The addition of alginic acid, a natural polysaccharide, to improve the wettability and the reduction of protein adsorption of hydrogel contact lenses. Hydrogel contact lenses were manufactured with various monomers such as 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and NVP (N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone). Alginic acid was added by by the initial mixing method and the interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) method. Properties of contact lens such as contact angle, oxygen permeability, and protein adsorption amount were evaluated. The oxygen permeability and wettability of the IPN-treated alginate samples were higher than those of the samples that were not treated with IPN. The physical properties were improved as the concentration of IPN-treated alginic acid increased. Protein adsorption decreased by the addition of alginic acid and further decreased with IPN. In particular, contact lenses containing MPC and NVP significantly decreased protein adsorption. Therefore, the effect of alginate on the functional improvement of contact lens was confirmed.
The dielectric properties of semi-IPN poly(phenylene oxide)(PPO) blend/$BaTiO_3$(BT) composites are investigated. The composites are fabricated via melt-mixing of crosslinker and peroxide in precursor PPO composite obtained by precipitating the suspension consisted of PPO, BT and toluene into methylethyl ketone, poor solvent of PPO. The permittivity of the precursor PPO composites shows higher value than that of integral-blended PPO composites by extruder and coincides with the theoretical value calculated by logarithmic rule of mixture. The blend of PPO and cross-linked triallyl isocyanurate is most effective for lowering the permittivity and loss tangent owing to the suppression of the orientation polarization of matrix. In contrast, 4,4'-(1,3-phenylene diisopropylidene) bisaniline, which has amine unit in its structure, increases the permittivity as well as loss tangent of the composite, but it has the ability to densify the matrix resin and the interfacial adhesion between the matrix and filler to improves flexural strength and modulus.
A self-oscillating interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) poly(acrylic acid)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PAA/PEG) hydrogel was prepared by using radical polymerization with a two-step method. The IPN hydrogel was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and morphological analysis. The results indicated that the chains of PEG and PAA twined to form porous structure which is beneficial to water molecules entering inside of the hydrogel. In addition, the pH-responsive behavior, salt sensitivity, swelling/de-swelling oscillatory behaviors and self-oscillation in a closed pH oscillator were also studied. The results showed that the prepared hydrogel exhibited pH-sensitivity, good swelling/de-swelling reversibility and excellent salt sensitivity. The self-oscillating behavior of swelling/de-swelling for the prepared hydrogel was caused by pH alteration coupled with the external media. This study may create a new possibility as biomaterial including new self-walking actuators and other related devices.
Synthesis of interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) of chitosan-gelatin (Cs-Ge) (as a primary network) and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) monomer (as the secondary network) was carried out with different ratio. Its structure was characterized by FT-IR, which indicated that the IPN was formed. The memberanes were studied by swelling, weight loss with time. The interior morphology of the IPN hydrogels was revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); the IPN hydrogels showed a interpenetrated network of NIPAAm/chitosan has layers with more minute stoma and canals compared to interpenetrated network of NIPAAm/gelatin. Lower critical solution temperature (LCST), equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) and deswelling kinetics were measured. The DSC results noticed that LCST of IPN hydrogels with different ratio of Cs/Ge/PNIPAAm are around $33{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. The ESR obtained results showed that with a ratio of Cs/Ge/NIPAAm: 1/1/6, the swelling ratio increased drastically from room temperature to $36^{\circ}C$ but with a ratio of Cs/Ge/PNIPAAm: 1/3/6, decrease significantly at the same condition. Therefore the hydrogels have been changed from a hydrophilic structure to a hydrophobic structure. Furthermore with an increase in temperature from room to the LCST, the ESR of IPN with higher concentration of (PNIPAAm) and (Ge) decreases but de-swelling kinetics of them are faster. Due to the suitable and different kinetics of de-swelling and the equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) in various proportions, and because of the morphology inside the mass which confirms other tests, these hydrogels are very appropriate as a smart thermosensitive hydrogels with rapid response.
PHEAs [${\alpha}$,${\beta}$-poly(2-hydroxyethyl-DL-aspartamides)], a class of poly(amino acid), have been widely studied as biodegradable and biocompatible polymers for potential biomedical and pharmaceutical applications. In this study, we investigated a homogeneous blend of PHEA with poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PNVP) and its semi-IPN (semi-interpenetrating polymer network) gels. Blend films were prepared by a solution casting method. The resulting blends were totally transparent over the whole composition ranges and the single $T_g$, changing monotonously with composition, was observed by DSC to confirm the miscibility between these two polymers. FTIR was used to discuss the possible hydrogen-bonding interaction between polymers. In addition, semi-IPN type gels were prepared by chemical crosslinking of PHEA/PNVP blend solution using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI) as a crosslinking reagent. The prepared gel was characterized by their swelling property and morphology.

A series of interpenetrating polymer networks(IPN) based on Epoxy, MA and PU were synthesized in order to improve withstand voltage properties of Epoxy resin. Dielectric breakdown characteristics are investigated for six types of specimens. As a result, it was found that impulse voltage dielectric breakdown characteristic of SIN specimen was the most excellent. It was also found that SIN specimens were stronger than anything else in scanning electron microscopy. On the other hand, as a result of consideration of dielectric breakdown strength change according to adding fi1ter, it was confirmed that the decrease of dielectric breakdown strength are controlled slightly by IPN method.
In this paper, the variable absorption rates and DC dielectric breakdown strength of epoxy composites were measured at boiling absorption condition in order to observe the influences of moisture in out door use. Also, in order to improve withstand voltage properties at moisture absorbtion condition. IPN (interpenetrating polymer network) method which had been already reported, was introduced and the influence was investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the moisture absorption rate was increased and DC dielectric breakdown strength was degraded with boiling time and filler content increasing. On the other hand, it was confirmed that moisture absorption rate and DC dielectric breakdown strength degrading rate were lowered by the improvement of adhesion strength In IPN specimens.

In this study, in order to improve the problem that dielectric breakdown strength decrease remarkably at high temperature, simultaneous interpenetrating polymer networks method was Introduced so that epoxy insulating material could have stable temperature characteristics and stable dielectric breakdown characteristics at whole temperature range. So network structure of epoxy/$SiO_2$ composite material was changed by adding MA and MA/PU into epoxy resin. DC voltage is applied into the specimen fabricated by this method, and then the result was compared and investigated.
