Conductive SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjection a 40:60(vol%) mixture of zirconium diborided ($ZrB_2$) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering (SPS) under argon atmosphere. Inner diameters of graphite mold were $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$, respectively. The relative densities of $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$ sample were 99.4% and 97.88%, respectively. Reactions between ${\beta}$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed via x-ray diffraction (hereafter, XRD) analysis. The result of FE-SEM of fracture face of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was intergranular fracture and that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample was transgranular fracture. Because the fracture strength of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was much higher than that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample. The electrical resistivity, $9.37{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was higher than that, $6.17{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample because of densification. Although sintering condition of SPS is same. the properties of sintered SiC-$ZrB_2$ compacts were changed according to inner diameter of graphite mold.
The Monkman-Grant (M-G) and its modified parameters were estimated for modified type 316LN and $9{\sim}12Cr-1Mo$ steels with chemical variations. Several sets of creep data were obtained by constant-load creep tests in $550-650^{\circ}C$ ranges. The relation parameters, m, $m^*$, C and $C^*$ were proposed and discussed for two alloy systems. In creep fracture mode, type 316LN steel showed domination of the intergranular fracture caused by growth and coalescence of cavities. On the other hand, the Cr-Mo steel showed transgranular fracture of the ductile type caused from softening at high temperature. In spite of the basic differences in creep fracture modes as well as creep properties, the M-G and its modified relations demonstrated linearity within the $2{\sigma}$ standard deviation. The value of the m parameter of the M-G relation was 0.90 in the 316LN steel and 0.84 in the Cr-Mo steel. The value of the $m^*$ parameter of the modified relation was 0.94 in the 316LN steel and 0.89 in Cr-Mo steel. The modified relation was superior to the M-G relation because the $m^*$ slopes almost overlapped regardless of creep testing conditions and chemical variations to the two alloy systems.
It has been reported that high temperature structural components represent the phenomenon of material degradation according to a long term service under high temperature and pressure. Especially, fossile power plant components using the fossil fuel and heavy oil are affected by dewpoint corrosion of $H_2SO_4$produced during a combustion. Therefore, the service materials subjected to high temperature and pressure may occur the stress corrosion cracking. The object of this paper is to investigate SCC susceptibility according to the material degradation of the high temperature structural materials in dewpoint corrosive environment-$H_2SO_4$.The obtained results are summarized as follows : 1) In case of secondary superheater tube, the fractograph of dimple is observed at the concentration of $H_2SO_4$-5%. When the concentration of $H_2SO_4$ is above 10%, the fracture mode is shifted from a transgranular fracture to an quasi-intergranular fracture according to the increment of concentration. 2) In the relationship between [$\Delta$DBTT]$_sp$ and SCC susceptibility, it is confirmed that the greater material degradation degree is, the higher SCC susceptibility is. In addition, it can be known that SP test is useful test method to evaluate SCC susceptibility for high temperature structural components. 3) When [$\Delta$DBTT]$_sp$ is above 17$17^{\circ}C$ the SCC fracture behavior is definitely observed with SCC susceptibility of above 0.4.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of shot peening on the fatigue strength and fatigue life of two kinds of aluminum alloys. The fatigue strength behavior of aluminum alloys were estimated by the stress ratio and shot velocities. The fatigue life and strength increased with increasing the test shot velocity. However, at the shot velocity range between 50m/s and 70m/s, the compressive residual stress phenomena were observed in test conditions of different shot velocity. The optimal shot velocity is acquired by considering the peak values of the compressive residual stress, dislocations, brittle striation, slip, and fisheye on the fracture surface of test specimen. It was observed from the SEM observation on the deformed specimen that the brittle striation, fisheye were showed in the intergranular fracture structure boundaries at the this velocities. Therefore, fatigue strength and fatigue life would be considered that shot velocity has close relationship with the compressive residual stress.
Laser assisted machining (LAM) has been researched in order to machine the silicon nitride ceramics economically and effectively. LAM is an effective machining method by local heating of the cutting part to the softening temperature of the silicon nitride using laser beam. When silicon nitride ceramics is heated using a laser beam, the surface of silicon nitride ceramic is softened, oxidized and decomposed. And then surface hardness is decreased. Through machining in low viscosity and hardness conditions, silicon nitride was machined effectively and the life span of tool was increased. The plastic deformation was occurred due to softening of amorphous YSiAlON above $ 1,000^{\circ}C$. Transgranular fracture of ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ was occurred when YSiAlON was not softened, but mostly intergranular fracture was occurred by the plastic deformation of softened YSiAlON.
This study analyzed the causes of failure of SCM435 bolts that fix the springs of automobile air brakes that have been fractured during use. The cause of failure was analyzed using SEM, EDS, metallogical microscope and Vickers hardness tester. In the fracture, the ratchet mark began at the outer boundary of crack origin, and the grains at crack origin were found to have clear intergranular corrosion. One SCM435 bolt was subjected to a stress of 398 MPa, it's a stress of about 80% of the fatigue limit. As a result of such a large applied stress, cracks occurred at the corrosion origin and were fractured. In order to prevent the SCM435 bolt from fracture, it is necessary to use the correct composition, the accuracy of heat treatment, preventing damage by external impact, preventing corrosion of the damage part by moisture, and introduction a compressive residual stress by peening.
Post weld heat treatment(PWHT), at more than 600.deg. C, is essential to remove residual stress and hydrogen in weld HAZ and improve fatigue characteristics. However, residual stress during PWHT is responsible for PWHT embitterment and it promotes precipitation of impurities to grain boundary. In this paper, the effect of stress simulated residual stress on fatigue failure was evaluated by fatigue test, microhardness test and fractograph. The obtained results are summarized as follows; (1) The fatigue crack growth rate(da/dN) of parent and heat treated parent was affected by microstructure due to heat treatment and it depended on stress intensity factor (.DELTA.k). (2) The fatigue strength of weld HAZ was dependent on applied stress during PWHT and da/dN after PWHT was slower than as-weld. (3) Softening amount of weld HAZ was bigger than any other due to PWHT. Hardness value of weld HAZ was affected by heat treatment under the applied stress of 10 $kgf/mm^2$, but beyond 20 $kgf/mm^2$ it was increased by the applied stress rather than heat treatment. (4) Beyond the applied stress of 20 $kgf/mm^2$ during PWHT, intergranular fracture surface was observed and its amount was increased with applied stress during PWHT. (5) Effect of applied stress during PWHT on aspect of fracture surface was larger rather than that on fatigue crack growth behavior.
The-steady-state creep mechanism and behavior of Zircaloy-4 used as cladding materials in PWR have been investigated in air environment over the temp, ranges from 600 to $645^{\circ}C$ and stress ranges from 4 to $7kg/mm^2$. The stress exponents for the creep deformation of this alloy, n were decreased 4.81, 4.71, 4.64, and 4.56 at 600, 615, 630 and $645^{\circ}C$, respectively; the stress exponents decreased with increasing the temperature and got closer to about 5. The apparent activation energies, Q, were 62.1, 60.0, 57.9 and 55.4 kcal/mole at stresses of 4, 5, 6, $7kg/mm^2$, respectively; the activation energies decreased with increasing the stress and were close to those of volume self diffusion of Zr in Zr-Sn-Fe-Cr system. In results, it can be considered that the creep deformation for Zircaloy-4 was controlled by the dislocation climb over the ranges of this experimental conditions. Larson-Miller parameter, P, for the crept specimens was obtained as P=(T+460)(logt,+23). The failure plane observed by SEM slightly showed up intergranular fracture at this experiment ranges. However, it was essentially dominated by the dimple phenomenon, which was a characteristics of the transgranular fracture.
In this paper, in order to investigate the effects of marco and microscopic observations of fatigue crack growth in friction stir welded (FSWed) 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plates, fatigue crack growth tests were performed under constant amplitude loading condition at room temperature with three different pre-cack locations, namely base metal (BM-CL) and two kinds of pre-crack locations in welded joints, weld metal (WM-CL) and heat affected zone (HAZ-CL) specimens. The fatigue crack growth behavior of FSWed 7075-T651 aluminum alloy plates were discussed based on the marco and microscopic fractographic observations. The marcoscopic aspects of surface crack growth path for BM-CL and HAZ-CL specimens indicate relatively straight lines, however, the crack growth paths of WM-CL specimens grow first straight and by followed toward the TMAZ and HAZ. The microscopic aspects of fatigue fracture for BM-CL and HAZ-CL specimens indicate typical fatigue striation, but WM-CL showed intergranular fracture pattern by micro structural changes of FSW process.
