Future powertrain technologies will be developed focused on applications of eco-friendly technology for internal combustion engine, electric vehicle and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle. But it is expected that these cutting edge technologies will not be applied immediately due to lack of infrastructure, technical and economical reasons. Therefore, numerous developments of internal combustion engine will be carried out for the time being. There have been many turbo engine developments undergoing to maximize the engine performance using turbo charger system in accordance with global trend-green technology and downsizing of engine which coincides with HMC's future development strategy. This study reviews the development process and result of plastic intake manifold module which is firstly developed for turbo engine. CAE simulation and experiments were implanted to evaluate design validity.
To evaluate carbon emission in water treatment processes, LCA (life cycle assessment) was applied to 8 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) from intake to supply of tap water. Investigation of 8 WTPs revealed that average carbon emission for 1 $m^3$ of tap water was 221 g. Major carbon emission sources in water supply system were intake and supply processes. Meanwhile, mixing process was the main carbon emission source in unit water treatment processes. Carbon emission was proportional to the turbidity and COD of raw water. Intake of better raw water and minimization of energy consumption in unit processes are needed to reduce carbon emission in the WTPs. In addition, comparison of carbon emission among WTPs can be used as a parameter for optimization of operation and maintenance of water treatment processes.

This paper is the second of 2 companion papers which investigate in-cylinder swirl generation characteristics in helical port engine with wide valve angle. Two wide valve-angle engines, which are same ones and have slightly different rig swirl number, were used to compare the characteristics of cylinder-flow. One intake port is deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field during intake stroke. The results show that the intake flow component passing through valve area near the cylinder wall is not negligible in helical port engine with wide valve angle contrary to conventional one. The effect of this velocity component on in-cylinder increases as the swirl ratio rises and compression process progresses. Consequently, this component destroys in-cylinder swirl flow completely during compression resulting in no actual swirl at the end stage of compression.
Objectives: Since 1998, the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) has been conducted in order to investigate the health and nutritional status of Koreans. The food intake data of individuals in the KNHANES has also been utilized as source dataset for risk assessment of chemicals via food. To improve the reliability of intake estimation and prevent missing data for less-responded foods, the structure of integrated long-standing datasets is significant. However, it is difficult to merge multi-year survey datasets due to ineffective cleaning processes for handling extensive numbers of codes for each food item along with changes in dietary habits over time. Therefore, this study aims at 1) cleaning the process of abnormal data 2) generation of integrated long-standing raw data, and 3) contributing to the production of consistent dietary exposure factors. Methods: Codebooks, the guideline book, and raw intake data from KNHANES V and VI were used for analysis. The violation of the primary key constraint and the $1^{st}-3rd$ normal form in relational database theory were tested for the codebook and the structure of the raw data, respectively. Afterwards, the cleaning process was executed for the raw data by using these integrated codes. Results: Duplication of key records and abnormality in table structures were observed. However, after adjusting according to the suggested method above, the codes were corrected and integrated codes were newly created. Finally, we were able to clean the raw data provided by respondents to the KNHANES survey. Conclusion: The results of this study will contribute to the integration of the multi-year datasets and help improve the data production system by clarifying, testing, and verifying the primary key, integrity of the code, and primitive data structure according to the database normalization theory in the national health data.

To satisfy the needs on fuel economy and engine performance, continuous variable valve lift systems are applying to engines. In the CVVL system, fuel economy can be improved by reducing pumping loss during the induction process, and engine performance can be also improved by controlling volumetric efficiency and the residual gas fraction. Because the residual gas fraction directly affects volumetric efficiency, engine performance, combustion efficiency and emissions in SI engines, controlling residual gas fraction is one of the important things in engine development process. This analysis investigates the residual gas fraction and volumetric efficiency with changes of intake valve lifts and intake valve timings. In this study, unsteady state solutions were solved during exhaust and induction processes. Results show variation of the residual gas fraction and volumetric efficiency by changing intake valve timing and lift. Decreasing intake valve lift leads to increase the residual gas fraction and to decrease volumetric efficiency.

HCCI (Homogeneous Charged Compression Ignition) hydrogen engine has relatively narrower operation range caused by backfire occurrence due to the rapid pressure rising by using higher compression ratio and significant reaction velocity. In this study, to grasp of backfire process and characteristic in the HCCI research hydrogen engine, in-cylinder pressure, intake pressure and backfire limit range are analyzed with compression ratio and intake valve open timing, experimentally. As the result, it is observed that knock is occurred just before backfire occurrence in HCCI hydrogen engine but not spark igntion type, this phenomenon is always the same for the above variables. Also backfire limit range are expanded up to 50% for the more retarding intake valve open timing in this operating conditions.

While variable valve actuation or variable valve lift (VVL) is used increasingly in spark ignition (SI) engines to improve the volumetric efficiency or to reduce the pumping losses, it is necessary to understand the impact of variable valve lift and timing on the in-cylinder gas motions and mixing processes. In this paper, characteristics of the in-cylinder flow and fuel distribution for various valve lifts (4, 6, 8, 10 mm) were simulated in a GDI engine. It is expected that the investigation will be helpful in understanding and improving GDI combustion when a VVL system is used. The CFD results showed that a increased valve lift could significantly enhance the mixture and in-cylinder tumble motion because of the accelerated air flow. Also, it can be found that the fuel distribution is more affected by earlier injection (during intake process) than that of later injection (end of compression). These may contribute to an improvement in the air-fuel mixing but also to an optimization of intake and exhaust system.

The engine combustion is one of the most important processes affecting performance and emissions. One effective way to improve the engine combustion is to control the motion of the charge inside a cylinder by means of optimum induction system design, because the flame speed is mainly determined by the turbulence at compression(TDC) process in S.I. engine. It is believed that the tumble and swirl motion generated during intake stroke breaks down into small-scale turbulence in the compression stroke of the cycle. However, the exact nature of this relationship is not well known. This paper describes the tumble flow measurements inside the cylinder of a 4-valve S.I. engine using laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) under motoring(non-firing) conditions. This is conducted on an optically assesed single cylinder research engine under motored conditions at an engine speed of 1000rpm. Three different cylinder head intake port configurations are studied to develop a better understanding the tumble flow generation, development, and breakdown mechanisms.

To effectively meet current regulations on the exhaust emissions of diesel engine required to control the deterioration of air pollution in the whole world, this study is to investigate the effects of water induction through the air intake system on the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in IDI diesel engine. A method fur supplying water through the air intake system to reduce the exhaust emissions has been considered with other methods such as water introduction in the form of water-in-fuel emulsion or water injection directly into the combustion chamber, but it has not been studied about the effects of water on the combustion concepts and the characteristics of exhaust emissions in detail until now. In this study, the formation of NOx was significantly suppressed by decreasing the gas peak temperature during the initial combustion process because the water play a role as a heat sink during evaporating in the combustion chamber, but the smoke was slightly increased by increasing water amount.

In order to recognize thermal efficiency and power improvement in case that diesel cycle is turned into diesel-atkinson cycle, the fuel-air diesel-atkinson cycle considered gas exchange process is analyzed non-dimensionally and thermodynamically. As a result, in case of diesel-atkinson cycle, as expansion ratio is increased, thermal efficiency and mean effective pressure is increased and it has maximum value at Rec=1. When diesel cycle is turned into diesel-atkinson cycle by late intake valve closing timing, thermal efficiency and power is decreased because of the decline of effective compression ratio and intake airflow, but it could be compensated by increase of compression ratio or super-charged. In case compression ratio is compensated, Rec appears 1 around 100$^{\circ}$ ABDC, and it is expected that thermal efficiency is enhanced by 14.3% compared with conventional diesel cycle. In case compression ratio and intake airflow are compensated simultaneously, super-charged pressure is demanded 2.06bar at Rec=1 and it is more efficient when only compression ratio is compensated in the view point of thermal efficiency.
