  • The solidification sequence and formation of intermetallic phase of Fe-rich Al-Si-Cu alloy were investigated by using real-time imaging of synchrotron X-ray radiation. Effects of cooling rate during uni-directional solidification on the resultant solidification behavior was also studied in a specially constructed vacuum chamber in the SPring-8 facility. The series of radiographic images were complementarily analyzed with conventional analysis of OM and SEM/EDX for phase identification. Detailed solidification sequence and formation mechanisms of various phases were discussed based on real-time image analysis. The growth rates of $\alpha$-AlFeMnSi and ${\beta}-Al_5FeSi$ were measured in order to understand the growth behavior of each phase. It is suggested that real-time imaging technique can be a powerful tool for the precise understanding of solidification behavior of various industrial materials.

  • Intermetallic compound NbAl₃and amorphous phases were synthesized by mechanical alloying of elemental powder mixtures of niobium and aluminum. The composition of the powder mixtures was Nb-45wt%Al(75at%Al). The mechanical alloying was performed with a high energy SPEX 8000 mixer/mill up to 72 hrs. The resulting powders were analyzed by XRD, DTA, SEM and TEM. The mechanically alloyed powders exhibited lamellar structures in the early stage. And the elements of Nb and Al were homogeneously distributed over the Powder when a steady state was reached. An intermetallic compound, NbAl₃, was formed by mechanical alloying for 4 hrs. The mechanically alloyed powders exhibited a large exotherm around 600℃, corresponding to formation of stable NbAl₃and stress relief.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve hardness and wear resistance of high strength yellow brass by adding Fe, Cr, Mn, Si and Ni. Results showed that NiO, $FeCr_2O_4$ and intermetallic compound $Mn_5Si_3$ were produced when Ni, Fe-Cr and Mn-Si were added to the yellow brass. The hardness and wear tests showed the best results with the presence of the product precipitates and intermetallic compound. The calculation of relative wear resistance by volume fraction of each phases showed that the relative wear resistance of $Mn_5Si_3$ had the highest value, that of ${\beta}$ phase had the lowest. Observation of the worn surface showed that the main wear mechanism were found to be the abrasive wear, and also showed that the wear is caused by mechanical failure at the early stage.

  • Coating brittle intermetallic compounds on metal can enlarge the range of their use. It is found that intermetallic compound coating layers made by only combustion synthesis in an electric furnace have porous multi-phase structures containing several intermediate phases, even though the coating layers show good wear resistance. In this study, dense $Ni_{3}Al$ single phase layer corresponding to the initial composition of the mixed powder is coated on two different ferrous materials by the diffusing treatment after combustion synthesis. After- ward, sliding wear behaviors of the coating layer are evaluated in comparison with that of the coating layer with porous multi-phase structure made by only combustion synthesis. As a result, the wear properties of the coating layer composed of dense $Ni_{3}Al$ single phase are considerably improved at the range of low sliding speed com- pared with that of the coating layer with porous multi-phase structure, particularly in the running-in wear region. This is attributed to the fact that wear of the coating layer is progressed by shearing as a sequence of adhesion, not by occurring of pitting on the worn surface due to having dense structure without pores.

  • In this study, high temperature wetting analysis and AZ80/Ti interfacial structure observation are performed for the mixture of AZ80 and Ti, and the effect of Al on wetting in Mg alloy is examined. Both molten AZ80 and pure Mg have excellent wettability because the wet angle between molten droplets and the Ti substrate is about 10° from initial contact. Wetting angle decreases with time, and wetting phenomenon continues between droplets and substrate; the change in wetting angle does not show a significant difference when comparing AZ80-Ti and Mg-Ti. As a result of XRD of the lower surface of the AZ80-Ti sample, in addition to the Ti peak of the substrate, the peak of TiAl3, which is a Ti-Al intermetallic compound, is confirmed, and TiAl3 is generated in the Al enrichment region of the Ti substrate surface. EDS analysis is performed on the droplet tip portion of the sample section in which pure Mg droplets are dropped on the Ti substrate. Concentration of oxygen by the natural oxide film is not confirmed on the Ti surface, but oxygen is distributed at the tip of the droplet on the Mg side. Molten AZ80 and Ti-based compound phases are produced by thickening of Al in the vicinity of Ti after wetting is completed, and Al in the Mg alloy does not affect the wetting. The driving force of wetting progression is a thermite reaction that occurs between Mg and TiO2, and then Al in AZ80 thickens on the Ti substrate interface to form an intermetallic compound.

  • As a basic study on the production of $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}N_{x}$ system rare earth permanent magnet by the reduction and diffusion(R- D) process, firstly the reduction reaction of $Sm_2O_3$ by metallic Ca and diffusion of Sm into Fe powder was investigated for the production the $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}$intermetallic compound. We concluded that the former case was very rapidly completed under the high temperature greater than 100$0^{\circ}C$ and the latter case of completion of diffusion reaction of Sm into the center of Fe powder(perfect homogenization condition) was required through 3h R- D reaction at 110$0^{\circ}C$ and identified as a rate determining step(RDS) on the whole reaction. Though $SmFe_2,SmFe_3$, and $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}$phases in the growth of phases of intermetallic compound in the Sm - Fe binary system were obseved below 100$0^{\circ}C$, but only $Sm_{2}Fe_{17}$phase was observed at lIOO$^{\circ}C$. Oxygen and Ca contents of the final sample in this work were 0.72wt% and O. 11 wt% respectively.

  • To know the bonding phenomena of Ti/Cu brazed joint, a characteristic of microstructures in bonding interlayer of vacuum brazed pure Ti to Cu has been studied in the temperature range from 1088 to 1133K for various bonding times using Ag-28wt%Cu filler metal. Also intermediate phases formed in bonded interlayer and behavior of layer growth have been investigated. The obtained results in this study are as follows: 1) Liquid insert metal width at the each brazing temperature was proportional to the square root of brazing time, and it was considered that the liquid insert metal width was controlled by the diffusion rate process of primary .alpha.-Cu formed at the Ti side. 2) Intermediate phases formed near the Ti interface were .betha.-Ti and intermetallic compounds TiCu, Ti$_{2}$Cu, Ti$_{3}$Cu, and TiCu. 3) .betha.-Ti formed in Ti base metal durig brazing transformed to lamellar structure, .alpha.-Ti + Ti$_{2}$Cu. The structure came from the eutectoil decomposition reaction in cooling. And the width of .betha.-Ti layer was proportional to the square root of brazing time, and it was considered that the growth of .betha.-Ti layer was controlled by interdiffusion rate process in .betha.-Ti. 4) The layer growth of TiCu, Ti$_{3}$Cu$_{4}$ and TiCu, phases formed near the Ti interface was linerface was linearly proportional to the brazing time, and it was considered that the layer growth of these phases was controlled by the chemical reaction rate at the interface.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the influence of a sigma phase precipitation on the pitting corrosion resistance and microstructural change of super duplex stainless steels(UNS S32750). The welds made by FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) were heat treated ($930^{\circ}C$, $1080^{\circ}C$, $1230^{\circ}C$) and quenched. Based on the microstructural examination, it was found that the ${\sigma}$ phase was formed in base metals and welds heat treated at $930^{\circ}C$ while there were little ${\sigma}$phases formed in base metals and weld metal experienced the relatively fast cooling from $1080^{\circ}C$ and $1230^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, the most weight loss due to pitting corrosion occurred in base and weld metals heat treated at $930^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that the pitting corrosion occurred in the phase boundaries of ferrite/sigma and austenite/sigma. The pitting corrosion resistance decreased owing to an increase in Cr, Mo depleted areas adjacent to the intermetallic phases such as ${\sigma}$phases. The hardness was greatly increased due to the precipitation ${\sigma}$phases.

  • AC8A matrix composites reinforced with Ni-aluminide were fabricated by squeeze casting process, and the characteristics and nature of the growth of Ni-aluminide phases at the interface between nickel and aluminurn were investigated. In the as-cast composites, the reaction layer between Ni skeleton and aluminum matrix was found to be $NiAl_3$, regardless of the casting temperatures and the kinds of preforms. During high temperature solution treatment the $NiAl_3$ layer grew and formed new $Ni_2Al_3$ layer. Because of presence of the porosity formed by Kirkendall effect at the interface between $NiAl_3$ and aluminum matrix, the tensile strength of composites was inferior to that of AC8A matrix alloy. However, the composites exhibited superior wear resistance due to the formation Ni-aluminide intermetallic phases. Composite A, of which Ni skeleton was fully transformed into Ni-aluminide, shows better wear resistance than that of composite B which still possessed some unreacted Ni skeleton.

  • To clarify the influence of precipitation microstructure and inclusion on the monotonic tensile fracture behaviors in 2090 alloy aged at $180^{\circ}C$, the detailed measurement of hardness, tensile strength, elongation and the observation of scanning electron micrography, transmision electron micrography have been carried out. The transgranular shear ductile fracture has been observed in specimen quenched after solution treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 45min. While the under-aged specimen was fractured in both transgranular shear ductile and intergranular fracture mode, the fracture mode of peak-aged and over-aged alloy was predominantly intergranular fracture. The fracture behavior of each ageing condition was influenced by the change of precipitation microstructural features. In the case of peak-aged and over-aged alloys, the coarse and heterogeneous slip band caused by both shearable nature of the ${\delta}^{\prime}(Al_3Li)$ precipitates and PFZ along the high angle grain boundary aid the localization of deformation, resulting in low energy intergranular fracture. It was also estimated that the fractured T-type intermetallic phases (inclusion) and the equilibrium ${\delta}$(AlLi) phases which were formed at grain boundaries palyed an important role in promoting intergranular fracture mode.
