  • The life span of the porcelain insulator was made to be 30 years, but currently many of the 154kV NGK porcelain insulators using in Korea are found to have passed the production life. Accidents caused by aged mechanical breakdown can lead to disruption of power supply in some areas, large economic losses, and casualties. Therefore, ultrasonic method, which is one of the non - destructive test methods, is applied as a method for evaluating the integrity of porcelain insulators. In this study, the experiment on the interface of cap was conducted and the difference between the energy difference and the attenuation coefficient of the reflected wave was derived according to the interface state of the steel - cement. The results of this study are expected to be used as the basic data of the ultrasonic testing to evaluate the interface condition of the porcelain insulator cap.

  • Ceramic/metal composites have many attractive properties and great potential fur applications. Interfacial fracture properties of different layered composites are important in material integrity. Therefore, evaluation of fracture toughness at interface is required in essence. In this study, the mechanical characteristics for interface of ceramic/metal composites were investigated by indentation test of micro-hardness method. Apparent interfacial toughness of TBC system could be determined with a relation between the applied load and the length of the crack formed at the interface by indentation test.

  • For fitness-for-service analyses of underground natural gas pipelines, engineering assessment methods against possible defects need to be developed. The assessment methods for high pressure pipeline of KOGAS, was developed using the full size pipe burst tests and the finite element analysis. It included the defect assessment methods for a single and multi-corrosion, corrosion in girth welding part, corrosion in seam welding part, the mechanical damage defects as dent and gouge, crack and large plastic deformation of API 5L X65 pipe. In addition, we developed method to assess pipeline integrity by internal and external load to buried pipeline. Evaluation results were compared with other methods currently being applied to the gas pipeline. The program of Windows environment is made for easily using assessment methods. It provides a consistent user interface, so non-professional technician can easily and friendly use the FFS program from company intranet. Several evaluation programs is easily installed using one installer. Each program constitutes a common input interface and the output configuration program, and evaluation result store and can be recalled at any time. The FFS program based on independent evaluation method is used to evaluate the integrity and safety of KOGAS pipeline, and greatly contribute to safe and efficient operation of pipeline. This paper presents experimental, analytical and numerical investigations to develop the FFS methods for KOGAS pipeline, used as high pressure natural gas transmission pipeline within KOREA. Also, it includes the description of the integrated program for FFS methods.

  • In this paper, the ZnO surge arrester performance of power distribution class has been studied under different manufacturing conditions such as housing materials(polymeric, porcelain), interface sealants and one-body molding type. In the recent years, the polymeric ZnO surge arresters have been developed and put into operations based on their excellent characteristics. For polymeric surge arresters, the inner gas volume is extremely small, especially in solid insulation polymeric arresters there are not any gas volume inside arresters in the structure due to polymeric materials are filled into the internal gas volume. The sealing integrity is related to safe operation of surge arrester, the prime failure reason of porcelain housed arresters is moisture ingress. In this paper, the sealing integrity of polymeric surge arresters is investigated with moisture multi-aging test and ingress test. The evaluation techniques are used to inspect the sealing integrity of polymeric arresters, including leakage current, surface temperature, reference voltage and dissipation factor.

  • As the thin film technology has emerged in various fields, adhesion of the film interface becomes an important issue in terms of the longevity and durability of thin film devices. Diverse nondestructive methods utilizing acoustic techniques have been developed to assess the interfacial integrity. As an effective technique based on the ultrasonic wave focusing and the surface acoustic wave(SAW) generation, scanning acoustic microscopy(SAM) has been investigated for adhesion evaluation. Visualization of film microstructures and quantification of adhesion weakness levels by SAW dispersion are the recent achievements of SAM. To overcome the limitations in the theoretical dispersion model only suitable for perfectly elastic and isotropic materials, a new model has been more recently developed in consideration of film anisotropy and viscoelasticity and applied to the adhesion evaluation of polymeric films fabricated on semiconductive wafers.

  • Comparison of shear strength and shear energy of the 48Sn-52In solder bumps reflowed on Cu UBM were made with variations of reflow temperature from $150^{\circ}C$ to $250^{\circ}C$ and reflow time from 1 min to 20 min to establish an evaluation method for the mechanical reliability of solder bumps. Compared to the shear strength, the shear energy of the Sn-52In solder bumps was much more consistent with the solder reaction behavior and the fracture mode at the Sn-52In/Cu interface, indicating that the bump shear energy can be used as an effective tool to evaluate the mechanical integrity of solder/UBM interface.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop an expert system called NPIES for nuclear piping integrity. This paper describes the structure and the development strategy of the NPIES system. The NPIES system consists of 3 part; the data input part, the analysis part and the output part. The data input part consists of the material properties database module and the suer interface module. The analysis part consists of the LEFM, CDFD, J/T, limit load modules and the 12 analysis routines for different cracks and loading conditions are provided respectively. Analysis results are presented to screen, printer and text file in the output part. Several case studies on circumferentially cracked piping were performed to evaluate the accuracy and the usefulness of the code. Maximum piping loads predicted by the NPIES system agreed well with those by the 3-dimensional finite element analysis. In addition, even if the material properties were not fully given, the NPIES system provided reasonable evaluation results with the predicted material properties inferred from the material properties database module.

  • Purpose: A new form of porous polyethylene, characterized by higher porosity and pore interconnectivity, was developed for use as a tissue-integrated implant. This study evaluated the effectiveness of porous polyethylene blocks used as an onlay bone graft in rabbit mandible in terms of tissue reaction, bone ingrowth, fibrovascularization, and graft-bone interfacial integrity. Methods: Twelve New Zealand white rabbits were randomized into 3 treatment groups according to the study period (4, 12, or 24 weeks). Cylindrical specimens measuring 5 mm in diameter and 4.5 mm in thickness were placed directly on the body of the mandible without bone bed decortication, fixed in place with a titanium screw, and covered with a collagen membrane. Histologic and histomorphometric analyses were done using hematoxylin and eosin-stained bone slices. Interfacial shear strength was tested to quantify graft-bone interfacial integrity. Results: The porous polyethylene graft was observed to integrate with the mandibular bone and exhibited tissue-bridge connections. At all postoperative time points, it was noted that the host tissues had grown deep into the pores of the porous polyethylene in the direction from the interface to the center of the graft. Both fibrovascular tissue and bone were found within the pores, but most bone ingrowth was observed at the graft-mandibular bone interface. Bone ingrowth depth and interfacial shear strength were in the range of 2.76-3.89 mm and 1.11-1.43 MPa, respectively. No significant differences among post-implantation time points were found for tissue ingrowth percentage and interfacial shear strength (P>0.05). Conclusions: Within the limits of the study, the present study revealed that the new porous polyethylene did not provoke any adverse systemic reactions. The material promoted fibrovascularization and displayed osteoconductive and osteogenic properties within and outside the contact interface. Stable interfacial integration between the graft and bone also took place.
