  • Objectives: This study evaluated the effectiveness of Sayeok-san for treating insomnia. Methods: We conducted a search using keywords, such as "Sayeoksan", "Si-ni-san", and "insomnia" in eight databases (CNKI, Wanfang, Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane, NDSL, OASIS, RISS) on July 17, 2012. There was no limit placed on the publication period of the papers, and we used Cochrane's risk of bias tool to assess their quality. Meta-analysis was classified according to the outcome measurements, such as total effective rate and PSQI. Results: Nine RCTs were selected. Meta-analysis showed that the treatment group, which used Sayeok-san, had a higher total effective rate than did the control group that used only Western medicine. The treatment group also had a lower average of PSQI and TSS (TCM symptom score) than did the control group. Conclusion: This study suggests that Sayeok-san is effective in treating insomnia. However, these findings should be interpreted cautiously due to unknown or high risk of bias of the included trials.

  • Objectives: This study examines the effect of Sagunja-tang on functional dyspepsia (FD) through a systematic review and meta-analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Methods: A search for RCTs that tested the effect of Sagunja-tang on functional dyspepsia was conducted in Medline, Embase, PubMed, CENTRAL, CiNii, CNKI, NDSL, RISS, OASIS, and KISS databases on November 8, 2020, with no limit on the year of publication. A meta-analysis was performed by synthesizing the findings, including total efficiency, clinical symptom score, myosin light-chain kinase (MLCK) level (pg/mL, and gastric half-emptying time (min). RevMan 5.4.1 software was used for data analysis. The quality of the literature was evaluated using Cochrane's risk of bias (RoB) tool. Results: A total of 14 RCTs met the selection criteria. As a result of the meta-analysis, the treatment group had higher total efficacy and MLCK levels (gastric antrum, jejunum) than the control group, and the clinical symptom score and gastric half-emptying time were lower. However, due to the low quality of the included RCT and the small sample size, the results may be slightly biased.

Methods: Clinical studies about Daegunjoong-tang for improvement of gastrointestinal motility after surgery due to gastrointestinal cancer were identified in a literature search using the search term "Daikenchuto AND cancer AND ileus." The studies were analyzed in terms of design, inclusion and exclusion of participants, intervention, control, outcomes, and results. Results: Nine articles were identified in the literature search. Four trials included colon cancer participants with colectomy, and three studies included gastric cancer with total gastrectomy. The intervention in each case was Daegunjoong-tang, and most interventions were made by a pharmaceutical company with a Good Manufacturing Practice facility. The most frequently used control was a placebo. The methods were diverse, including measuring gastrointestinal function, motility, quality of life, symptom scores with a numeric rating scale, and blood tests. Safety was investigated by recording adverse events. Conclusions: Some issues were discovered by reviewing the existing clinical research about Daegunjoong-tang for improvement of gastrointestinal motility after surgery for gastrointestinal cancer. These results will be utilized as evidence for using Daegunjoong-tang in clinical practice and designing a clinical trial for Korean patients.

  • Objectives: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease of the elderly characterized by impaired behavior from lack of dopamine secretion. However, no accurate quantitative diagnosis method has been established. The purpose of this study was to analyze the patent trends (PTs) of health examination and daily monitoring/healthcare technology for PD. Methods: For analyzing PTs, a search summary for classifying each analysis target technology was set, and a final search formula was constructed by collecting keywords. After constructing a database of related patents through the final search formula, noise was removed to extract valid patents. PTs by major countries were analyzed using the valid patents, and PTs and growth stages were analyzed by the detailed technologies. Results: The survey analysis showed that, despite the existence of unpublished patents between 2018 and 2020, patent activity has increased rapidly in the recent period, and this increasing trend was led by the USA. This technology is considered to be in its early- or mid-stage growth period, which means that the marketability is high and the barriers are low. Korea's market share is only about 25%, but it has a larger number of applications than those of Europe and Japan. Integrated monitoring and diagnosis technologies for PD have a share of 34%. Conclusion: The advances in diagnosis and healthcare technology for PD means that traditional Korean medicine must continue to pay attention to related technologies and to review plans that are applicable to clinical practice.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the debate on the use of medical devices between Western Medicine and Korean Medicine, as this is one of the greatest conflicts in Korea's medical profession. Judicial precedents and interpretations of authority serve as regulations because medical affairs law states that Korean Medicine practices are ambiguous. Method: We conducted a search in the Korean RISS, OASIS, and DBPIA databases using several keywords associated with medical devices, Korean Medicine, and Korean Medicine Doctors. The search period was until November 5 2021. The retrieved papers were classified according to the selection and exclusion criteria by checking the title, abstract, and text. For precedents, searches were done regarding comprehensive legal information, etc., and in the case of non-disclosure precedents, we requested access to the precedents by web-court requests. Results: A total of 80 documents were found as a result of the search, and 13 publications were included in the study. The selected publications were classified and analyzed by this research team into Korean medicine, Western medicine, and legal or state agency research. In the existing literature and judgments, the arguments that played a major role changed depending on the time the judgment was made. "Social conventions", "curriculum", "academic principles", and "health and hygiene dangers" were the key arguments. Conclusions: Further studies will be needed that can comprehensively arrange the existing literature and clinical results, and continuous study will be needed to verify that the use of medical devices by Korean medicine doctors is helpful for prognosis and accurate treatment of their patients.

  • Intraocular tumors are uncommon and an intraocular metastatic carcinoma is extremely rare. An intraocular metastasis in adults most often originates from the breast or the lung. An intraocular lesion may be the first presentation of cancer and a search should be made to locate the primary tumor. To our knowledge, an intraocular metastasis of a bronchioloaveolar carcinoma has not reported in Korea. We report a case of a bronchioloalveolar carcinoma presenting with the initial symptom of a unilateral visual disturbance due to an intraocular metastasis.
