  • The analysis of rapid flow transients in Reactor Coolant Pumps (RCP) is essential for a reactor safety study. An accurate and precise analysis of the RCP coastdown is necessary for the reactor design. The coastdown of RCP affects the coolant temperature and the colloidal crud in the primary coolant. A realistic and kinetic model has been used to investigate the behavior of activated colloidal crud in the primary coolant and steam generator that solves the pump speed analytically. The analytic solution of the non-dimensional flow rate has been determined by the energy ratio β. The kinetic energy of the coolant fluid and the kinetic energy stored in the rotating parts of a pump are two essential parameters in the form of β. Under normal operation, the pump's speed and moment of inertia are constant. However, in a coastdown situation, kinetic damping in the interval has been implemented. A dynamic model ACCP-SMART has been developed for System Integrated Modular and Advanced Reactor (SMART) to investigate the corrosion due to activated colloidal crud. The Fickian diffusion model has been implemented as the reference corrosion model for the constituent component of the primary loop of the SMART reactor. The activated colloidal crud activity in the primary coolant and steam generator of the SMART reactor has been studied for different equilibrium corrosion rates, linear increase in corrosion rate, and dynamic RCP coastdown situation energy ratio b. The coolant specific activity of SMART reactor equilibrium corrosion (4.0 mg s-1) has been found 9.63×10-3 µCi cm-3, 3.53×10-3 µC cm-3, 2.39×10-2 µC cm-3, 8.10×10-3 µC cm-3, 6.77× 10-3 µC cm-3, 4.95×10-4 µC cm-3, 1.19×10-3 µC cm-3, and 7.87×10-4 µC cm-3 for 24Na, 54Mn, 56Mn, 59Fe, 58Co, 60Co, 99Mo, and 51Cr which are 14.95%, 5.48%, 37.08%, 12.57%, 10.51%, 0.77%, 18.50%, and 0.12% respectively. For linear and exponential coastdown with a constant corrosion rate, the total coolant and steam generator activity approaches a higher saturation value than the normal values. The coolant and steam generator activity changes considerably with kinetic corrosion rate, equilibrium corrosion, growth of corrosion rate (ΔC/Δt), and RCP coastdown situations. The effect of the RCP coastdown on the specific activity of the steam generators is smeared by linearly rising corrosion rates, equilibrium corrosion, and rapid coasting down of the RCP. However, the time taken to reach the saturation activity is also influenced by the slope of corrosion rate, coastdown situation, equilibrium corrosion rate, and energy ratio β.

  • In this paper, we present modeling and characterization of CNT-based TSVs to be used in high-frequency RF applications. We have developed an integrated model of CNT-based TSVs by incorporating the quantum confinement effects of CNTs with the kinetic inductance phenomenon at high frequencies. Substrate parasitics have been appropriately modeled as a monolithic microwave capacitor with the resonant line technique using a two-polynomial equation. Different parametric variations in the model have been outlined as case studies. Furthermore, electrical performance and signal integrity analysis on different cases have been used to determine the optimized configuration for CNT-based TSVs for high frequency RF applications.

  • This paper focuses on a systematic configuration of steam reforming fuel processor, particularly designed for small and medium sized hydrogen production application. In a typical integration of the fuel processor, there exist significant temperature gradients over the entire system which has negative effect on both catalyst life-time and system performance. Also, the volumetric inefficiency should be avoided to obtain the possible compactness for the commercial purpose. In the present work, the computational analysis will be performed to gain the fundamental insight on the transport phenomena and chemical reactions in the reformer consisting of preheating, steam reforming (SR), and water gas shift (WGS) reaction beds in the flow direction. Also, the fuel processing system includes a top-fired burner providing necessary thermal energy for endothermic catalytic reactor. A fully two-dimensional numerical modeling for a integrated fuel processing system is introduced for in-depth analysis of the heat and mass transport phenomena based on surface kinetics and catalytic process. In the model, water gas shift reaction and decomposition reaction were assumed to be at equilibrium. A kinetic model was developed and then computational results were compared with the experimental data available in the literature. Finally, the case study was done by considering the key parameters, i.e. steam to carbon (S/C) ratio and temperature. The computer-aided models developed in this study can be greatly utilized for the design of advanced fast-paced compact fuel processors research.

  • Electrochemical oxidation of ethanol at nickel electrodes has been studied in 1 M KOH solution containing 0.20M ethanol using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Equivalent circuits have been worked out by simulating the impedance data, and the results were used to model the oxidation of ethanol as well as the passivation of the electrode. The maximum rate of oxidation of $Ni(OH)_2$ to NiOOH was observed at about 0.37V vs. Ag/AgCl reference electrode, while the maximum rate of ethanol oxidation at the Ni electrode was observed at about 0.42V, The charge-transfer resistance for oxidation of the electrode itself became smaller in the presence of ethanol than in its absence. These results suggest that the $\beta-Ni(OH)_2/\beta-NiOOH$ redox couple is acting as an effective electron transfer mediator far ethanol oxidation. The kinetic parameters also were obtained by the experimental and simulated results.

  • Hydraulic modeling is widely used to simulate wastewater flow. The simulated models are used to prevent flood and many other problems associated with wastewater flow in planning or rehabilitating sewer systems. In this study, MAKESW (An engineer, South Korea), MOUSE (DHI, Denmark), and SWMM (XPSoftware, USA) are used to for hydraulic modeling of wastewater in C-city, South Korea and E-city, Iraq. These modeling tools produced different results. SWMM comparably overpredicted runoff and peak flow. In using SWMM, use of accurate data with a high confidential level, detail examination over the target basin surface, and the careful selection of a runoff model, which describes Korea's unique hydraulic characteristics are recommended. Modification of existing models through the optimization of variables cannot be achieved at this moment. Setting up an integrated modeling environment is considered to be essential to utilize modeling and further apply the results for various projects. Standardization of GIS database, the criteria for and the scope of model application, and database management systems need to be prepared to expand modeling application.

  • This study explored the feasibility of calcium-rich food waste, Mactra veneriformis shells (MVS), as an adsorbent for phosphate removal, and its removal efficiency was enhanced by the thermal activation process. The CaCO3 in MVS was converted to CaO by thermal activation (>800 ℃), which is more favorable for adsorbing phosphate. Thermal activation did not noticeably influence the specific surface area of MVS. The MVS thermally activated at 800 ℃ (MVS-800), showed the highest phosphate adsorption capacity, was used for further adsorption experiments, including kinetics, equilibrium isotherms, and thermodynamic adsorption. The effects of environmental factors, including pH, competing anions, and adsorbent dosage, were also studied. Phosphate adsorption by MVS-800 reached equilibrium within 48h, and the kinetic adsorption data were well explained by the pseudo-first-order model. The Langmuir model was a better fit for phosphate adsorption by MVS-800 than the Freundlich model, and the maximum adsorption capacity of MVS-800 obtained via the Langmuir model was 188.86 mg/g. Phosphate adsorption is an endothermic and involuntary process. As the pH increased, the phosphate adsorption decreased, and a sharp decrease was observed between pH 7 and 9. The presence of anions had a negative impact on phosphate removal, and their impact followed the decreasing order CO32- > SO42- > NO3- > Cl-. The increase in adsorbent dosage increased phosphate removal percentage, and 6.67 g/L of MVS-800 dose achieved 99.9% of phosphate removal. It can be concluded that the thermally treated MVS-800 can be used as an effective adsorbent for removing phosphate.

  • The purpose of this study was to film up computerized analyses for both kinematic posture(film analysis) and muscle dynamics (EMG) during a weight-lifting motion. (Snatch, Clean and Jerk) Using a motor drive camera (3.5 frames/sec) and a Location Analyzer, motion tracks of 13 landmarks, which were attached to the major joints, during the motion were converted into digital values. At the same time, EMG amplitudes from 11 major muscle groups were recorded. Recorded data were processed via analog/hybrid computer (ADAC 480) and digital computer (PDP 11/44). Landmark locations and EMG amplitude were integrated by a computerized routine. Computer output included graphic reproductions on sepuential dislocations of body segments, center of gravity of body segments and the associated changes on EMG amplitude such as % EMG's of major muscle group during a weight lifting motion. The results strongly suggest that the computerized motion-EMG integration can provide a further working knowledge in selection and in training of workers and athletes. Suggestions for a further study include additional device for velocity measurement, expansion of the link model for biomechanical analysis and other implementations necessary for athletic application.

  • According to structure formation simulations, weak shocks with typical Mach number, M<3, are expected to form in merging galaxy clusters. The presence of such shocks has been indicated by X-ray and radio observations of many merging clusters. In particular, diffuse radio sources known as radio relics could be explained by synchrotron-emitting electrons accelerated via diffusive shock acceleration (Fermi I) at quasi-perpendicular shocks. Here we also consider possible roles of stochastic acceleration (Fermi II) by compressive MHD turbulence downstream of the shock. Then we explore a puzzling discrepancy that for some radio relics, the shock Mach number inferred from the radio spectral index is substantially larger than that estimated from X-ray observations. This problem could be understood, if shock surfaces associated with radio relics consist of multiple shocks with different strengths. In that case, X-ray observations tend to pick up the part of shocks with lower Mach numbers and higher kinetic energy flux, while radio emissions come preferentially from the part of shocks with higher Mach numbers and higher cosmic ray (CR) production. We also show that the Fermi I reacceleration model with preexisting fossil electrons supplemented by Fermi II acceleration due to postshock turbulence could reproduce observed profiles of radio flux densities and integrated radio spectra of two giant radio relics. This study demonstrates the CR electrons can be accelerated at collisionless shocks in galaxy clusters just like supernova remnant shock in the interstellar medium and interplanetary shocks in the solar wind.
