  • Objectives: To compare the effects of Eastern-Western integrative medical care (EWIM) and Western single rehabilitation therapy (WSRT) on the functional recovery of stroke patients. Methods: Seventy-six stroke patients were recruited retrospectively. The participants were divided into two groups: EWIM and WSRT. Data on age, sex, stroke-related risk factors, stroke type, neurological deficits according to the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), elapsed time to the initiation of rehabilitation, duration from the onset to follow up, initial functional status, and function after therapy for 3 mon were obtained from a review of the patients’ medical records. Between-group differences in functional outcomes were analyzed before and after treatment using the functional ambulation category (FAC), Fugl-Meyer assessment (FMA), modified Barthel Index-Korean version (K-MBI), and Euro-Quality of Life-5 Dimension (EQ-5D).Results: At 3-mon poststroke, all the functional outcome measures had improved in both groups (P<0.05). However, the improvements were greater in the EWIM group, and the improvement was statistically significant in the K-MBI (P=0.048) and EQ-5D (P=0.042).Conclusions: With respect to activities of daily living and health-related quality of life, EWIM is a more effective stroke therapy than WSRT.

  • This study was undertaken to evaluate safety and antitumor activity of Nexia, a processed extract of Rhus verniciflua STOKES by heating according to Korean patent 0504160 through toxicology, cancer research and clinical application. Nexia did not exhibit any toxicological symptoms through 13 week continuous treatment, dosage accumulation study and anaphylaxis response. The lifespan of four patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia under complete remission were 110, 83, 97, and 86 months after treatment of Nexia, respectively. These data suggest that Nexia, a processed extract by removing allergen from Rhus verniciflua STOKES, may have safety and antitumor activity and also still need continuous study on its mechanism and clinical trial.

  • Papillary thyroid carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid malignancy. It has better prognosis and rarer incidence of distant metastasis than other types of thyroid malignancy. However, once distant metastasis happens, its result will be bad. They mostly spread to the lungs and bones. and rarely to the brain. We report a patient with a papillary thyroid carcinoma metastasis to the lymph nodes. the ribs. the brain, and the lungs. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy, radioiodine ablation, rib partial resection, and lung wedge resection. However, upon progress of metastasis. the patient insisted on being treated with traditional Korean medical treatment using allergen-removed Rhus Verniciflua Stokes (A-RVS) instead of the conventional treatment including chemotherapy. The size of the tumor partly decreased, and the patient showed no side effects. This case report brings forth the importance of a thorough study in papillary thyroid carcinomas and their metastasis from the traditional Korean medical point of view, along with the long-term effect of allergen-removed Rhus Verniciflua Stokes (A-RVS).

  • This report is aimed to investigate the effect of Integrative Medicine Therapy (IMT) in treating metastasized ovary and endometrial cancer. A 51-year-old woman who was diagnosed double primary ovarian and endometrial cancer in 2009. The patient was treated with Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy (LAVH), Bilateral Salpingo Oophorectomy (BSO) Pelvic Lymph Node Dissection (PLND), adjuvant chemotherapy till Sep. in 2013. But metastases to Rt. External Iliac artery, Aortocaval area Lymph Nodes, Liver(caudate lobe), Rt. Buttock subcutaneous area, Lt. Gastric Area Lymph Nodes were found. Finally, the patient decided to be treated by IMT including Abnoba Viscum, Vitamin C, herbal medication and pharmacopuncture combined with chemotherapy. The efficacy was evaluated with Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) and Abdomen Computed Tomography (CT). The metastatic tumor in liver was disappeared and Rt. external iliac artery, aortocaval area Lymph Nodes, Rt. buttock subcutaneous area were also decreased after 6 months treatment. These results suggest that IMT may have a potential role for metastatic cancer.

  • This review aimed to compare the effectiveness of Korean medicine (KM) with Korean-Western integrative medicine (KWIM) at treating Bell's palsy. A literature search of several databases for relevant randomized controlled trials was performed. Six studies that compared KM with KWIM to treat Bell's palsy were included in this review. Acupuncture and steroids were the most commonly used treatments in KWIM. A comparison of the effectiveness of KW with KWIM did not produce consistent results. Both KM and KWIM were useful intreating Bell's palsy. KWIM was more effective than KM when the Western medicine was a steroid and was given in the early stages of treatment. However, these findings are limited due to the low quality and number of included studies. KM and KWIM are both effective in Bell's palsy, and KWIM is more effective than KM. However, more high-quality randomized controlled trials are required.

  • Objectives : It is important to develop a new Chuna manual therapy as a representative of Chuna manual therapy technique at the time of KSCMM's (Korean Society of Chuna manual medicine) joining a $F{\acute{e}}d{\acute{e}}ration$ Internationale de $M{\acute{e}}decine$ Manuelle (FIMM). Therefore, Sunu manual therapy (SMT) will be introduced as a purely new Chuna manual therapy. Main subject : Sunu manual therapy (SMT) was discovered about two decade ago by a Korean Medicine doctor who wanted to develop a new manual therapy to treat a internal disease. It is very important to make the best use of four powers such as a compression force, a torsion force, a bending force, a tension force using a resonance principle and to experience a feeling of spine axis. SMT is different from Chiropractic technique and Osteopathy technique, in that SMT could treat so many disease using only one technique, but other manual therapy could utilize so many technique to treat only one disease. Discussion : Because SMT utilize a power of a moving in silience, it will take several years to totally master a SMT which will make a patient and a doctor experience a feeling of spine axis. As a feeling of spine axis is deeper, a nerve could be excited and treated by a SMT. Also as a feeling of spine axis is shallower, a muscle could be excied and treated by a SMT. Conclusions : SMT could be classed as a craniosacral chuna therapy or visceral chuna therapy to treat a internal disease considering SMT's action and purpose.
