  • The configurations of the evaporator and condenser of a water chiller can be determined from the trade-off between the heat transfer area, which is related to the capital cost and the pressure drop, which is associated with the operational cost. In this study, the design of the water chiller focused on minimizing the water pressure drop of both condenser and evaporator for given cooling capacity and requirements. Commercial enhanced tubes were employed to simulate real-life conditions. The results of the present analysis were compared with those obtained by HTRI software for verifying them. The results indicated that a reduction in the water pressure drop, which is associated with the short length of a tube, can be effected by decreasing the number of tube passes and increasing the number of tubes and the tube diameter. However, using a large number of tubes with smaller diameters can reduce the capital cost because the tubes are short. The reduction of the capital cost is due to the fact that a small-diameter tube has low internal thermal resistance and hence contributes to a decrease in the overall thermal resistance per unit length.

  • The present study explored the way to desalinate seawater for agricultural irrigation using forward osmosis (FO) process using liquid fertilizer as draw solution. FO experiments were performed in a cross flow mode using flat sheet FO membrane. The effect of membrane orientation, flow rate, and draw solution concentration on the performance of forward osmosis was investigated by measuring water flux of forward osmosis membrane. The water flux when the draw solution was placed against the membrane active layer was lower than the water flux when the feed solution was placed against the membrane active layer. This results indicated that the decrease of effective osmotic pressure by dilutive internal concentration polarization was less than that by concentrative internal concentration polarization. Increasing flow rate from 66.7 to 133.1 $cm^3$/min resulted in increase of the water flux when the membrane active layer orient to draw solution and feed solution, respectively. The reduction of resistance to water flow increased water flux at higher flow rate. The water flux of FO membrane increased with increasing draw solution concentration from 10000 to 30000 mg/L. The water flux for $KH_2PO_4$ draw solution was similar to that for commercial fertilizer. Optimization of FO process would contribute to economically desalinate brackish water for agricultural use.

  • Peritoneal dialysis (PD)-related peritonitis is a major cause of injury and technique failure in patients undergoing PD. Aeromonas hydrophila is ubiquitous in the environment, and is a Gram-negative rod associated with infections in fish and amphibians in most cases; however, it can also cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. We report a case of A. hydrophila peritonitis in a 56-year-old male on automated PD. Peritonitis may have been caused by contamination of the Set Plus, a component of the automated peritoneal dialysis device. Although Set Plus is disposable, the patient reused the product by cleansing with tap water. He was successfully treated with intraperitoneally-administered ceftazidime and has been well without recurrence for more than 2 years.

  • Criteria for rehabilitation priority are discussed to evaluate structural stability of deteriorated water transport and transmission pipes, in this study. For the purposes, safety factor is introduced and estimated by measuring tensile strength and by analyzing stress caused by the internal-external loads working on buried pipe body. Related informations are surveyed and collected under various conditions in the fields by digging out and the structural stability is assessed. In the evaluation results of structural safety, it is shown that steel pipe is more affected by external load than internal load. The average external load is estimated as $53.7kg/cm^2$ and total hoop stress is estimated by $2676.5kg/cm^2$. Also, Poisson effect into longitudinal direction due to internal and external loads is most influential on hoop stress. The calculated safety factors of hoop stress are ranged from 0.7 to 5.2 with average value of 2.1, considering a bending stress to longitudinal direction. The decision of rehabilitation priority by safety factors show that structural safety of CIP sample 1(S1) was assessed at the lowest order with safety factor value, 0.7 and that of DI sample 15(S15) was evaluated as the most stable in structural aspect.

  • In this study, the probabilistic internal pressure fragility analysis was performed by using the non-linear finite element analysis method. The target structure is one of the containment buildings of typical domestic pressurized water reactors(PWRs). The 3-dimensional finite element model of the containment building was developed with considering the large equipment hatches. To consider uncertainties in the material properties and structural capacities, we performed the sensitivity analysis of the ultimate pressure capacity with respect to the variation of four important uncertain parameters. The results of the sensitivity analysis were used to the selection of the probabilistic variables and the determination of their probabilistic parameters. To reflect the present condition of the tendon pre-stressing force, the data of the pre-stressing force acquired from the in-service inspections of tendon forces were used for the determination of the median value. Two failure modes(leak, rupture) were considered and their limit states were defined to assess the internal pressure fragility of target containment building. The internal pressure fragilities for each failure mode were evaluated in terms of median internal pressure capacity, high confidence low probability of failure(HCLPF) capacity, and fragility curves with respect to the confidence levels. The HCLPF capacity was 115.9 psig for leak failure mode, and 125.0 psig for rupture failure mode.

  • The stability of shallow cavities with an arbitrary profile is a difficult issue in geotechnical engineering. This paper investigates this problem on the basis of the upper bound theorem of limit analysis and the Hoek-Brown failure criterion. The influence of pore pressure is taken into consideration by regarding it as an external force acting on rock skeleton. An objective function is constructed by equating the internal energy dissipation to the external force work. Then the Lagrange variation approach is used to solve this function. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparing the analytical solutions with the published research. The relations between shallow and deep cavity are revealed as well. The detaching curve of cavity roof with elliptical profile is obtained. In order to facilitate the application of engineering practice, the numerical results are tabulated, which play an important role in tunnel design and stability analysis of roof. The influential factors on potential collapse are taken into consideration. From the results, the impact of various factors on the extent of detaching is seen intuitively.

  • In paste backfill mining, cemented coal gangue-fly ash backfill (CGFB) can effectively utilize coal-based solid waste, such as gangue, to control surface subsidence. However, given the pressurized water accumulation environment in goafs, CGFB is subject to coupling effects from water pressure and chloride ions. Therefore, studying the influence of pressurized water on the chlorine salt erosion of CGFB to ensure green mining safety is important. In this study, CGFB samples were soaked in a chloride salt solution at different pressures (0, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa) to investigate the chloride ion transport characteristics, hydration products, micromorphology, pore characteristics, and mechanical properties of CGFB. Water pressure was found to promote chloride ion transfer to the CGFB interior and the material hydration reaction; enhance the internal CGFB pore structure, penetration depth, and chloride ion content; and fill the pores between the material to reduce its porosity. Furthermore, the CGFB peak uniaxial compression strain gradually decreased with increasing soaking pressure, whereas the uniaxial compressive strength first increased and then decreased. The resulting effects on the stability of the CGFB solid-phase hydration products can change the overall CGFB mechanical properties. These findings are significant for further improving the adaptability of CGFB for coal mine engineering.

  • Heat transfer characteristics of a direct contact heat exchanger utilizing sieve trays and spray nozzles for steam condensation for the purpose of combining with a LNG evaporator have been investigated with various cooling water flow rates and different vacuum pressures within the heat exchanger for the purpose of steam condensation. Temperature profiles and the volumetric overall heat transfer coefficients in a direct contact heat exchanger have been obtained for comparisons. The results show that the temperature differences between cooling water and steam along the direct contact heat exchanger height are rapidly decreasing and the volumetric overall heat transfer coefficients of the exchanger improves greatly as the inside vacuum pressure increases. The values of the overall heat transfer coefficients at P=-680mmHg have been increased significantly compared with at atmospheric pressure. At given pressure conditions, it is found that the values of average volumetric overall heat transfer coefficients for the sieve tray are found to be approximately 10% higher than those of the spray nozzle.

  • Subsea pipelines have been operated with buried depths of 1.2-4m underneath the seabed to prevent buoyancy and external impacts. Therefore, they have to show resistance to both the soil load and the hydrostatic pressure. In this study, the structural integrity of a subsea pipeline subjected to soil load and hydrostatic pressure was evaluated by using FE analyses. A parametric study showed that the internal pressure increased the plastic collapse depth by increasing the resistance to plastic collapse. The hoop stress increased with an increase in the buried depth for the same water depth; however, the hoop stress decreased with an increase in the water depth for the same buried depth.
