  • Designed by star architect of Moshes Safdie, Raffles City Chongqing includes a total of 6 mega high-rise towers 250 to 380 m tall, a sky conservatory, a 5-storey high shopping mall and a 3-storey basement car parking. Located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jailing Rivers, the site for the project is imbued with a significance that is immediately symbolic, both as a sign of Chongqing's important past and as a vivid indicator of the city's thriving present and future. The design for the project to be situated at this gateway takes as its governing idea the image of powerful sails upon the water. The outer facades of the project's eight towers - the transparent surfaces that will face the water to the north - are meant to recall a fleet of ancient Chinese ships, with their huge rectangles of white canvas filled by the wind. This is a $1.13million\;m^2$ mega scale integrated project of office, retail, hotel, service residence and high-end residence with the transportation hub and traffic circulation at various levels of the project. This paper presents the multi-dimensional hybrid design, engineering and construction of this mega scale project. The innovations and the cutting-edge technology used in this project are introduced and discussed benchmarking the design and construction of the skyscraper cluster in a major city like Chongqing of China.

  • Recently, the Korean government has been actively promoting the smart city as their strategic agenda. However, to build smart cities that are greener, the authors believe it is essential to rapidly transit conventional energy sources such as fossil fuels to renewable energy. Although there is a big potential for Offshore wind in Korea, there has not been a full-scale commercial offshore wind farm until today. Since Korea is relatively a new market compared to the EU, it can be risky for developers. The authors will introduce risk management best practices in the offshore wind industry applicable to the Korean environment. This paper will mainly introduce an offshore wind project size of 99 MW. The project is expecting a Finance Close (FC) in Q3 2022, so the project team has prepared a risk register with over 150 risks and levers throughout the project lifecycle. Overall risks include risks with Development Expenditure (DEVEX) impact, a Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) impact, and an Operating Expenditure (OPEX) impact. Based on the identified risks, a more qualitative assessment of Cost and Schedule Impact was conducted. In conclusion, a Monte Carlo simulation was performed to propose a quantitative risk assessment to evaluate a benchmark contingency of the project cost.

  • Infrastructure development as national project suffers from social conflict which is one of main risk to be managed. Social conflicts have a negative impact on not only the social integration but also the national economy as they require enormous social costs to be solved. Against this backdrop, this study analyzes social conflict using articles published by online news media based on web-crawling and natural language processing (NLP) techniques. As an illustrative case, the Jeju Naval Base (JNB) project which is one of representative conflict case in South Korea is analyzed. Total of 21,788 articles and representative keywords are identified annually. Additionally, comparative analysis is conducted between the extracted keywords and actual events occurred during the project. The authors explain actual events in the JNB project based on the extracted words by the year. This study contributes to analyze social conflict and to extract meaningful information from unstructured data.

  • In bidding documents, valuable information about the project exists in the form of text. When undertaking a new bid, it is necessary to refer to relevant documents from previous bidding projects, similar to the current one, to effectively understand the requirements and characteristics of the project. However, manually comparing and analyzing these documents is a time-consuming and costly process. Especially with the incorporation of emerging technologies like BIM, comparing and analyzing documents involving these new technologies requires a deeper level of expertise and understanding, posing a significant challenge. To tackle this knowledge gap, this study aims to develop a BERT-based approach to assess project similarity for Korean bidding documents. To achieve the research goal, a two-stage strategy was adopted: 1) the development of a Korean tokenizer for bidding documents in BIM technology, and 2) word embedding using BERT and project similarity analysis employing cosine similarity. The developed BERT-based similarity analysis model can automatically evaluate each project and identify the most similar project. By matching target projects with the best benchmarks, this research can assist individuals in making more accurate and timely decisions.
