  • Some Algol-type interacting binary stars exhibit strange photometric variations that can be phase-dependent and/or secular. This paper discusses the possibility of explaining these observed variations as resulting from an accretion structure eclipsing one or both of the stars. Some previous studies are reviewed and suggestions for future work are made, including the prospective of incorporating data from the Kepler Observatory.

  • The Oguchi theory of antiferromagnetism has been modified for antiferromagnetically interacting spin-pair systems with anisotropic exchange interaction. The parallel and perpendicular susceptibilities $({\chi}_{\parallel}\;and\;{\chi}_{\perp})$ have been expressed as functions of exchange interactions $(J_z\;and\;{\gamma}=J_x/J_z)$, anisotropic molecular field parameters $({\kappa}\;and\;{\kappa}_x)$, $g_z\;and\;g_x$. In contrast to the previous theories, the parallel susceptibilities are not the same as the perpendicular susceptibilities above Neel temperature $T_N$.

  • Background: The mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (MET) receptor can be overexpressed in solid tumors, including small cell lung cancer (SCLC). However, the molecular mechanism regulating MET stability and turnover in SCLC remains undefined. One potential mechanism of MET regulation involves the C-terminus of Hsp70-interacting protein (CHIP), which targets heat shock protein 90-interacting proteins for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. In the present study, we investigated the functional effects of CHIP expression on MET regulation and the control of SCLC cell apoptosis and invasion. Methods: To evaluate the expression of CHIP and c-Met, which is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MET gene (the MET proto-oncogene), we examined the expression pattern of c-Met and CHIP in SCLC cell lines by western blotting. To investigate whether CHIP overexpression reduced cell proliferation and invasive activity in SCLC cell lines, we transfected cells with CHIP and performed a cell viability assay and cellular apoptosis assays. Results: We found an inverse relationship between the expression of CHIP and MET in SCLC cell lines (n=5). CHIP destabilized the endogenous MET receptor in SCLC cell lines, indicating an essential role for CHIP in the regulation of MET degradation. In addition, CHIP inhibited MET-dependent pathways, and invasion, cell growth, and apoptosis were reduced by CHIP overexpression in SCLC cell lines. Conclusion: C HIP is capable of regulating SCLC cell apoptosis and invasion by inhibiting MET-mediated cytoskeletal and cell survival pathways in NCI-H69 cells. CHIP suppresses MET-dependent signaling, and regulates MET-mediated SCLC motility.

  • Important role of chemical interaction in flame extinction was numerically investigated in downstream interaction among lean(rich) and lean(rich) premixed as well as partially premixed $H_2$-air and CO-air flames. The strain rate varied from 30 to $5917s^{-1}$ until interacting flame could not be sustained anymore. Flame stability diagrams mapping lower and upper limit fuel concentrations for flame extinction as a function of strain rate are presented. Highly stretched interacting flames were survived only within two islands in the flame stability map where partially premixed mixture consisted of rich $H_2$-air flame, extremely lean CO-air flame, and a diffusion flame. Further increase in strain rate finally converges to two points. Appreciable amount of hydrogen in the side of lean $H_2$-air flame also oxidized the CO penetrated from CO-air flame, and this reduced flame speed of the $H_2$-air flame, leading to flame extinction. At extremely high strain rates, interacting flames were survived only by a partially premixed flame such that it consisted of a very rich $H_2$-air flame, an extremely lean CO-air flame, and a diffusion flame. In such a situation, both the weaker $H_2$-air and CO-air flames were parasite on the stronger diffusion flame such that it could lead to flame extinction in the situation of weakening the stronger diffusion flame. Particular concerns are focused on important role of chemical interaction in flame extinction was also discussed in detail.

  • Activin is a multifunctional growth and differentiation factor of the growth factor-beta (TGF-${\beta}$) superfamily, which inhibits the proliferation of colon cancer cells. It induces phosphorylation of intracellular signaling molecules (Smads) by interacting with its type I and type II receptors. Previous studies showed that human activin receptor-interacting protein 2 (hARIP2) can reduce activin signaling by interacting with activin type II receptors; however, the activity of hARIP2 in colon cancer has yet to be detailed. In vitro, overexpression of hARIP2 reduced activin-induced transcriptional activity and enhanced cell proliferation and colony formation in human colon cancer HCT8 cells and SW620 cells. Also, hARIP2 promoted colon cancer cell apoptosis, suggesting that a vital role in the initial stage of colon carcinogenesis. In vivo, immunohistochemistry revealed that hARIP2 was expressed more frequently and much more intensely in malignant colon tissues than in controls. These results indicate that hARIP2 is involved in human colon tumorigenesis and could be a predictive maker for colon carcinoma aggressiveness.

  • Ankyrins are a ubiquitously expressed family of intracellular adaptor proteins involved in targeting diverse proteins to specialized membrane domains in both the plasma membrane and the endoplasmic reticulum. Recently, the studies with C-terminus of ankyrins have identified that ankyrin-B is capable of interacting with Hsp40 and sAnkl is capable of interacting with obscurin and titin, but the function of C-terminal domain of ankyrin-G remains unknown. To identify proteins interacting C-terminus of ankyrin-G, we used the C-terminus of ankyrin-G as a bait for a yeast two-hybrid screen of brain cDNA library. Approximately 1.33$\times$l0$^6$ transformants were screened, of which 13 positive clones were obtained as determined by activation of HIS3, ADE2 and MELl reporter genes. Sequence analyses of these 13 plasmids revealed that cDNA inserts of 13 colonies showed highly homologous to 11 genes, including 5 known (i.e., Na$^+$/K$^+$ ATPase $\beta$1, SERBPl, UTF2, cytochrome C oxidase and collagen IV $\alpha$2) and 6 unknown genes. The evaluation of the proteins that emerge from these experiments provides a rational approach to investigate the those proteins significant in interaction with ankyrin-G.

  • Proper targeting of the βPAK-interacting exchange factor (βPIX)/G protein-coupled receptor kinase-interacting target protein (GIT) complex into distinct cellular compartments is essential for its diverse functions including neurite extension and synaptogenesis. However, the mechanism for translocation of this complex is still unknown. In the present study, we reported that the conventional kinesin, called kinesin-1, can transport the βPIX/GIT complex. Additionally, βPIX bind to KIF5A, a neuronal isoform of kinesin-1 heavy chain, but not KIF1 and KIF3. Mapping analysis revealed that the tail of KIF5s and LZ domain of βPIX were the respective binding domains. Silencing KIF5A or the expression of a variety of mutant forms of KIF5A inhibited βPIX targeting the neurite tips in PC12 cells. Furthermore, truncated mutants of βPIX without LZ domain did not interact with KIF5A, and were unable to target the neurite tips in PC12 cells. These results defined kinesin-1 as a motor protein of βPIX, and may provide new insights into βPIX/GIT complex-dependent neuronal pathophysiology.

  • A two-dimensional direct numerical simulation was performed to investigate the flame structure of CH$_4$$N_2$-air counterflow nonpremixed flame interacting with a single vortex. The detailed transport properties and a modified 16-step augmented reduced mechanism based on Miller and Bowman's detailed chemistry were adopted in this simulation. The characteristic vortex and chemical time scales were introduced to quantify and investigate the extinction phenomenon during a flame-vortex interaction. The results showed that fuel- and air-side vortex cause an unsteady extinction. In this case, the flame interacting with a vortex was extinguished at much larger scalar dissipation rate than steady flame. It was also found that the air-side vortex extinguished a flame more rapidly than the fuel-side vortex. Furthermore, it was noted that the degree of unsteady effect experienced by a flame can be investigated by comparing the above two characteristic time scales, and this analysis could give an appropriate reason for the results of the previously reported experiment.
