A Promising Treatment for Broncholith Removal Using Cryotherapy during Flexible Bronchosopy: Two Case Reports

  • Broncholiths are defined as calcified materials that occur in a tracheobronchial tree or in a cavity communicating with that. Broncholith has variable clinical features. The therapeutic options to remove broncholiths are so variable that clinicians need to select the most safe and effective methods by mass size, mobility, and location. As yet, there is no consistent guideline removing a broncholith. We report 2 successful cases of removing a fixed broncholith by flexible bronchoscopy guided cryoadhesion. With repeated technique of thawing and freezing with cryoprobe, we could extract the fixed broncholith safely. This method is promising as a way to remove broncholith in the future.

  • Bronchial foreign body aspirations are uncommon in adults and usually have various underlying conditions, otherwise accidentally occurred in dental procedure, medical, surgical procedure. The most commonly aspirated objects were food materials, with peanuts leading the list. When bronchial foreign body was aspirated, no definite respiratory symptoms or foreign body is may not seen, then diagnosis is delayed. Therefore late complications was developed. The tendency to use fiberoptic bronchoscope for removal of foreign bodies in adults is increased. We report a rare case of bronchial pneumonia due to occult aspiration of a twig before 1 year with a review of the literatures.

  • Carcinoma of the prostate is a common malignancy affecting elderly men. Lung metastasis from prostate cancer occurs frequently, but tumor metastasis to the central bronchi that clinically mimics primary bronchogenic carcinoma are very rare. We report a 73-year old man with endobronchial metastasis from prostatic carcinoma presented with respiratory symptom cough. Diagnosis of tissues taken from materials which were used for bronchoscopic biopsy and prostate biopsy and immunohistochemical staining for prostate specific antigen (PSA) confirmed a case of endobronchial metastasis from prostatic carcinoma. Hormonal therapy (LHRH agonist) was applied to this patient.

Research Trends of Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED용 지연형광 소재의 연구 동향)

  • The development of highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials is an active area of recent research in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) since the first report by Chihaya Adachi in 2011. Traditional fluorescent materials can harvest only singlet excitons, leading to the theoretically highest external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5% with considering about 20% light out-coupling efficiency in the device. On the other hand, TADF materials can harvest both singlet and triplet excitons through reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from triplet to singlet excited states. It could provide 100% internal quantum efficiencies (IQE), resulting in comparable high EQE to traditional rare-metal complexes (phosphorescent materials). Thanks to a lot of efforts in this field, many highly efficient TADF materials have been developed. This review focused on recent molecular design concept and optoelectronic properties of TADF materials for high efficiency and long lifetime OLED application.

The dilatancy and numerical simulation of failure behavior of granular materials based on Cosserat model

  • The dilatancy of granular materials has significant influence on its mechanical behaviors. The dilation angle is taken as a constant in conventional associated or non-associated flow rules based on Drucker-Prager yields theory. However, various experimental results show the dilatancy changes during progressive failure of granular materials. A non-associated flow rule with evolution of dilation angle is adopted in this study, and Cosserat continuum theory is used to describe the behaviors of granular materials for considering to some extent the its internal structure. Numerical examples focus on the bearing capacity and localization of granular materials, and results illustrate the capability and performance of the presented model in modeling the effect on failure behavior of granular materials.

Microstructure Evolution and Dielectric Characteristics of CaCu3Ti4O12 Ceramics with Sn-Substitution

  • The doping effect of Sn on the microstructure evolution and dielectric properties was studied in $CaCu_3Ti_{4-x}Sn_xO_{12}$ polycrystals. Samples were produced by a conventional solid-state reaction method. Sintering was carried out at $1115^{\circ}C$ for 2-16 h in air. The dielectric constant and loss were examined at room temperature over a frequency range between $10^2$ and $10^6$ Hz. The microstructure was found to evolve into three stages. Addition of $SnO_2$ led to an increase in density and advanced formation of abnormal grains. The formation of coarse grains with a reduced thickness of the boundary brought about an enhanced dielectric constant and a lower dielectric loss below ~1 kHz. EDS data showed the Cu-rich phase along the grain boundary, which should contribute to the improved dielectric constant according to the internal barrier layer capacitor model. After all, $SnO_2$ was an effective dopant to elevate the dielectric characteristics of $CaCu_3Ti_{4-x}Sn_xO_{12}$ polycrystals as a promoter for abnormal grain growth.

A Study on Filter Performance of Materials in Embankment Slope during Heavy Rain (강우시 성토사면 재료의 필터조건검토에 대한 연구)

  • This paper presents the characteristics of internal erosion of embankment slopes due to the localized heavy rain. In this study, the existing analysis methods of filter performance in embankment materials were reviewed. Based on the theoretical concept of filter conditions to prevent particles from being carried in from the adjacent embankment materials, new analysis method was suggested. According to the new analysis method for filter performance, experimental programs were carried out to investigate the filter performance for controlling and sealing any leak which develops through the embankment materials as a result of internal erosion. Three sets of small scale laboratory tests were carried out with changing the main influence factors such as rainfall intensity, gradient of slope, embankment material condition. It was found that the new analysis method for filter performance to prevent particles from being carried in from the adjacent embankment materials was more capable approach to design the filter materials in embankment slopes. The new criterion or method for satisfactory filter performance, therefore, was recommended.

Comparing a tablet computer and paper forms for assessing patient-reported outcomes in edentulous patients

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to determine whether two methods of documentation, print and electronic forms, for the assessment of patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in complete denture wearers provide comparable results. The study also quantified the time needed for filling the forms by each method. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty participants enrolled in a university clinic answered two forms (a questionnaire for denture satisfaction and OHIP-EDENT). They provided answers with two application methods in a random order, with a one-month interval between them: (1) electronic forms on a tablet computer; and (2) print forms. The methods were compared in terms of mean results, correlation/agreement, internal consistency, and spent time. RESULTS. Mean results for both methods were similar for each denture satisfaction item (100-mm VAS) and OHIP-EDENT summary score. Both questionnaires presented good internal consistency regardless of the application method (Cronbach's ${\alpha}=0.86$ or higher). Correlation and agreement between the methods regarding specific items was at least moderate for the majority of cases. Mean time for the electronic and print forms were 9.2 and 8.5 minutes, respectively (paired t test, P=.06, non-significant). CONCLUSION. The electronic method is comparable to print forms for the assessment of important PRO of prosthetic treatment for edentulism, considering the results and time needed. Findings suggest the viability of replacing print forms with a tablet for applying the tested inventories in clinical trials.

  • Carbon fiber-reinforced silicon carbide (Cf-SiC) and SiC / SiC composites have high thermal conductivity, and excellent corrosion and wear resistance, a low coefficient for thermal expansion and are lightweight. This is why they are commonly used in parts of the aerospace industry to develop an aircraft thrust deflector, jet vane, combustion chamber, elevens, body flap, and a shingle. So, understanding how this state-of-the-art Cf-SiC affects both internal and external crack detection and determining issues during the manufacturing process of composite materials, should be evaluated according to valuation techniques in the external environment. In this paper, we apply a non-contact air ultrasonic technique of non-destructive testing techniques to perform a study on internal defect detection identification and assessment of carbon-fiber reinforced silicon carbide composites to perform basic research and applied research.

Design and homogenization of metal sandwich tubes with prismatic cores

  • Hollow cylindrical tubes with a prismatic sandwich lining designed to replace the solid cross-sections are studied in this paper. The sections are divided by a number of revolving periodic unit cells and three topologies of unit cells (Square, Triangle and Kagome) are proposed. Some types of multiple-topology designed materials are also studied. The feasibility and accuracy of a homogenization method for obtaining the equivalent parameters are investigated. As the curved elements of a unit cell are represented by straight elements in the method and the ratios of the lengths of the curved elements to the lengths of the straight elements vary with the changing number of unit cells, some errors may be introduced. The frequencies of the first five modes and responses of the complete and equivalent models under an internal static pressure and an internal step pressure are compared for investigating the scope of applications of the method. The lower bounds and upper bounds of the number of Square, Triangular and Kagome cells in the sections are obtained. It is shown that treating the multiple-topology designed materials as a separate-layer structure is more accurate than treating the structure as a whole.
