and three small intersections, the results indicated that 3.1 metric tons of CO2 were emitted per day at each intersection. This study reveals a new possibility of analyzing CO2 emissions using actual individual vehicle data using an improved analysis model. This study also emphasizes the importance of more accurate CO2 emission analyses.

Derivation of Driving Stability Indicators for Autonomous Vehicles Based on Analyzing Waymo Open Dataset (Waymo Open Dataset 기반 자율차의 주행행태분석을 통한 주행안정성 평가지표 도출)

  • As autonomous vehicles are allowed to drive on public roads, there is an increasing amount of on-road data available for research. It has therefore become possible to analyze impacts of autonomous vehicles on traffic safety using real-world data. It is necessary to use indicators that are well-representative of the driving behavior of autonomous vehicles to understand the implications of them on traffic safety. This study aims to derive indicators that effectively reflect the driving stability of autonomous vehicles by analyzing the driving behavior using the Waymo Open Dataset. Principal component analysis was adopted to derive indicators with high explanatory capability for the dataset. Driving stability indicators were separated into longitudinal and lateral ones. The road segments on the dataset were divided into four based on the characteristics of each, which were signalized and unsignalized intersections, tangent road section, and curved road section. The longitudinal driving stability was 35.48% higher in the curved road sections compared to the unsignalized intersections. With regard to the lateral driving stability, the driving stability was 76.08% higher in the signalized intersections than in the unsignalized intersections. The comparison between curved and tangent road segments showed that tangent roads are 146.87% higher regarding lateral driving stability. The results of this study are valuable for the further research to analyze the impact of autonomous vehicles on traffic safety using real-world data.
