  • The bonding phenomenon and mechanism in the transient liquid phase bonding(TLP Bonding) of directionally solidified Ni base superalloy, GTD-111 was investigated. At the bonding temperature of 1403K, liquid insert metal was eliminated by isothermal solidification which was controlled by the diffusion of B and Si into the base metal and solids in the bonded interlayer grew epitaxially from mating base metal inward the insert metal. The number of grain boundaries formed at the bonded interlayer was corresponded with those of base metal. The liquation of grain boundary and dendrite boundary occurred at 1433K. At the bonding temperature of 1453K which is higher than liquation temperature of grain boundary, liquids of the Insert metal were connected with liquated grain boundaries and compositions in each region mixed mutually. In Joints held for various time at 1453t phases formed at liquated grain boundary far from the interface were similar to those of bonded interlayer. With prolonged holding time, liquid phases decreased gradually and liquids of continuous band shape divided many island shape. But liquid phases did not disappeared after holding for 7.2ks at 1453k. Isothermal solidification process at the bonding temperature which is higher than the liquation temperature of the grain boundary was controlled by diffusion of Ti to be result in liquation than B or Si. in insert metal. • An Al film deposited on the Kovar alloy substrate was anodically-bonded to the borosilicate glass, and the bond interfaces was closely investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Al oxide was found to form a layer ~l0 nm thick at the bond interface, and fibrous structure of the same oxide was found to grow epitaxially in the glass from the oxide layer. The fibrous structure grew with the bonding time. The mechanism of the formation of this fibrous structure is proposed on the basis of the migration of Al ions under the electric field. Penetration of Al into glass beyond the interfacial Al oxide was not detected. The comparison of the amount of excess oxygen ions generated in the alkali depletion layer with that incorporated in the Al oxide suggests that the growth of the alkali-ion depletion layer is controlled by the consumption of excess oxygen to form the interfacial Al oxide.

  • During past decades, several types of peptide-based scaffolds, ranging from simple aromatic dipeptide to small protein fragments, have been studied to understand the underlying mechanism and mimic to create artificial nano/microstructures. However, a limited number of design principles have still been reported in peptidic scaffolds allowing well-defined self-assembled structure formation, presumably due to the intrinsic large conformational flexibility of natural peptides. In this presentation, we report the first example of highly homogeneous, well-defined and finite architectures by the ${\beta}$-peptide self-assembly.

  • In this study, the effects of cosurfactant on phase equilibrium and dynamic behavior were studied in systems containing nonylphenol ethoxylate (NP) surfactant solutions and nonpolar hydrocarbon oils. All the cosurfactants used during this study such as n-pentanol, n-octanol and n-decanol acted as a hydrophobic additive and the hydrophobic effect was found to increase with both increases in chain length and amount of addition of a cosurfactant. Dynamic behavior studies under hydrophilic conditions showed that the solubilization of hydrocarbon oil by NP micellar solution is controlled by an interface-controlled mechanism rather than a diffusion-controlled mechanism. Both spontaneous emulsification of water into oil phase and expansion of oil drop were observed under lipophilic conditions because of diffusion of surfactant and water into oil phase. Under conditions of a three phase region including a middle-phase microemulsion, both rapid solubilization and emulsification of oil into aqueous solutions were found mainly due to the existence of ultralow interfacial tension.

  • Stoichiometric, uniform, amorphous ZrO$_2$ films with an equivalent oxide thickness of ∼1.5nm and a dielectric constant of ∼18 were deposited by an atomic layer controlled deposition process on silicon for potential application in meta-oxide-semiconductor(MOS) devices. The conduction mechanism is identified as Schottky emission at low electric fields and as Poole-Frenkel emission at high electric fields. the MOS devices showed low leakage current, small hysteresis(〈50mV), and low interface state density(∼2*10e11/cm2eV). Microdiffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed a localized monoclinic phase of ${\alpha}$-ZrO$_2$ and an amorphous interfacial ZrSi$\_$x/O$\_$y/ layer which has a correspondign dielectric constant of 11

  • We investigated the interface defect engineering and reaction mechanism of reduced transition layer and nitride layer in the active plasma process on 4H-SiC by the plasma reaction with the rapid processing time at the room temperature. Through the combination of experiment and theoretical studies, we clearly observed that advanced active plasma process on 4H-SiC of oxidation and nitridation have improved electrical properties by the stable bond structure and decrease of the interfacial defects. In the plasma oxidation system, we showed that plasma oxide on SiC has enhanced electrical characteristics than the thermally oxidation and suppressed generation of the interface trap density. The decrease of the defect states in transition layer and stress induced leakage current (SILC) clearly showed that plasma process enhances quality of $SiO_2$ by the reduction of transition layer due to the controlled interstitial C atoms. And in another processes, the Plasma Nitridation (PN) system, we investigated the modification in bond structure in the nitride SiC surface by the rapid PN process. We observed that converted N reacted through spontaneous incorporation the SiC sub-surface, resulting in N atoms converted to C-site by the low bond energy. In particular, electrical properties exhibited that the generated trap states was suppressed with the nitrided layer. The results of active plasma oxidation and nitridation system suggest plasma processes on SiC of rapid and low temperature process, compare with the traditional gas annealing process with high temperature and long process time.

  • The behavior of hydroxide ions on water-ice films was studied by using $Cs^+$ reactive ion scattering (RIS), low energy sputtering (LES) and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). A $Cs^+$ beam of a low kinetic energy (<100 eV) from $Cs^+$ ion gun was scattered at the film surface, and then $Cs^+$ projectiles pick up the neutral molecules on the surface as $Cs^+$-molecule clusters form (RIS process). In LES process, the preexisting ions on the surface are desorbed by the $Cs^+$ beam impact. The water-ice films made of a thick (>50 BL) $H_2$O layer and a thin $D_2O$ overlayer were controlled in temperatures 90~140K. We prepared hydroxide ions by using Na atoms which proceeded hydrolysis reaction either on the ice film surface or at the interface of the $H_2O$ and $D_2O$ layers.[1] The migration of hydroxide ions from the $H_2O/D_2O$ interface to the top of the film was examined as afunction of time. From this experiment, we show that hydroxide ions tend to reside at the water-ice surface. We also investigated the H/D exchange reactions of $H_2O$ and $D_2O$ molecules mediated by hydroxide ions to reveal the mechanism of migration of hydroxide to the ice surface.

  • In order to elucidate thermal stability of Fe-$Fe_2Ti$ eutectic structure, the initial several structures have been investigated in the changes of coarsening and spheroidization during prolonged annealing under the eutectic temperature. The results are as follows: 1) The rate constant of coarsening and spheroidization was formulated as $S^{-n}-S_0^{-n}=k{\cdot}t$, where S is the total area of the interface between ${\alpha}$ and C($Fe_2Ti$) per unit volume, $S_0$ is initial value and k is the rate constant. 2) The coarsening and spheroidization mechanism was described by Ostwald ripening and controlled by diffusion of Ti-atom in ${\alpha}$-phase. 3) The spheroidization rate constant in eutectic lamellar structures was depended upon annealing temperature and showed the Arrhenius relation. The activation energy for spheroidization of lamellar structure was 365 kJ/mole.

  • phase lubrication can be used as an alterative lubrication method to overcome the demerits of liquid and solid lubrications. In this work, the tribological characteristics of metals are investigated under vapor phase lubrication. It was found that the friction coefficient and wear volume can be controlled efficiently by the amount of vapor phase lubricant delivered to the sliding interface. The friction coefficient could be reduced to about 0.1 under vapor lubrication. Also, depending on the amount of vapor lubrication delivered to the system, the width of the wear track could be varied between 50 to 250 Um. It is shown that vapor phase lubrication mechanism is very effective to control the friction and wear phenomena without the use of excessive oil.
