The objective of the study is to examine the characteristic correlations between reinforcing carbon fiber and interfacial adhesion agent since the interfacial adhesion strength between reinforcing carbon fiber and matrices is believed to be an essential element influencing the physical properties in carbon fiber reinforced cement composite using slurry method. The integrity of interfacial adhesion between reinforcing fiber and cement not only affects the quality of fiber reinforced cement composite but also influences to a large degree the physical properties of the cement composite when producing carbon fiber reinforced cement composite using slurry method. Having analyzed the physical properties 1.e., water content, tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural toughness of carbon fiber reinforced cement composite specimens, C-PAM(cation polyacrylamide) was determined to be an optimum interfacial adhesion agent. The study has also demonstrated that interfacial adhesion strength varies largely on the content and type of the reinforcing fiber. Judging from magnified view of the tensile shear cross-section using VMS(video microscope system), interfacial adhesion strength between reinforcing fiber and matrices is affected by the type of interfacial adhesion agent. According to the result of the experiments, C-PAM was determined to be an ideal interfacial adhesion agent when using carbon fiber in producing carbon fiber reinforced cement composite with the optimum content of carbon fiber being established.
The mechanical properties of carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites (CFRPs) are greatly dependent on the interfacial adhesion between the carbon fibers and the epoxy matrix. Introducing nanomaterial reinforcements into the interface is an effective approach to enhance the interfacial adhesion of CFRPs. The main purpose of this work was to introduce graphitic nanofiber (GNFs) between an epoxy matrix and carbon fibers to enhance interfacial properties. The composites were reinforced with various concentrations of GNFs. For all of the fabricated composites, the optimum GNF content was found to be 0.6 wt%, which enhanced the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and fracture toughness (KIC) by 101.9% and 33.2%, respectively, compared with those of neat composites. In particular, we observed a direct linear relationship between ILSS and KIC through surface free energy. The related reinforcing mechanisms were also analyzed and the enhancements in mechanical properties are mainly attributed to the interfacial interlocking effect. Such an effort could accelerate the conversion of composites into high performance materials and provide fundamental understanding toward realizing the theoretical limits of interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties.
The interfacial adhesion energy between resist and a substrate is very important due to resist pull-off problems during separation of mold from a substrate in nanoimprint process. And effect of substrate surface roughness on interfacial adhesion energy is very important. In this paper, we have treated glass wafer surface using $CF_4$ gas for increase surface roughness and it has tested interfacial adhesion properties of UV resin/glass substrate interfaces by 4 point bending test. The interfacial adhesion energies by bare, 30, 60 and 90 sec surface treatments are 0.62, 1.4, 1.36 and 2 $J/m^2$, respectively. The test results showed quantitative comparisons of interfacial fracture energy (G) effect of glass wafer surface roughness.
Blend of bisphenol-A polycarbonate (PC) and (acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic rubber) terpolymer (ASA) having excellent balance in the interfacial properties and mechanical strength was developed for the automobile applications. Since interfacial adhesion between PC and styrne-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) matrix of ASA is not strong enough, two different types of compatibilizers, i.e, diblock copolymer composed of tetramethyl polycarbonate (TMPC) and SAN (TMPC-b-SAN) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were examined to improve interfacial adhesion between PC and SAN. TMPC-b-SAN was more effective than PMMA in increasing interfacial adhesion between PC and SAN matrix of ASA (or weld-line strength of PC/ASA blend). When blend composition was fixed, PC/ASA blends exhibited similar mechanical properties except impact strength and weld-line strength. Impact strength of PCI ASA blend at low temperature was influenced by rubber particle size and its morphology. PC/ASA blends containing commercially available PMMA as compatibilizer also exhibited excellent balance in mechanical properties and interfacial adhesion.
In this study we have examined electroless chemical plating on the plasma grafted poly [ethylene terephathalate](PET) fabric in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between metal and fiber. The vapour phase of acrylic acid introduced on the PET surface and the graft polymerization was carried out by using cold plasma, resulting in the grafting yield of 0.8-1.3 wt%. The carboxyl group of the plasma grafted was identified by FT-IR-ATR spectra. The Interfacial adhesion was related to the carboxyl group. After electroless chemical plating of nickel, it showed that the more the carboxyl, the better the interfacial adhesion. Comparing to the untreated, the plasma grafted fabric showed fairly good interfacial adhesion(5B grade, ASTM D3359) . The shielding effect of electromagnetic wave showed 95dB. The shielding effect depends on the fabric structure, the surface structure, and the cross sectional shape of fibers. The dense fabric structure, the etched surface like a microcrater, and the trigonal cross sectional shape were prefered.
The effect of $CF_4$ plasma treatment condition on the interfacial adhesion energy of inkjet printed Ag/polyimide system is evaluated from $180^{\circ}$ peel test by calculating the plastic deformation energy of peeled metal films. Interfacial fracture energy between Ag and as-received polyimide was 5.5 g/mm. $CF_4$ plasma treatment on the polyimide surface enhanced the interfacial fracture energy up to 17.6 g/mm. This is caused by the increase in the surface roughness as well as the change in functional group of the polyimide film due to $CF_4$ plasma treatment on the polyimide surface. Therefore, both the mechanical interlocking effect and the chemical bonding effect are responsible for interfacial adhesion improvement in ink jet printed Ag/polyimide systems.
The interfacial adhesion properties of enamel-coated, alloyed steels were in detail characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The surfaces of alloyed steels existed as oxidized states of $Fe_3O_4$. Therefore, the oxidized surfaces of the steels significantly interacted with the coated enamels for the adhesion. Ti-alloyed steel showed many micro-boundaries during thermal treatment and these micro-boundaries might cause the decline of the interfacial adhesion between enamel and steel. The depth profiles of enamel-coated, alloyed steels were investigated by GDS (glow discharge spectroscopy) and Ti component was found to be related to the interfacial adhesion between enamel and steel.
3-D IC integration enables the smallest form factor and highest performance due to the shortest and most plentiful interconnects between chips. Direct metal bonding has several advantages over the solder-based bonding, including lower electrical resistivity, better electromigration resistance and more reduced interconnect RC delay, while high process temperature is one of the major bottlenecks of metal direct bonding because it can negatively influence device reliability and manufacturing yield. We performed quantitative analyses of the interfacial properties of Al-Al bonds with varying process parameters, bonding temperature, bonding time, and bonding environment. A 4-point bending method was used to measure the interfacial adhesion energy. The quantitative interfacial adhesion energy measured by a 4-point bending test shows 1.33, 2.25, and $6.44\;J/m^2$ for 400, 450, and $500^{\circ}C$, respectively, in a $N_2$ atmosphere. Increasing the bonding time from 1 to 4 hrs enhanced the interfacial fracture toughness while the effects of forming gas were negligible, which were correlated to the bonding interface analysis results. XPS depth analysis results on the delaminated interfaces showed that the relative area fraction of aluminum oxide to the pure aluminum phase near the bonding surfaces match well the variations of interfacial adhesion energies with bonding process conditions.
Poly(arylene ether phosphin oxide) (PEPO), Udel$^{\circledR}$ P-1700, Ultem$^{\circledR}$ 1000. poly(hydroxy ether) (PHE), carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether)(C-PHE) and poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine) (PHEA) were utilized for a coating of carbon fibers. Interfacial shear strength(IFSS) of polymers to carbon fibers was also evaluated in order to understand the adhesion mechanism. IFSS was measured via micro-droplet tests, and failure surfaces were analyzed by SEM. Diffusion between polymer and vinyl ester resin was investigated as a function of styrene content; 33. 40 or 50wt.% and the solubility parameters of polymers were calculated. The results were correlated to the interfacial shear strength. The highly enhanced interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was obtained with PEPO coating, and marginally improved IFSS with PHE, Udel$^{\circledR}$ and C-PHE coatings, but no improvement with PHEA and Ultem$^{\circledR}$ coatings.
