  • Graph-based document models have good capabilities to reveal inter-dependencies among unstructured text data. Natural language processing (NLP) systems that use such models as an intermediate representation have shown good performance. This paper proposes a novel fuzzy graph-based document model and to demonstrate its effectiveness by applying fuzzy logic tools for text summarization. The proposed system accepts a text document as input and identifies some of its sentence level features, namely sentence position, sentence length, numerical data, thematic word, proper noun, title feature, upper case feature, and sentence similarity. The fuzzy membership value of each feature is computed from the sentences. We also propose a novel algorithm to construct the fuzzy graph as an intermediate representation of the input document. The Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation (ROUGE) metric is used to evaluate the model. The evaluation based on different quality metrics was also performed to verify the effectiveness of the model. The ANOVA test confirms the hypothesis that the proposed model improves the summarizer performance by 10% when compared with the state-of-the-art summarizers employing alternate intermediate representations for the input text.

  • This study aims to provide research fields and topics to complement, extend and develop the geographical toponymy in Korea, largely based on a summary of topics discussed in the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN). The Korean toponymic research has generally focused on revealing human, social and physical characteristics of the region by investigating the creation and change of the geographical names, with the perspective of creator and owner of the toponyms. Toponymic researches in the UNGEGN, in comparison, have put forward with the mission of standardization of geographical names and with specific emphasis on the users of toponyms. The topics include diverse forms of toponyms by user groups, roles of language groups, preservation of toponyms with specific value, etc. As research directions for an establishment of extended geographical toponymy accommodating discussions in the UNGEGN, further research topics are suggested; use of exonyms and endonyms in the Korean language, the nature of geographical feature and perception over it, writing systems for inter-language communication, and geographical names as intagible cultural heritage.

  • Recognition of parallel structure at early stage of sentence parsing can reduce the complexity of parsing. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised language-independent probabilistic model for recongition of parallel noun structures. The proposed model is based on the idea of swapping constituents, which replies the properties of symmetry (two or more identical constituents are repeated) and of reversibility (the order of constituents is inter-changeable) in parallel structures. The non-symmetric patterns that cannot be captured by the general symmetry rule are resolved additionally by the modifier information. In particular this paper shows how the proposed model is applied to recognize Korean parallel noun phrases connected by "wa/kwa" particle. Our model is compared with other models including supervised models and performs better on recongition of parallel noun phrases.

  • Until now, a variety of the standard and research activities are progressed in the business process management. However, since the common standard of the collaboration process language has not been determined, the research activities could not be well-systemized. We would present the guide-line to select and use the collaboration process language straightly through comparing different collaboration process languages (BPEL4WS, BPML, WSCI, WS-CDL, BPSS, etc). In this regard, we define the implicit and the explicit collaboration as the collaboration method in advance and present the result acquired according to compare and analyze the features of the collaboration process languages. First, the necessary elements the collaboration process languages have are extracted through the framework of the inter-organizational workflow proposed by Bernauer and the collaboration process modeling procedure(CPMP). Second, we analyze the properties of the collaboration process language based the essential elements. Finally, we show the complete example that the collaboration business process really reflects the characteristics of the collaboration business process languages

  • This study was to investigate for comparison between single rating and average ratings from multiple presentations of the same stimulus for measuring the voice quality of dysphonia using 7-point equal-appearing interval (EAI) rating scale. Overall severity of voice quality for 46 /a/ vowel stimuli (23 stimuli from dysphonia, 23 stimuli from control) was rated by 3 experienced speech-language pathologists (averaged 19 years; range = 7 to 40 years). For average ratings, each stimulus was rated five times in random order and averaged from two to five times. Although higher inter-rater reliability was found in average ratings than in single rating, there were no significant differences in rating scores between single and multiple average ratings judged by experienced listeners, suggesting that auditory perceptual ratings judged by well-trained listeners have relatively good agreement with the same stimulus across the judgment. Larger variations in perceptual ratings were observed for moderate voices than for mild or severe voices, even in the average ratings.

  • It was investigated on the logical inter-relationship with plastic thinking systems in interior space constitution. Followings were produced the conclusion of study from the plastic thinking. First of all plastic thinking could be interpreted as the stage-oriented process from various approaching by intuitional, experimental techniques through the expansion of thinking capability with linguistic activities. And also interior space constitution could be extracted from the plastic language relating with design concept, could be extracted the design element by processing on the formation process based on material's physical properties. Next, space perception and constitution should be followed the massive perception between empty and full space based on the interrelationship. Additionally the constitution of interior space could be established through axis, integrated with detail functions. Interior space constitution could be accomplished on the study of material based on the characteristics of material, planned to coincide with the space's characteristics in selection for texture.

  • This study explored the discrimination of synthesized English vowel pairs by twenty-seven American and Korean, male and female listeners. The average formant values of nine monophthongs produced by ten American English male speakers were employed to synthesize the vowels. Then, subjects were instructed explicitly to respond to AX discrimination tasks in which the standard vowel was followed by another one with the increment or decrement of the original formant values. The highest and lowest formant values of the same vowel quality were collected and compared to examine patterns of vowel discrimination. Results showed that the American and Korean groups discriminated the vowel pairs almost identically and their center formant frequency values of the high and low boundary fell almost exactly on those of the standards. In addition, the acceptable range of the same vowel quality was similar among the language and gender groups. The acceptable thresholds of each vowel formed oval to maintain perceptual contrast from adjacent vowels. The results suggested that nonnative speakers with high English proficiency could match native speakers' performance in discriminating vowel pairs with a shorter inter-stimulus interval. Pedagogical implications of those findings are discussed.

  • Stress effects upon Korean vowels were investigated with reference to rhythm. We measured three acoustic correlates (Duration: VOT, Vowel Duration; F0; Intensity) of stress from the seven pairs of stressed vs. unstressed Korean vowels /i, ${\varepsilon}(e)$, a, o, u, i, e/. The results of the experiment revealed that stress gave only inconsistent and weak effects on duration, which supports that Korean is not a stress-timed language as far as strong stress effects on duration are still considered crucial in stress-timing. On the other hand, Korean stressed vowels were most characterized with higher F0 and next with stronger intensity. But speakers generally showed tactics to reversely use F0 and intensity in stressing an utterance rather than proportionately strengthening both of the two acoustic correlates of stress. There was found great inter-speaker variability especially in the variations of duration.

  • In South Korea, some interethnic families result from prearranged marriages where 1 spouse is an immigrant. In this study, traits of children in families of interethnic immigrant marriages were studied by individual interviews of ten kindergarten teachers responsible for them and 8 observations of their preschool classes. Subjects were 21(13 male, 8 female) 3- to 5-year-old children. Results showed the diverse traits of these children : they adapted to the environment by changing and getting along, but some of them exhibited problematic behavior such as delayed language development, confused identity, and aggression. The attitude of their peers included passive reaction, discord and receptivity regarding their difference. The attitude of the teachers was a sense of responsibility and worry.
