  • The mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated for CFRP laminates with different types of nonwoven tissues and the source of increased mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was examined by SEM analysis in this paper. The interlaminar fracture toughness in mode II is obtained by an end notched flexure test. The experiment is performed using three types of non-woven tissues: 8 $g/m^2$ of carbon tissue, 10 $g/m^2$ of glass tissue, and 8 $g/m^2$ of polyester tissue. On the basis of the specimen with no non-woven tissue, interlaminar fracture toughness on mode II at specimens inserted with non-woven carbon and glass tissues and polyester tissues increases as much as 166.5% and 137.1% and 157.4% respectively. The results show that mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP laminates inserted with nonwoven tissues increased due to the fiber bridging, fiber breakage, and hackle etc. by SEM analysis.

  • Several tests of the Double Cantilever Beam(DCB) were carried out for influence of the fiber orientation on the Mode I of the interlaminar fracture behavior in the Carbon/Epoxy composites. The interlaminar fracture toughness of Mode I was estimated based on the energy release rate of Mode I, $G_{I}$. The fracture toughness at crack initiation, $G_{IC}$, increases from type A to type E. The fracture toughness, $G_{IR}$ , is almost constant macroscopically for type A and type E when crack propagates. $G_{IR}$ for types B, C, D increases rapidly at the beginning of the crack growth then it decreases gradually. The fracture surface observation by SEM was also obtained the same results. Consequently the influence of the fiber orientation on the Mode I Interlaminar fracture behavior was made clear.ear.

  • Polymeric composites can be subjected to a wide variety of environmemtal conditions in practical use. One of most important conditions to be considered in the stuctural design using such materials is the miisture envirnment. Thus the moisture effect on interlaminar fracture toughness $G_IC$ and $G_IIC$ of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic) composed of carbon fibers and epoxy resin is studied in this paper. Specimens were first processed in 25, 50, $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water and $25^{\circ}C$ sea water for various periods of time. After that, the water absorption and fracture toughness tests were performed under laboratory atmosphere. As result, the specimen processed in $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water indicates the highest misture absorbing capability, the second in $50^{\circ}C$ flesh water, the third in $25^{\circ}C$ sea water, and the specimen in $25^{\circ}C$ flesh water does the lowest. The interlaminar fracture toughness $G_IC$ increases, approaches to the maximum, and decreases as the immersion time increases. In case of interlaminar $G_IIC$, the value of the specimen processed in $80^{\circ}C$ flesh water turns out to be higher than others. In addition, the scanning electron micrographs(SEM) of fracture surfaces were also examined in order to explain the mechanism of fracture.

  • Mode II interlaminar fracture behaviors of carbon fabric/epoxy composites, which are applicable to tilting train carbodies, was investigated by the ENF (End notched flexure) test. The specimens were made of CF3327 plain woven fabric with epoxy and a starter delamination at one end was made by inserting Teflon film with the thickness of 12.5$mu$m or 25.0$mu$m. The equation for mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was suggested based on the effective crack length from the compliance of load-displacement curve. Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated for several types of the specimens. Also crack propagating behaviors and fracture surfaces were examined through an optical travelling scope and a scanning electron microscope.

  • The Interlaminar fracture behavior of hybrid composite with non-woven carbon tissue was investigated under Mode I (DCB) and Mode II (ENF) loading condition. Hybrid composites were manufactured by means of inserting a non-woven tissue between prepreg layers. Two kinds of specimens were prepared from [0]$_{24}$ and [$0_{12}/0_{12}$]. Where, the symbol "/" means that a non-woven carbon tissue was located at 0/0 mid-plane of the specimen. The interlaminar fracture toughness of hybrid composites was compared with that of CFRP. The fracture surfaces of the specimens were observed using optical microscope and SEM, and the failure mechanism was discussed. The hybrid laminates, which are made by inserting non-woven carbon tissue between layers, were shown to be effective to remarkably improve Mode II fracture toughness.toughness.

  • In this study, the interlaminar fracture behaviors of laminated GFRP composites were investigated, and the results could be used for damage tolerance design based on fracture mechanics. Three types of laminated GFRP composites that can be used as high voltage insulating materials in magnet systems were fabricated in order to study the interlaminar fracture behavior according to the molding process. The values of interlaminar fracture toughness for the VPI, prepreg, and HPL laminate were $1.9MPa{\cdot}^{1/2}$, $1.7MPa{\cdot}^{1/2}$, and $2.2MPa{\cdot}^{1/2}$, respectively. HPL laminate showed the best fracture resistance. The failure modes of HPL and VPI were similar to that of an adhesive joint, and prepreg laminates showed partial cohesive failure mode due to internal voids.

  • The interlaminar problems near the free edge of composite laminates are analyzed in this paper. CFRP specimen ([+40/-40]s) and interleaved specimen ([+40//-40]s) with non-woven carbon tissue (NWCT) are discussed under tensile loading condition. The symbol “//”means that the NWCT is located between the CFRP interfaces. The NWCT has carbon short fibers which are discretely distributed with the in-plane random orientation. It was reported/sup 3)/ that the Mode Ⅱ interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP laminates with NWCT is increased largely and the Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness is not changed significantly. Mode Ⅲ interlaminar fracture toughness is also an important factor in composite structures. But it is not easy to experimentally investigate the Mode Ⅲ interlaminar fracture toughness. The objective of this work is to study the effect of the NWCT and to fundamentally understand the Mode Ⅲ interlaminar shear characteristics of laminated composites with NWCT in the vicinity of a free edge by using finite element method analysis.

  • Model I interlaminar fracture behaviors of the carbon/epoxy composite, one of the candidate composites for a tilting train carbody, were investigate by the use of DCB(Double cantilever beam) specimens. These specimens were made of CF3327 plain woven fabric with epoxy resin, and an artificial starter delamination was fabricated by inserting Teflon film with the thickness of $12.5{\mu}m$ of $25.0{\mu}m$ at the one end of the specimen. Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated for the specimens with the different thickness of an inserter. Also delamination propagating behaviors and interlaminar fracture surface were examined through an ooptical travelling scope and a scanning electron microscope. We found that abruptly unstable crack propagation called as stick-slip phenomena was observed. In addition, interlaminar fracture behaviors were affected on the location and the morphology of a crack tip as well as an interface region.

  • The investigate the effect of fiber orientation on the interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber reinforced plastics three prepregs which are domestic products are used in this paper. Those are used for the unidirectional composites, but only one is used for the cross-ply laminate composites which is molded $[0/90]_{6s},\;[0/45]_{6s},\;and\;[0/45/90]_{4s}$. The specimens used for the mode I and mode II Tests are DCB and ENF samples are examined by scanning electron microscope(SEM). The value of $G_{IC}$ is almost same when modified three calculating methods are applied. The highest value of $G_{IC}$at crack initiation is obtained at the $[0/90]_{6s}$ interlaminar and the lowest one is at the $[0/45/90]_{4s}$ interlaminar. The highest value of $G_{IIC}$ at crack initiation, however, is obtained at the $[0/90]_{6s}$ interlaminar and the lowest one is at the $[0/45]_{6s}$. The photographs of SEM show a difference behaviour between mode I and mode II fracture surface.
