Complete genome sequences of 22 isolates of Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus (CABYV), collected from melon plants showing yellowing symptom in Korea during the years 2013-2014, were determined and compared with previously reported CABYV genome sequences. The complete genomes were found to be 5,680-5,684 nucleotides in length and to encode six open reading frames (ORFs) that are separated into two regions by a non-coding internal region (IR) of 199 nucleotides. Their genomic organization is typical of the genus Polerovirus. Based on phylogenetic analyses of complete nucleotide (nt) sequences, CABYV isolates were divided into four groups: Asian, Mediterranean, Taiwanese, and R groups. The Korean CABYV isolates clustered with the Asian group with > 94% nt sequence identity. In contrast, the Korean CABYV isolates shared 87-89% sequence identities with the Mediterranean group, 88% with the Taiwanese group, 81-84% with the CABYV-R group, and 72% with another polerovirus, M.. Recombination analyses identified 24 recombination events (12 different recombination types) in the analyzed CABYV population. In the Korean CABYV isolates, four recombination types were detected from eight isolates. Two recombination types were detected in the IR and P3-P5 regions, respectively, which have been reported as hotspots for recombination of CABYV. This result suggests that recombination is an important evolutionary force in the genetic diversification of CABYV populations.
A major performance stage carpenter, Jang Insang led performance stages from the 1719 Sukjong Royal Banquet and was confirmed by historical records to be the first craftsman. Lee Wandeuk led the Hwaseong Fortress performance stages of the Jeongjo period and Gichuk Jinchan performance stages of the Sunjo period. The carpenter techniques he used during the Jeongjo period were succeeded to the Sunjo period. Ahn Sungil was the head craftsman who led the performance stages of Jagyeongjeon Jinjak, Muja Jinjak, and Gichuk Jinchan of the Sujo period, under which the foundation for court palace performances was laid. The progression of major carpenters includes Jang Insang of the Sukjong period, Jeon Yoochu of the Yeongjo period, Ahn Sugil of the Sunjo period, Yoon Seoksin of the Heonjong period, Kim Yoonsik of the Gojong period, Lee Jongyoon, Kim Soongil, Seo Sangmook, and Han Sujoon. In addition, the Major Repair of Injeongjeon Hall (1857) of the Cheoljong period was the most important palace construction project for transferring the carpenters' skills. Through this project, Ahn Sungil of the Sunjo period, Kim Myeonggap, Yoon Seoksin of the Heonjong period, Kwon Deuknyang, and Kim Sungil of the Gojong period were able to interact with each other. That is, this major repair project of Injeongjeon Hall reflected the major carpenters' best techniques through performance stage construction, showing the progression of Ahn Sungil, Yoon Seokshin, and Kim Sungil, who led the constructions of Gichuk Jinchan of the Sunjo period (1829), Mushin Jinchan of the Heonjong period (1848), and Jeonghae Jinchan of the Gojong period (1887), the most impressive performance stages of the late Joseon period. The carpenters of the court performance stages participated in important construction projects of the royal palace, reflecting the superior technical skills of the carpenters in the construction of court palace performance stages. The carpenters who played a leading role in the construction of performance stages were able to interact with one another and transfer their excellent technical skills, providing the driving force that allowed court performance stages to blossom into splendid and high-quality court stages in the late Joseon Dynasty.
This study provides basic data for future design proposals aimed at improving the uniforms and bullet/stab proof garments of local police. An analysis was conducted on various aspects of the uniforms used until 2015 and those newly introduced in 2016. Current bullet/stab proof garments were compared with old stab proof garments; in addition, police force posting on the internal SNS were analyzed in regards to the improvement needs for uniforms. Analyses results are as follows. As for the uniforms, convenience was improved by eliminating the necktie, and the four trigrams embroidery was added to emphasize the Korean identity. Cargo-style pants were added for enhanced activity, and the color of the top was changed to turquoise to improve discrimination. In terms of material, durable polyester was used heavily in outside uniforms that were likely to be damaged during work; consequently, the percentage of elastic materials was increased for improved activity. The price showed a high increase rate due to inflation and the use of functional new materials. Complaints and demands for improvement continued despite various modifications made to uniforms and suggested a strong need for further improvements that reflected the opinions of wearers. As for the protective garments, there was a limit to reducing the final weight despite the use of lightweight material because of protection performance enhancements made from expanding the protection surface area. Also, considering further decrease in supply rate, it was deemed necessary to secure budget for full supply of bullet/stab proof garments.

The pressure reducing valve for water is controlled by the load of the compression spring and the force of the fluid acting on the diaphragm of the stem. Repeated upward and downward reciprocation of the pressure-reducing valve stem damages the diaphragm, resulting in leakage. In this study, we designed a stem without a diaphragm and adjusted the stiffness of the compressing spring. In order to select the spring stiffness, springs offering a stiffness of -20%, -10%, 0%, and 10% with respect to the stiffness of the compression spring attached to the existing pressure reducing valve stiffness. A prototype for the pressure reducing valve was fabricated and the pressure change was evaluated for the target static pressure (6 bar) by testing the pressure characteristics after mounting the modified stem and each compression spring. Evaluation of the pressure characteristics was carried out using ASSE 1003 and KS B 6153. In addition, the flow rates were compared by internal flow analysis of the conventional pressure reducing valve and the pressure reducing valve using the modified stems, and the flow analysis was performed using Solidworks flow simulation 2018. The spring stiffness was constantly discharged at the target static pressure of 3.793 kgf/mm, and the flow rate was increased by about 15% compared with the conventional pressure reducing valve.

The aim of this study was to develop a new efficient strategy that uses the Vector form Intrinsic Finite-element (VFIFE) method to conduct the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes. Nonlinear problems, such as large displacement, small strain, and contact and collision, can be analyzed using a unified calculation process in the VFIFE method according to the fundamental theories of point value description, path element, and reverse motion. This method enables analysis without the need to integrate the stiffness matrix of the structure, because only motion equations of particles established according to Newton's second law are required. These characteristics of the VFIFE facilitate the modeling and computation efficiencies in analyzing the nonlinear dynamic problem of flexible pipe with large deflections. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) dynamical model based on 3-D beam element was established according to the VFIFE method. The deep-sea flexible pipe was described by a set of spatial mass particles linked by 3-D beam element. The motion and configuration of the pipe are determined by these spatial particles. Based on this model, a simulation procedure to predict the 3-D dynamical behavior of flexible pipe was developed and verified. It was found that the spatial configuration and static internal force of the mining pipe can be obtained by calculating the stationary state of pipe motion. Using this simulation procedure, an analysis was conducted on the static and dynamic behaviors of the flexible mining pipe based on a 1000-m sea trial system. The results of the analysis proved that the VFIFE method can be efficiently applied to the static and dynamic analyses of marine pipes.

Bellows are corrugated mechanical elements used to absorb displacements or vibrations caused by temperature changes, pressure, earthquakes, waves, etc., which are welded to flanges or directly connected to pipes. Expansion joint bellows must not only be designed to sufficiently withstand the internal pressure of the pipes but also accommodate axial, transverse, and rotational deformations to minimize the transfer of forces to the sensitive components of the system. Bellows have various types of corrugations, but U-type bellows are most commonly used in general piping systems. In this study, the behavior of U-shaped one-, two-, and three-ply bellows with the same inner diameter under pressure and forced displacement was analyzed using the finite element method. The results were compared with the design formula in the Expansion Joint Manufacturers Association (EJMA)'s code. Manufacturer data were used for the applied pressure and force displacement. The behavioral characteristics of the three cases were compared via structural analysis because the stress levels will be different for each model, even if they have the same inner diameter. Since the analytical model has an axisymmetric shape but displacement occurs in the transverse direction, the finite element model was composed of 1/2 of the whole model, and ANSYS Workbench 17.2 was employed for the analysis.
In this paper, a study of stability and health of a newly-built railway tunnel is presented. The field test was implemented to monitor the secondary lining due to the significant cracking behaviors influenced the stability and health of the tunnel structure. Surface strain gauges were installed for monitoring the status of crack openings, and the monitoring outputs demonstrated that the cracks were still in the developing stage. Additionally, adjacent tunnel and poor condition of surrounding rock were identified as the causes of the lining cracking by systematically characterizing the crack spatial distribution, tunnel site and surrounding rock conditions. Reconstruction of partial lining and reconstruction of the whole secondary lining were designed as the maintenance projects for different cracking regions based on the construction feasibility. For assessing the health conditions of the reinforced lining, embedded strain gauges were set up to continuously measure the strain and the internal force of the reconstructed structures. For the partially reconstructed lining, the outputs show the maximum tensile elongation is 0.018 mm during 227 days, which means the structure has no obvious deformation after maintenance. The one-year monitoring of full-section was implemented in the other two completely reconstructed cross-sections by embedded strain gauge. The outputs show the reconstructed secondary lining has undertaken the pressure of surrounding rock with the time passing. According to the calculated compressive and tensile safety factors, the completely reconstructed lining has been in reliable and safe condition during the past year after reinforcement. It can conclude that the aforementioned maintenance projects can effectively ensure the stability and health of this tunnel.

Drilling equipment is an essential part used in various fields such as construction, mining, etc., and it has drawn increasing attention in recent years. The drilling method is generally divided into three types. There are a top hammer method that strikes on the ground, a DTH (Down-The-Hole) method that directly strikes a bit in an underground area, and a rotary method that drills by using rotational force. Among them, the DTH method is most commonly used because it enables efficient drilling compared to other drilling methods. In the conventional DTH hammer, the valve between the piston and the bit is opened and closed using a face to face method. In order to improve the power of the DTH hammer, a DTH hammer with foot valve which is capable of instantaneous opening and closing is used in the drilling field. In this study, we designed a lab-scale DTH hammer with the foot valve, and manufactured an evaluation device for the experiment of the DTH hammer. In addition, we analyzed the performance of the DTH hammer adopted with foot valve according to the pressure range of 3-10 bar. As a result, the internal pressure distribution in the DTH hammer was experimentally analyzed, and then, the movement of the piston according to the pressure was predicted. We believe that this study provides the useful results to explain the performance characteristics of the DTH hammer with the foot valve.
Protection mechanisms for skin damage of ultraviolet (UV) absorbers in personal care products for protection against UV are well studied, but not for hair protection. The purpose of this study is to describe and compare the changes of physical property produced in human hair by doses of the UV-B exposure causing protein degradation. To observe the change of physical properties in hair, the experimental intensity of UV-B exposure has been established on the basis of statistical data from official meterological administration as daily one hour sunlight exposure for two weeks. Polysilicone-15, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (OMC), and octocrylene were employed for UV-B absorber, and those were treated to hair swatch by rubbing wash through shampoo and conditioner. Bending rigidity displayed kinetically successive reduction at high doses of UV exposure up to the 8,000 s, and exhibited different level at each sample of UV-B absorber. However, the values of Bossa Nova Technologies (BNT) for shinning factor were already saturable at the 2,000 s exposure except that treated with polysilicone-15. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to measure a strength of inner protein produces a successive reduction of enthalpy as like a reduction of bending rigidity upon UV exposure. Surface roughness from lateral force microscope (LFM) acquired immediately after UV exposure show a saturable frictional voltage which has been also found in a saturable BNT data as the time of UV exposure increases. Through researching the DSC and the LFM, shinning of hair was much correlated to the protein damage at the surface, and bending rigidity could be regulated by the protein structural damage inside hair. Therefore, the optimization of efficient strategy for simultaneous prevention of hair protein on the surface and internal hair was required to maintain physical properties against UV.
This paper aims to identify the causes and mechanisms of contraction-expansion noise in refrigerators and proposes noise reduction methods. Contraction-expansion noise generated in refrigerators is mainly due to stick-slip phenomenon occurring on the contact surface between inner parts. Friction experiments were conducted to identify the factors causing the stick-slip phenomenon. Furthermore, the vibration level of the internal components was measured to determine the characteristics and location of the contraction-expansion noise. Based on the experimental results, experiments have been conducted to verify the noise characteristics for each factor. From this, it was confirmed that the friction experiment and the refrigerator contraction-expansion noise generation location and frequency were the same. The vibration level also increased as the vertical force was increased due to load loading. Also, it was confirmed that the contraction-expansion noise was reduced when the surface roughness was increased. Therefore, it was concluded that increasing the surface roughness of the contact surface in the same way as the results of the friction experiment was the method of reducing contraction-expansion noise.
