  • To obtain the basic information for the effective use of collagen, the flow behavior of collagen extracted from skin tissue was studied. The viscosity of collagen varied with sex, age and the kinds of collagen by extraction method. Regardless of the kinds of collagen, the viscosity of collagen extracted from $6{\sim}12$ week old rat was relatively high. In case of the same age, the viscosity showed higher in female than in male rat and in acid soluble collagen than in insoluble collagen. The solution of the collagen showed the characteristics of Bingham plastic and thixotropic fluid, and the viscosity varied distinctly with temperature, pH, ethanol concentration and collagen concentration. As collagen concentration increased to 6%, the consistency of acid soluble- and insoluble collagen showed a tendency to increase linearly(r = 0.972 for acid soluble collagen, r = 0.957 for insoluble collagen). In that range of collagen concentration, the increasing velocity of consistency was higher in acid soluble collagen than in insoluble collagen. The consistency of collagen solution was decreased according to temperature rising. In case of acid soluble collagen, the consistency is decreased abruptly between $30{\sim}40^{\circ}C$. According to pH variation, the consistency of acid soluble collagen showed biphasic phenomenon, though the consistency of insoluble collagen was found not to be influenced by pH. The consistency of acid soluble- and insoluble collagen according to ethanol concentration showed high between $40{\sim}60%$ of ethanol concentration.

  • To select sclerotia to be used for strain isolation, water-soluble and water-insoluble alkaloids contents of the sclerotia of ergot fungus were determined. The sclerotia parasitic on the genus Elymus were found to contain greater amount of the alkaloids, up to 1.44%, than the sclerotia from the genus Agropyron. The major portion of the total alkaloid contents was the water-insoluble alkaloids. No correlation was found between the alkaloid contents and the lipid contents of the sclerotia analyzed.

  • A suitable model for the estimation of the drug release from nanoparticles has been varied and problematic, especially for the release from lipid nanoparticles containing water-insoluble drugs, due to the difficult particle collection from the release medium. Dialysis membrane has been widely used for the release test from colloidal carrier systems. The amount of drug from the carriers in normal dialysis diffusion technique was very low typically. • Insoluble catalytic electrodes were fabricated by RF magnetron sputtering of Pt on Ti substrates and the performance of seawater electrolysis was compared in these electrodes to that is DSA electrodes. The Pt-sputtered insoluble catalytic electrodes were nearly 150 nm-thick with a roughness of $0.18{\mu}m$, which is 1/660 and 1/12 of these values for the DSA (dimensionally stable anodes) electrodes. The seawater electrolysis performance levels were determined through measurements of the NaOCl concentration, which was the main reaction product after electrolysis using artificial seawater. The NaOCl concentration after 2 h of electrolysis with artificial seawater, which has 3.5% NaCl normally, at current densities of 50, 80 and 140 mA/$cm^2$ were 0.76%, 1.06%, and 2.03%, respectively. A higher current density applied through the electrodes led to higher electrolysis efficiency. The efficiency reached nearly 58% in the Pt-sputtered samples after 2 h of electrolysis. The reaction efficiency of DSA showed higher values than that of the Pt-sputtered insoluble catalytic electrodes. One plausible reason for this is the higher specific surface area of the DSA electrodes; the surface cracks of the DSAs resulted in a higher specific surface area and higher reaction sites. Upon the electrolysis process, some Mg- and Ca-hydroxides, which were minor components in the artificial seawater, were deposited onto the surface of the electrodes, resulting in an increase in the electrical resistances of the electrodes. However, the extent of the increase ranged from 4% to 7% within an electrolysis time of 720 h.

  • The use of chemotherapeutics induces cardiotoxicity and affects immune functions, therefore development of combinatorial agents against cardiotoxicity and immunosuppression needs to be explored. Previous studies of the hexane insoluble fraction (HIF) of an ethanolic extract of Ficus septica leaves showed anticancer effects singly and in combination with doxorubicin on T47D breast cancer cells. In this present study, it was evaluated for its immunomodulatory activities in doxorubicin-treated rats. Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into five groups consisting of six rats each as follows: Group 1, receiving oral saline 10 ml/kg BW (control group); Group 2, receiving HIF dose 750 mg/kg BW orally, once daily; Group 3, receiving HIF dose 1.500 mg/kg BW orally, once daily; Group 4, given oral saline 10 ml/kg BW (normal group); Group 5, receiving HIF dose 1.500 mg/kg BW orally, once daily. The rats of group 1-3 were intramuscularly administered with doxorubicin at a dose of 4.67 mg/kg BW at the days 1 and 4 to suppress immune functions. Concomitantly, the rats were treated with saline or HIF for seven consecutive days (1 to 7). Treatment of HIF succeeded in reducing side effects of doxorubicin based on increasing lymphocyte density and phagocytosis activity and capacity of macrophages, as well as increasing the CD8+ blood level and decreasing spleen IL-10 expression. Hexane insoluble fraction of of ethanolic extract of Ficus septica leaves has potential as a protective agent combined with doxorubicin.
