Changing Students' Conceptions of Mathematics through the Introduction of Variation

  • Some 400 Secondary One (i.e. seventh-grade) students from 10 schools were provided with non-routine mathematical problems in their normal mathematics classes as exercises for one academic year. Their attitudes toward mathematics, their conceptions of mathematics and their problem-solving performance were measured both in the beginning and at the end of the year. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the introduction of an appropriate dose of non-routine problems would generate some effects on the students' conceptions of mathematics. A medium dose of non-routine problems (as reported by the teachers) would result in a change of the students' conception of mathematics to perceiving mathematics as less of "a subject of calculables." On the other hand, a high dose would lead students to perceive mathematics as more useful and more as a discipline involving thinking. However, with a low dose of non-routine problems, students found mathematics more "friendly" (free from fear). It is therefore proposed that the use of non-routine mathematical problems to an appropriate extent can induce changes in students' "lived space" of mathematics learning and broaden their conceptions of mathematics and mathematics learning.

The Dilemma of Language in Education Policies in Ghana and Tanzania

  • This paper examines language policies of Ghana and Tanzania (former British Colonies) since independence. The view that language use in education is a problem for African countries is evident in the ever changing language in education policies in many African countries. Because of the inevitable multilingual situation in many African countries, there are unavoidable challenges in their quest to adopt a language policy that works for the entire country since it is not practical to adopt all the languages spoken in the country as Media of Instruction. Ghana is not immune to this challenge and has fallen victim to this tendency to change the language in education policy from time to time in an attempt to adopt a satisfactory policy which would yield the intended results. Tanzania, however, is one of the few African countries that have found a sustainable language in education policy since independence. Nonetheless, it has its fair share of challenges as a consequence of the perceived competition between Kiswahili and English as official languages. The paper discusses the challenges that both Ghana and Tanzania face against the background of colonization. The paper also offers a discussion on possible future perspectives for the two countries.

협동기술 훈련이 초등학생의 과학 학습에 미치는 효과 (The Effect of Cooperative Skill Training on Elementary School Students생 Learning in Science)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cooperative skill training on elementary school students' science achievement and self-esteem. Three different groups were used in this study. For the two treatment groups, cooperative loaming strategies were used and the one control group, traditional instruction was used. One of the treatment group was trained cooperative skills before the instruction. A total of 120 children sampled from 5th graders of a elementary school. All groups were taught about the change of the weather and structure of the plants. After the instruction a researcher made science achievement test and questionnaire of self-esteem were administered. The data analysis consisted of a 3(instructional strategies)×3(learning ability level) ANCOVA on the score of the achievement and self-esteem. The ANCOVA results revealed that there were significant main effect in the scores of achievement and also significant interaction effect between the instructional strategies and learning ability. The performance of high-level students in two treatment groups was higher than that of students in the control group, but the performance of high-level students with cooperative skill training was not higher than that of students without cooperative skill training. However, the performance of medium and low-level students with cooperative skill training was higher than that of students without cooperative skill training. The significant main effect was also found in the self-esteem but there were no significant interactions between the instructional strategies and learning ability. The academic self and social self of students with cooperative skill training was higher than that of students without cooperative skill training.

문제 해결 전략에서 협동학습의 효과 (Instructional Effect of Cooperative Learning in Problem Solving Strategy)

  • 본 연구에서는 분자 수준의 그림을 강조하고 4단계 문제 해결 전략을 제시하는 수업에서 협동학습의 효과를 조사하였다. 고등학교 세 학급(130명)을 선정하여 개별적으로 전략을 사용하는 집단(St: Strategy), 협동학습 환경에서 전략을 사용하는 집단(St-Co: Strategy-Cooperative learning), 그리고 통제 집단으로 무선 배치하였다. 수업 처치 후 학생들의 객관식 문제 해결력, 전략 수행 능력, 수업 참여도에 대한 인식을 비교하였고, 학생들이 선호하는 수업 유형도 조사하였다. 객관식 문제 해결력에서는 집단간에 유의미한 차이가 없었으나, 전략 수행 능력에서는 수업 처치와 사전 성취 수준 사이의 상호작용 효과가 유의미하였다. 단순 효과를 분석한 결과, St 집단의 중위 수준 학생들이 St-Co 집단보다 전략을 더 잘 수행한 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 수업 참여도에 대한 인식 검사에서는 St 집단의 점수가 통제 집단보다 유의미하게 낮았고, 학생들이 가장 선호하는 수업도 St-Co인 것으로 조사되었다.

'날씨와 기후' 단원에서 고등학생들의 인지양식 및 수업방법에 따른 학업파지 효과 (An Effect of Academic Retention Concerned with High School Students' Cognitive Styles and Teaching Methods in 'The Weather and Climate' Unit)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 '날씨와 기후' 단원에 대한 수업 후, 수업방법(설명식 수업과 발견식 수업)과 학습자의 인지양식에 따른 학업파지 효과를 조사하는 것이다. 연구대상은 광주에 있는 남자고등학교의 1학년 185명과 남여공학고등학교의 1학년 189명을 대상으로 하였다. 연구대상 학생들 중 남자고등학교의 92명과 남여공학고등학교의 95명을 설명식수업집단으로, 그리고 남자고등학교의 93명과 남여공학고등학교의 94명을 발견식 수업집단으로 선정하였다. 모든 학생들은 그들의 인지양식에 따라 장 독립적 학습자, 중간적 학습자, 장 의존적 학습자로 분류되었다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 지구과학 학습내용의 수업 3주일 후 학업파지검사에서 발견식 수업방법이 설명식 수업방법에 비해 이해와 적용영역에서 더 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 지식영역에 있어서는 유의미한 차이가 없었다. 둘째, 학업파지검사에서 장 독립적 인지양식의 학습자들이 장 의존적 인지양식의 학습자들에 비해 이해와 적용영역에서 더 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 학업파지검사에서 수업방법과 학습자의 인지양식 간의 상호연관성에 대한 유의미한 차이는 없었다.

개인차를 고려한 웹 기반 코스웨어 개발 (A Development of a Web-based Instruction Prototype System Considering Individual Differences)

  • 웹 기반 코스웨어들이 많이 개발되고 있다. 그러나, 기존에 개발된 대부분 웹 기반 코스웨어들은 학습자들에게 항상 같은 교수 방법을 제공하므로 학습자들의 다양한 요구를 수용하는데 부족한 면이 있다. 학습자들이 개별적으로 가장 적합한 교수 방법으로 학습한다면 학습 효율을 높일 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 학습자의 개인차를 고려하면서 다양한 학습 방법을 제공하고, 교수 시스템은 교수 방법 중에서도 학습자에게 효율성이 높다고 생각되는 교수 방법을 학습자에게 추천하도록 하고, 학습자는 선호하는 방법을 선택하여 학습하도록 하였다. 평가모듈은 개개인의 응답에 대하여 개별적인 피드백을 주었다. 그리고 이 프로토타입 시스템을 대학1학년을 대상으로 적용하여 본 시스템의 교육적 효과를 입증하였다.

  • 우리나라 사교육의 발달과 최근 중소규모의 학원의 수가 기하급수적으로 증가함에 따라 학원의 형편에 알맞게 학원관리를 효율적으로 운영할 수 있는 학원경영관리 시스템을 구축하고 있다. 또한 모바일 환경에서의 학원들간의 경쟁 및 차별화된 학습지도와 체계적이고 효율적으로 관리하기 위한 학원관리 시스템의 필요성이 증대되었다. 본 연구에서는 모바일 환경에서의 학생들의 출결관리와 학부모 학생 학원 강사간의 커뮤니케이션을 지원하여 중소규모 학원의 시간적, 경제적 비용을 해결 할 수 있는 모바일 학원관리 프로토타입 앱을 개발하였다.

사교육서비스 분야에서의 BSC 모델 개발 및 전략실행방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on BSC development and Strategy execution plan for Private education service field)

  • Purpose: This study aims to overcome the problem of private education market environment which is polarized into commercialized large private education institutions and small and medium sized private education institutions in a poor business environment, and develop systematic performance measurement model applicable for small and medium sized private education institutions. Methods: To develop the BSC which measures financial and non-financial indicator in a balanced manner and introduce the BSC into private education institutions that contain conflicting goals "EDUCATION" and "PROFIT". In particular, Utilizing the methodology of AHP, the priority of strategies and execution assignments are derived. Results: BSC model was developed and introduced by cooperating with executives of the private education institution. Moreover, the study permits to achieve the strategy, enterprise-wide vision and mission by deriving strategy map and applying it to the private education institution. To measure the performance of BSC model instruction, KPI corresponding to the strategic objectives of each perspective was derived. Conclusion: BSC model generally introduces to large-sized companies and public institutions. In this study, BSC model is developed by focusing on small and medium sized private institution. Furthermore, this study is more than simple model development, it makes a connection with achievement of strategic objectives, enterprise-wide vision and mission through strategy map and strategy execution method. Through the developed BSC model and strategy execution method, utilization plan in practice and customized model for private education institutions coexisting profit and non-profit objectives were developed, and academic implications were presented.

중.소규모 건설현장 안전점검 모질 연구 (A Study on Safety Inspection Model for Small Scale Construction Field)

  • Domestic construction industry has considerable level of construction performance and technology thanks to the economic development and as the result of performing diverse oversea construction project. However, construction disasters have been steadily increasing, and do severe disasters at faster pace. Most of such disasters happen at small and small medium-sized construction fields, which contract size is less than 10 billion won. small and medium-sized construction fields are not obliged to designate a safety manager, and have limitations in engaging self-regulating disaster prevention activities due to reduced budget for safety facilities. For the small and medium-sized construction sites with less than 10 billion won, the Ministry of Labor has been carrying out mobile inspections of construction safety. However, the effect so far is insignificant and an improvement plan is required. Therefore, in the present thesis, we derive problems appearing in the current construction safety mobile inspection system, investigate and study systems in foreign countries, and suggest an efficient and effective plan to operate safety technology inspections. First of all, we establish a standard to select sites to be inspected that are high in construction risk and disaster occurrence probability In addition, we suggest a plan to take administrative and judiciary measures based on the total score for disaster factors considering the disaster occurrence probability and the illegal practices. Furthermore, a scheme to maximize the effect of disaster prevention is sought by building an organic cooperative system between the Ministry of Labor, Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency and other organizations specialized in instruction of construction disaster prevention. Finally, we induce a research conclusion that leads to self-regulating safety management through checking and instructing systematic management on mobile inspections.

전산모델에 의한 응축기내에서의 기체유동현상의 예측 (Prediction of Flow Pattern inside a Power Condenser by Computer Modelling)

  • The flow pattern inside the power condenser is generally known to be very complicated due to the phase change and turbulence effects as well as the effect of condenser geometry. In the present study, the flow pattern inside the power condenser was numerically simulated with a personal computer. The widely known CHAMPION 2/E/FIX(Concentration, Heat and Momentum Program Instruction Outfit, 2D/Elliptic/Fixed grid) computer code was modified for this purpose. The flow was asssumed to be two-dimensional and steady-state, and the tube bank was considered to be homogeneous porous medium. Simple turbulent diffusion coefficients based on the appropriate experiments were obtained for the computation. Through this analytical approach, the flow pattern could be predicted fairly well. The computational results also show that the location of the air vent plays an important key role in determining the efficiency of the condenser.
