  • Red pepper, one of the major economic crops in Korea, is being affected by anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum acutatum. To control this disease, an antagonistic bacterial strain, Bacillus subtilis YGB36 identified by 16S rDNA sequencing, physiological and biochemical analyses is used as a biological control agent. In vitro screening revealed that the strain YGB36 possess strong antifungal activity against the pathogen Cylindrocarpon destructans. The strain exhibited cellulase, protease, amylase, siderophore production and phosphate solubility. In vitro conidial germination of C. acutatum was most drastically inhibited by YGB36 cell suspensions (106 cfu/ml) or culture filtrate. Development of anthracnose symptoms was reduced on detached immature green pepper fruits by treatment with cell suspensions, and its control value was recorded as 65.7%. The YGB36 bacterial suspension treatment enhanced the germination rate of red pepper seeds and promoted root development and growth under greenhouse conditions. The in vitro screening of fungicide and insecticide sensitivity test against YGB36 revealed that the bacterial growth was not affected by any of the insecticides, and 11 fungicides out of 21 used. Collectively, our results clearly suggest that the strain YGB36 is considered as one of the potential biocontrol agents against anthracnose disease in red pepper.

  • This research was carried out to investigate the seasonal occurrence of major pests and the effects of releases of natural enemies for biological control of the major pests in eggplant greenhouse. A total of 8 pest species in 7 families were identified. Among these pests, Myzus persicae, Aphis gossypii, Frankliniella occidentalis, Tetranychus urticae and Trialeurodes vaporariorum were the dominant species in eggplant greenhouse. Two aphid species occurred mainly from May to June, but their populations decreased rapidly from July. The population density of F. occidentalis was high from June to July and T. urticae and T. vaporariorum were abundant from July to September during the growing season of eggplant. In the trials of biological control of pests, aphids could be suppressed within the range of $87{\sim}97%$ by two times releases of Chrysopa pallens eggs. F. occidentalis and T. urticae could be suppressed within the range of $76{\sim}90\;and\;87{\sim}91%$ by three times releases of Orius sauteri adults, respectively. The releases of C. pallens eggs and O. sauteri adults were as effective as three times applications of insecticides for the control of aphids, F occidentalis and T. urticae from May to September.

  • Loess-sulfur complex has been widely used as an environmental friendly organic materials for insecticides and fungicides in crop cultivation. However, there are high concerns about skin and eye irritation for farm workers due to the high alkaline properties of loess-sulfur complex. The acute toxicity evaluation was conducted with three samples of loess-sulfur complex in different pH (pH 9, 10, 11) in order to supply the evidentiary data for selecting the optimal product among the test materials. The results of acute oral toxicity using rats showed $LD_{50}$ of over 2,000 mg/kg b.w. for all three samples of loess-sulfur complex. The calculated acute dermal $LD_{50}$ of all tested materials was over 4,000 mg/kg b.w.. The Skin and eye irritation indicated that all tested materials have no irritation. Consequently, it was suggested that loess-sulfur complex be low in acute toxicity at all different pH values (pH 9~11).

  • Phenylformamidine derivatives are well known as insecticides for their specific activity against the insects. It has now been established that they show insecticidal activity as agonists on the octopamine receptor which is located in the synapse membrane. The reaction of triethylorthoformate and fluoroanilines gave formimidates (1) in good yields and N',N'-Disubstituted N-fluorophenylformamidine derivatives were synthesized more easily by using microwave. This microwave reaction condition gave products in high yields and faster reaction time than conventional methods. All the compounds were screened for their biological activity agaist harmful insects of plant hoppers, moths, aphids and mites. Synthetic compounds of 2-I-a, 2-I-c, 2-I-d, 2-II-d showed good activity against mites and plant hoppers.

  • This study was conducted from 1991 to 1993 to develop a fungicidal spray program for the apples exportable to the United States of America, in which quarantine and pesticide residue in agricultural products are strictly regulated. In 1991, 2 spray schedules were applied to an orchard, in one of which the 7 fungicides registered for apple both in Korea and U.S. were used, and in the other of which the Bordeaux mixture for which the tolerance was exempted in U.S. was used 2 times along with those 7 fungicides. The apple white rot and fruit infection by Alternaria mali were not effectively controlled by the 7 fungicides alone; however, the control efficacy was raised by adding the Bordeaux mixture to the spray schedule. In 1992, 4 spray schedules were applied in which the kinds of fungicides and spray intervals were different one another. The results suggested that an effective spray program can be developed by adopting the Bordeaux mixture for 3 times or adopting the imminoctadine-triacetate which has not tolerance level in U.S. for same times in the vulnerable stage of apple white rot and alternaria blotch. In spite of the high efficacies against major apple diseases, the Bordeaux mixture could not be recommended to the apple growers due to the various defects such as restrictions in compatibility with insecticides and acaricides, troublesomeness in preparation and spray, especially the harmful effect on the finish of Fuji apples. In 1993, a spray program adopting 3 times of imminoctadine-triacetate during the growing season of apple was developed, which not only can effectively control the major apple diseases but also avoid the pesticide residue problems if it was sprayed 2 or 3 times after bagging. On the basis of the 3 years results, a basic fungicide spray program was formulated in which 1~3 times of imminoctadine-triacetate and 1~2 times of bitertanol were adopted in addition of the 7 common fungicides registered in both countries. In the results of application of the spray schedule to the actual farming in the 4 areas of Kyungpook Province in 1994, no noticeable defects were detected at the first year trial. However, this spray program will be continuously evaluated and modified to obtain better control efficacies against major apple diseases.

  • The persistence of butachlor and nitrofen in different soil conditions applied organic matter, lime, and other pesticides was studied under submerged and field moisture capacity. Degradation of the herbicides in soil was significantly retarded by autoclaving the soil and half-life of nitrofen was much longer than that of butachlor under this condition. Submerging the soil enhanced degradation of the herbicides, in particular that of nitrofen. On the other hand, half-life of nitrofen under field moisture capacity was twice longer than that of butachlor. Increased amendment of rice straw to the soil shortened the half-life of nitrofen under submerged soil, however it prolonged that of butachlor when the amendment was exceeded 1000kg/10a level. Liming the soil stimulated herbicide decomposition in the soil, which appears to be pH independent. Butachlor degradation in submerged soil was slightly stimulated by simultaneous application of fungicides and insecticides, but nitrofen persistence was not influenced.
