  • In stratified flows of two immiscible liquids, due to the vibration in a pipe, the shape of the interface is not always periodic and it causes the different end points of the interfacial boundary. In this case the performance is not good. To solve this, in this paper, the hybrid-type Fourier series is proposed, which consists of both the polynomial and the trigonometric terms. Under the stationary interfacial boundary during acquiring a full set of voltage data, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated through the numerical experiments. The results show that the proposed method performs better than the conventional Fourier series in estimating the interfacial boundary.

  • In this research, the impact behavior of the boundary between MMC-reinforced SiC whisker and Al alloy were studied. It is known that the resultant of the interfacial reaction between SiC whisker and Al alloy has brittle and low toughness property. In this paper, impact behavior of graded MMC & Al alloy shows the interfacial opening at the boundary. Generally this phenomenon is generated by thermal residual stress, brittle interfacial reaction resultant and difference of the deflection. So, these results may be interpreted as a macroscopic method of measuring the interfacial strength between matrix and reinforcement

  • Interfacial stress singularity induced in an analysis model consisting of the polymeric thin film and the elastic substrate has been investigated using the boundary element method. The interfacial singular stresses between the viscoelastic thin film and the elastic substrate subjected to a uniform moisture ingression are investigated for the case of a small interfacial edge crack. It is assumed that moisture effects are assumed to be analogous to thermal effects. Then, the overall stress intensity factor for the case of a small interfacial edge crack is computed. The numerical procedure does not permit calculation of the limiting case for which the edge crack length vanishes.

  • Grain boundaries play a major role in determining device performance, particularly of polysilicon-based photodetectors. Through the post-annealing of as-deposited polysilicon and then, the analysis of electric behavior for a metal-polysilicon-metal (MSM) photodetector, we were able to identify the influence of grain boundaries. A modified model of polysilicon grain boundaries in the MSM structure is presented, which uses a crystalline-interfacial layer-SiOx layer- interfacial layer-crystalline system that is similar to the Si-SiO2 system in MOS device. Hydrogen passivation was achieved through a hydrogen ion implantation process and was used to passivate the defects at both interfacial layers. The thin SiOx layer at the grain boundary can enhance the photosensitivity of an MSM photodetector by decreasing the dark current and increasing the light absorption.

  • In this paper, an interfacial crack length has been detected by using the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient on the adhesively bonded double-cantilever beam (DCB) joints. The correlations between energy release rates which were investigated by experimental measurement, the boundary element method (BEM) and Ripling's equation are compared with each other. The experimental results show that the interfacial crack length for the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and energy release rate increases proportionally. From the experimental results, we propose a method to detect the interfacial crack length by using the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and discuss it.

  • Density currents formed by buoyancy discharges from rivers are numerically studied using non-dimensional two layer model including Coriolis acceleration, bottom stress, interfacial friction. Some typical numbers such as Froude number, densimetric Froude number and Kelvin number are obtained and some characteristic scales are defined as a result of non-dimensionalization of the governing equations. Besides the Coriolis effect, the configurations of bottom topography, bottom friction coefficient and interfacial friction are found to significantly affect the propagation of the warm water plume. Frontal position can fastly propagate in the case of large density difference between the two layers and small interfacial friction. Left side boundary current is easily formed under the small interfacial friction. With large Kelvin number, both right and left side boundary currents are formed. Wave-like disturbances and eddies are easily formed under the high Froude number.

  • Interfacial stress singularity in a unidirectional two-dimensional laminate model consisting of an elastic fiber and a viscoelastic matrix has been investigated using the time-domain boundary element method. First, the interfacial singular stresses between the fiber and the matrix of a unidirectional laminate subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain have been investigated near the free surface, but without any defect or any edge crack. Such a stress singularity might lead to fiber-matrix debonding or interfacial edge cracks. Then, the overall stress intensity factor for the case of a small interfacial edge crack of length a has been computed.

  • The ultrasonic attenuation coefficients were measured by interfacial crack length in the adhesive components of double-cantilever beam(DCB). The energy release rate, G, was obtained by the experimental measurement of compliance. The numerical analysis by the boundary element method(BEM) and Ripling's equation was investigated. The experimental results represent that the relation between interfacial crack length for the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and energy release rate is increased proportionally. A measurement method of the interfacial crack length by the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was proposed and discussed.

  • The transition of serrated grain boundary and its effect on liquation behavior in the simulated weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) have been investigated in a wrought Ni-based superalloy Alloy 263. Recently, the present authors have found that grain boundary serration occurs in the absence of adjacent coarse ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles or $M_{23}C_6$ carbides when a specimen is direct-aged with a combination of slow cooling from solution treatment temperature to aging temperature. The present study was initiated to determine the interdependence of the serration and HAZ property with a consideration of this serration as a potential for the use of a hot-cracking resistant microstructure. A crystallographic study indicated that the serration led to a change in grain boundary character as special boundary with a lower interfacial energy as those terminated by low-index {111} boundary planes. It was found that the serrated grain boundaries are highly resistant to boron enrichment, and suppress effectively grain coarsening in HAZ. Furthermore, the serrated grain boundaries showed a higher resistance to susceptibility of liquation cracking. These results was discussed in terms of a significant decrease in interfacial energy of grain boundary by the serration.

  • The active metal brazing was applied to bond Alumina and Ni-Cr steel by Ag-Cu-Zr-Sn alloy and the interfacial microstructure and reaction mechanism were investigated. Polycrystalline monoclinic $ZrO_2$ with a very fine grain of 100-150 nm formed at the alumina grain boundary contacted with Zr segregation layer at the interface. The $ZrO_2$ layer containing the inclusions and cracks were developed at the boundary of inclusion/$ZrO_2$ due to the difference in specific volume. The development of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of $ZrO_2$ at the interface was successfully explained by the preferential penetration of Zr atoms a higher concentration of oxygen and a high diffusion rate of Al ions into molten brazing alloy.
