Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different-sized drill tips and laser irradiation times on the initial stability of orthodontic miniscrews placed in Er,Cr:YSGG-laser pre-drilled holes in an animal model. Materials and Methods: Laser pre-drilled holes were made in dog mandibular bone with an Er,Cr:YSGG laser using irradiation times of 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 seconds, and tip diameters of 0.4 and 0.6 mm. The maximum diameter and depth of the pre-drilled holes was measured with micro computed tomography. The maximum insertion torque was measured during placement the miniscrew. Result: Laser pre-drilled holes were conical shaped. The maximum diameter of pre-drilled holes increased with longer laser irradiation times (P>0.05) and larger tip diameters (P<0.05). The depth of pre-drilled holes increased with longer laser irradiation times and larger tip diameters (P<0.05). When the 0.4 mm tip, but not the 0.6 mm tip, was used, the insertion torque decreased significantly with longer laser irradiation times (P<0.05). Conclusion: Tip diameter impacted insertion torque more than irradiation time. It takes at least 9 seconds using a 0.6 mm tip to create a 0.8 mm diameter and 1.0 mm depth hole in thick cortical bone.
PURPOSE. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implant thread depth on primary stability in low density bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The insertion torque was measured by inserting Ti implants with different thread depths into solid rigid polyurethane blocks (Sawbones) with three different bone densities ($0.16g/cm^3$, $0.24g/cm^3$, and $0.32g/cm^3$). The insertion torque value was evaluated with a surgical engine. The static compressive strength was measured with a universal testing machine (UTM) and the Ti implants were aligned at $30^{\circ}$ against the loading direction of the UTM. After the static compressive strength test, the Ti implants were analyzed with a Measurescope. RESULTS. The Ti implants with deeper thread depth showed statistically higher mean insertion torque values (P<.001). Groups A and group B had similar maximum static compressive strengths, as did groups C and D (P>.05). After the static compressive strength, the thread shape of the Ti implants with deeper thread depth did not show any breakage but did show deformation of the implant body and abutment. CONCLUSION. The implants with deeper thread depth had higher mean insertion torque values but not lower compressive strength. The deep threads had a mechanical stability. Implants with deeper thread depth may increase the primary stability in areas of poor quality bone without decreasing mechanical strength.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate a comparison of implant bone bed preparation with Er,Cr:YSGG laser and conventional drills on the relationship between implant stability quotient (ISQ) values and implant insertion variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Forty implants were inserted into two different types of pig rib bone. One group was prepared with conventional drills and a total of 20 implants were inserted into type I and type II bone. The other group was prepared with a Er,Cr:YSGG laser and a total of 20 implants were inserted into type I and type II bone. ISQ, maximum insertion torque, angular momentum, and insertion torque energy values were measured. RESULTS. The mean values for variables were significantly higher in type I bone than in type II bone (P < .01). In type I bone, the ISQ values in the drill group were significantly higher than in the laser group (P < .05). In type II bone, the ISQ values in the laser group were significantly higher than in the drill group (P < .01). In both type I and type II bone, the maximum insertion torque, total energy, and total angular momentum values between the drill and laser groups did not differ significantly (P ${\geq}$ .05). The ISQ values were correlated with maximum insertion torque (P < .01, r = .731), total energy (P < .01, r = .696), and angular momentum (P < .01, r = .696). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, the effects of bone bed preparation with Er,Cr:YSGG laser on the relationship between implant stability quotient (ISQ) values and implant insertion variables were comparable to those of drilling.

Purpose : To analyze the effect of implant designs on insertion torque and stress by performing a comparative study on von Mises stress, torque and normal force through a three-dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and methods : Models of the screw type implant were used to model the implant as a form placed in the mandibular premolar region applying a three-dimensional finite element method. Screw type implant designs were classified into 4 types of parallel ones and 7 types of tapered ones. Other factors were simulated to represent clinical environment. Results : In parallel implant designs, higher and wider threads resulted in higher insertion torques and higher stress distributions. In tapered implant designs, changes in the taper led to remarkable differences in the insertion torques. It was difficult to determine a certain tendency of stress distribution around the implants since the stress level was too high around them. In tapered implant designs, smaller implants demonstrated lower insertion torques than the original type and were relatively less dependent on the degree of taper. Tapered implants showed higher insertion torques and higher stress distributions than parallel implants. Conclusion : According to this study, although the tapered implant demonstrated a higher insertion torque than the parallel implant, stress tended to be concentrated in the entire fixture of the tapered implant due to the inefficient stress distribution.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical performance of mini-screws during insertion into artificial bone with use of the driving torque tester (Biomaterials Korea, Seoul, Korea), as well as testing of Pull-out Strength (POS). Methods: Experimental bone blocks with different cortical bone thickness were used as specimens. Three modules of commercially available drill-free type mini-screws (Type A; pure cylindrical type, Biomaterials Korea, Seoul, Korea, Type B; partially cylindrical type, Jeil Medical, Seoul, Korea, Type C; combination type of cylindrical and tapered portions, Ortholution, Seoul, Korea), were used. Results: Difference in the cortical bone thickness had little effect on the maximum insertion torque (MIT) in Type A mini-screws. But in Type B and C, MIT increased as the cortical bone thickness Increased. MIT of Type C was highest in all situations, then Type B and Type A in order. Type C showed lower POS than Type A or B in all situations. There were statistically significant correlations between cortical bone thickness and MIT, and POS for each type of the mini-screws. Conclusion: Since different screw designs showed different insertion torques with increases in cortical bone thickness, the best suitable screw design should be selected according to the different cortical thicknesses at the implant sites.
The force/torque sensor for robot is developed. The compliance algorithm for peg-in-hole insertion task using the forec/troque sensor is developed. The system consists of an IBM PC, robot, force/torque sensor, strain meter, A/D board, and interface board. The IBM PC functions as a main processor and the robot controller as a slave processor. The sensor is constructed to measure $T_x$, $T_y$, $F_z$ which are necessary to precisely execute a peg-in-hole insertion task by SCARA type assembly robot. The outputs of sensor are analyzed. On the basis of the analysis, compliance algorithm for peg-in-hole insertion task is developed. Some comments concerning the development of wrist force/torque sensor and compliance algorithm are given.

Objective: Small orthodontic mini-implants are useful as anchorage. However they have some weaknesses such as loosening. This study was carried out to analyze the mechanical effects of the dual pitch and diameter on the insertion and removal torque of mini-implants. Methods: The threads of mini-implants were mono and dual pitch. The diameters of mini-implants were 1.4 mm and 1.6 mm. Four groups were tested (mono 1.4 mm, mono 1.6 mm, dual 1.4 mm and dual 1.6 mm). All were inserted and removed on polyurethane foam with the torques being measured. Results: The maximum torque of the dual pitch groups was higher than the mono pitch groups during removal but lower during insertion. The maximum torque of the 1.6 mm diameter groups was higher than the 1.4 mm diameter groups during insertion and removal. The dual pitch 1.4 mm group showed the lowest insertion torque but had similar or superior levels of removal torque to that of the mono pitch 1.6 mm group. Conclusions: The dual pitch especially showed a continuous high removal torque after the peak. Despite the small diameter, the dual pitch might improve the initial mechanical stability.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants of different surfaces, namely, machined (untreated), etched (acid-etched), RBM (treated with resorbable blasting media) and hybrid (RBM + machined), with respect to the following criteria: physical appearance of the surface, measurement of surface roughness, and insertion pattern. Methods: Self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants (Osstem implant, Seoul, Korea) with the abovementioned surfaces were obtained. Surface roughness was measured by using a scanning electron microscope and surface-roughness-testing machine, and torque patterns and vertical loadings were measured during continuous insertion of mini-implants into artificial bone (polyurethane foam) by using a torque tester of the driving-motor type (speed, 12 rpm). Results: The mini-implants with the RBM, hybrid, and acid-etched surfaces had slightly increased maximum insertion torque at the final stage ($p$ < 0.05). Implants with the RBM surface had the highest vertical load for insertion ($p$ < 0.05). Testing for surface roughness revealed that the implants with the RBM and hybrid surfaces had higher Ra values than the others ($p$ < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy showed that the implants with the RBM surface had the roughest surface. Conclusions: Surface-treated, self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants may be clinically acceptable, if controlled appropriately.
Statement of problem: An orthodontic miniscrew implant has been used as a skeletal anchorage for orthodontic treatment. However, any relation among the influence of the cortical bone, morphologic differences of orthodontic miniscrew implants and new bone formation hasn't been made clear yet. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the orthodontic miniscrew implant could work as an intraoral skeletal anchorage immediately and stably for orthodontic treatment after insertion of it. Material and methods: Two types of orthodontic miniscrew implants were used in this experiment; tapered type and straight type. One hundred and sixty eight orthodontic miniscrew implants were inserted into the tibiae of 21 rabbits and sacrificed on 3, 7, 11, 14, 21 and 28days later after insertion of them to study removal torque values and histologic and histomorphometric analyses. Results: The results were as follows. 1. The removal torque values of the tapered type were higher than those of the straight type in all groups(p<0.05). 2. There wasn't any distinguishing differences between the tapered type and the straight type about the new bone formation percentage. 3. The removal torque values for both the tapered type and the straight type were gradually decreased at early stages of the test but started to increase at the 7 days group of the straight type and the 11 days group of the tapered type. 4. New bone formation percentage was increased gradually for both the tapered and the straight types as time passed(p<0.05). 5. It was found that the tapered type showed lower values in the cortical bone about both the maximum equilibratory stress distribution and the maximum principal stress distribution than the straight type in linear finite elements analysis. Conclusion: According to the research, the removal torque values were decreased at 7 days group of the tapered type and 11 days group of the straight type after the insertion of the orthodontic miniscrew implants in tibiae of rabbits. Considering the human bone activity, it is better to apply the orthodontic force $3{\sim}4$ weeks later than to apply it immediately after the insertion of orthodontic miniscrew implants. Considering that general orthodontic force is about $250{\sim}500$ grams, the tapered type can be worked as a stable skeletal anchor age in an orthodontic treatment even if the orthodontic force is applied on it immediately after the insertion of it.
Objective: This study was designed to analyze the primary and secondary stability characteristics of orthodontic mini-screws of tapered design when compared with the cylinder mini-screw. Methods: A total of 48 mini-screws were placed into the buccal alveolar bone of the mandible in 6 male beagle dogs. Comparison was made between tapered and cylinder type mini-screws (Biomaterials Korea, Seoul, Korea). Maximum insertion torque (MIT) was measured using a torque sensor (Mark-10, MGT 50, USA) during installation, and maximum removal torque (MRT) was recorded after 3 and 12 weeks of loading. Results: Taper mini-screws showed a higher MIT value of 22.3 Ncm compared with cylinder mini-screw showing 13.6 Ncm (p < 0.001). The MRT of the taper mini-screw showed a significantly higher value of 9.1 Ncm than those of cylinder mini-screw of 5.7 Ncm at 3-weeks after installation (p < 0.05). However, there was no difference in the MRT value between the taper and cylinder mini-screws at 12 weeks of loading. Conclusions: These results showed that the high insertion torque of the taper mini-screw design increases initial stability until 3 weeks of loading, but does not have any effect on the secondary stability at 12 weeks of loading.
