It is common that in the vegetable cultivation areas, the farmers tend to continue the heavy fertilization to maximize the crop yields in short term. This results in the accumulation of fertilizer elements in the soil and increase in the electrical conductivity of soil. Disregarding these, farmers continue to apply heavy doses of fertilizers. A field experiment was conducted to find out on such a soil whether fertilizer application taking the quantity of nutrients accumulated in the soil into account would save the fertilizer without losing the yield of crop, using Chinese cabbage and spinach as test crops. The findings of the experiment is summarized as following. 1. The yield of Chinese cabbage was not affected by reduction of $19kg\;P_2O_5/10a$ and $7kg\;K_2O/10a$ as compared to farmers doses, and in case of spinach the yield rather was increased under the reduction of $22kg\;P_2O_5/10a$ and $22kg\;K_2O/10a$. 2. The reduction of fertilizers according to plant nutrient status of soils did not affect the inorganic nutrient contents of the crops significantly, in both Chinese cabbage and spinach. 3. A trend was observed that the reduction in the P and K fertilizers application would shorten the storage period of Chinese cabbage. 4. The reduction in P and K fertilizers application resulted in the reduction in available P, exchangeable K, EC and $NO_3-N$ in the soil after the harvest of the crops.
Field microplot(D 20cm, L 85cm) experiment filled with Bonryang sandy loam soil(Typic Udifluvents) was conducted to obtain quantitative information on the change of soil pH under different soil moisture regime and ladino clover cultivation, and the movement of applied nutrient under the rainfed bare soil condition. Slaked lime increased soil pH of the applied layer. $NH_4-N$ evolved from urea hydrolysis was more effective in raising the subsoil pH rather than the exchangeable Mg and Ca. Under the different soil miosture condition downward movement of Cl and $NO_3-N$ lowered subsoil pH during the middle of ladino clover growth. Leaching of CI and $NO_3-N$ down to the out of the soil microplot and increasing movement of Ca and Mg into the subsoil produced. a slight increase of subsoil pH during the late crop growth. The mean downward movement of applied nutrient 5.5 months after field installation of microplot in the bare soil under rainfed condition(1207mm) was in the order : Cl= more than 80.0>Inorganic nitrogen= 75.8>K= 67.3>Mg=62.7>Ca=18.1>P=2.3cm respectively.

A research was performed to examine the applicability of aerobic fixed-biofilm reactors for removal of biodegradable organics in raw waters. Crushed briquette ashes or granite were utilized as media. Experiments were carried out by feeding packed bed reactors with a synthetic raw water prepared by dissolving phenol in tap water with other inorganic nutrients. Results of the research showed that the effluent TBOD concentrations were lower than 6 mg/l when the influent BOD concentrations were kept below 50 mg/l and a detention time of about 2.7 hours was provided. The SBOD concentrations of the treated waters should be less than 5 mg/l since the effluent SS could be removed by conventional water treatment methods such as coagulation and filtration. It was also found that most of the SS in the effluents were humic materials since the effluent SS caused little BOD. This means the biofilm in the reactor was in endogenous respiration phase due to low F/M ratio. According to the results of this study, it is recommended to pretreat any raw water contaminated with biodegradable organics in an aerobic fixed biofilm reactor with a detention time of 2 to 3 hours.
In order to investigate water quality factors controlling chlorophyll-$a$ concentrations, the by-daily monitoring was conducted from February to November 2010 in 4 stations of Masan Bay. Seasonal variability in physico-chemical factors was mainly controlled by freshwater loading as a result of precipitation: chemical oxygen demand, suspended solids and nutrient concentrations rapidly increase during the heavy rainy season, whereas they decrease in the dry season. From late winter to mid spring, phosphorus and silica sources relative to Redfield ratio were probably functioned as limiting factor for phytoplankton flourishing in surface waters, but nitrogen concentration during mid-spring to autumn might be responsible for the increase of phytoplankton biomass. The multiple regression analysis revealed that variations in chlorophyll-$a$ concentration may be strongly correlated with changes of water temperature, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved inorganic phosphorus in spring, and salinity, chemical oxygen demand and precipitation in summer. Consequently, in the Masan Bay, a heavy rainfall event is an important factor to determine changes of biotic and abiotic factors, and in addition the dynamics of chlorophyll-$a$ concentration are strongly affected by changes of hydrological factors, especially water temperature, precipitation and nutrients.
The objective of this study was to assess the regime of heat shock protein and leaf temperature caused by high temperature stress in chinese cabbage grown in alpine region. In monsoon period, high temperature and heavy rain have caused a stress condition for the cultured higher plants. Chinese cabbages were grown in different altitude, i.e. 600 m and 1,100 m. It was demonstrated that heat shock protein (Hsp 90) in alpine chinese cabbage leaf was actively expressed by high temperature and surplus nitrogen application. As a results of thermo-graphically observed leaf temperatures, chinese cabbage grown in high altitude region were ranged from 20.5 to $24.3^{\circ}C$ while in low altitude from 24.0 to $31.5^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, analysis of assimilated nutrients indicated that total nitrogen content was higher in plant grown under high temperature than under low temperature.
Both long period of summer drought and unusual high water temperature in 1988 caused the harmfull effect to the aquacultural organisms in south coast of Korea. One of those was the mass mortality of arkshell seedlings in Jinhae Bay. The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of environmental factors on arkshell seedlings by investigating not only water quality and food organisms in culturing grounds, but also meteorological conditions. Water temperature in November was higher at $2.0^{\circ}C$ than mean water temperature and the concentration of total inorganic nitrogen and N/P ratio were $0.38{\mu}g-at/l,$ 0.98, respectively which indicated the exhaustion of nutrients, especially nitrogen in the study area. In analysis of phytoplankton population structure, species diversity index(H) , equitability-index(e), species richness $index(d_1)$ were low, but dominance $index({\delta}_2)$ was high at the value of 98.4 and dominant species was Nitzschia pungens. In conclusion, it seems that mass .mortality of arkshell seedlings in November was resulted from the metabolism disorder with poor food organism under the unstable marine environment.
An experiment was conducted (28 to 44 weeks) to study the laying performance, shell quality, and nutrient retention of White Leghorn layers fed different levels of non-phytate phosphorus (NPP). Six levels of NPP (0.15, 0.18, 0.21, 0.24, 0.27 and 0.30%) at a constant calcium (Ca) level (3.5%) in maize-soya-deoiled rice bran based diets were formulated, and each experimental diet was offered ad libitum for 16 weeks to five replicates with five birds in each replicate. The body weight of WL layers fed diet containing 0.15% NPP was significantly (p<0.05) lower than those fed diet with 0.30% NPP, at 44 weeks of age. However, the hen day egg production, egg weight, daily feed intake and feed consumed per dozen eggs were not influenced by the variation in the NPP levels in the diet. The bone ash content was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the birds fed 0.30% NPP as compared with those fed diets up to 0.24% NPP. Bone ash content was intermediate in the birds fed diet containing 0.27% NPP. The tibia strength followed the same trend as that of bone ash. Dietary NPP content had no influence on serum Ca and protein concentration and activity of alkaline phosphatase. However, serum inorganic P concentration increased linearly with NPP content in the diet. The concentration of P was significantly (p<0.05) higher in the birds fed 0.27% NPP or higher as compared with those fed 0.15% NPP. Levels of dietary NPP had no influence on egg quality parameters like shell wt, shell thickness, shell strength and specific gravity. The retention of nutrients such as DM, N and Ca were comparable among the WL layers fed different levels of NPP. However, the retention of P decreased linearly with increase in the level of NPP in the diet. The retention of P in the birds fed diets up to 0.24% NPP in the diet was comparable, however further increasing the content of NPP (either 0.27% or 0.30%) reduced the retention of P. Based on the results of the present study, 0.15% NPP (180 mg/b/d) in the diets of WL layers is adequate for optimum production performance during 28 to 44 weeks of age, however, WL layers require 0.27% NPP (324 mg /b/d) in the diet for optimum production with better bone mineralization.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of selenium (Se) sources and levels on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and Se retention in growing-finishing pigs. A total of 56 crossbred pigs ([$Landrace{\times}Yorkshire$]${\times}$Large White) with average $28.5{\pm}0.2kg$ BW were allotted to 7 treatments on the basis of sex and weight in two replicates and four pigs per pen. A $2{\times}3$ factorial arrangement of treatments was used in a randomized complete block (RCB) design. Two sources of Se (selenite Se or Se-enriched yeast) were added at 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 mg/kg to each treatment diet. A basal diet without Se supplementation was the seventh treatment group. Three pigs per treatment were randomly selected and samples of loin, liver, pancreas and a kidney were collected, frozen and later analyzed for Se. The digestibility trial was conducted to evaluate the apparent absorption and retention of Se and availability of other nutrients. Growth performance was not affected by dietary sources and levels of Se. No growth retardation was observed in the 0.5 mg/kg dietary Se treatment group regardless of Se sources. The Se concentration of serum in Se supplemented groups was increased compared with the control group (p<0.01). During the growing and finishing phase, Se in serum was clearly increased when organic Se was provided (p<0.01). Interaction of Se source ${\times}$ Se level was observed in Se concentration of loin, liver and pancreas of the pigs at the end of experiment. Selenium retention in the liver, kidney, pancreas and loin of pigs was increased as dietary Se level increased and was higher when pigs were fed organic Se resulting in an interaction response (p<0.01). Nutrient digestibilities were not affected by dietary Se sources or levels. No dietary Se source ${\times}$ Se level interaction was observed in nutrient digestibility. The results from this experiment indicated that dietary Se sources and levels affected the distribution of Se in the body of growing-finishing pigs. Organic source of Se, such as Se-enriched yeast resulted in higher serum and tissue Se concentration compared to inorganic form, while no beneficial effects on nutrient digestibility were observed from dietary Se supplementation in growing-finishing pigs.

To understand the temporal variation of phytoplankton community in the Antarctic coastal ecosystem, physicochemical parameters, chlorophyll a, and primary productivity were measured as a component of the 7th KARP (Korea Antarctic Research Program) in 1994. Data were collected every month between February and December except four months (June-September) when the study area was frozen. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from negligible to 3.03 ${\mu}g/l$, averaging 0.63 ${\mu}g/l$. The primary productivity ranged 0.53-18.95 mg C/$m^3{\cdot}day$, and the depth-integrated primary productivity ranged 41.28-560.20 mg C/$m^3{\cdot}day$. A positive relationship was observed between the phytoplankton biomass and irradiance ($r^2$=0.29, p < 0.01). The degree of correlation between the primary productivity and irradiance ($r^2$=0.85, p < 0.001) was significantly higher than that between the phytoplankton biomass and irradiance. However, neither temperature nor inorganic nutrients seem to affect the temporal variation of primary productivity.
A pot experiment was carried out to find out the effects of the sludge application on corn and Chinese cabbage growth and changes in soil chemical properties with sludges collected from 4 plants at 0, 12.5, 25, 50, and $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$ levels and chemical fertilizer. With the corn experiment, the pot where sludge and chemical fertilizers were treated together, greater amount of sludge resulted in initial growth inhibition. In general, higher sludge treatment rates resulted in better growth in the end, whereas initial growth was inhibited due to high the electrical conductivity of saturated extracts(ECe) for the Chinese cabbage. However, the highest yield among sludge treatments was lower than the yield with chemical fertilizers. While the treatments resulted in chemical changes in soil showing differences of cation exchange capacity, organic matter contents, and nitrogen contents, hardly any changes were detected before and after crops were grown. Inorganic nutrients such as Na, K, Ca and Mg showed similar changes. The ECe in soil saturation extract decreased after crops were grown. The more sludge was treated, the greater was the decrease. The differences of ECe in the soil saturation extract with varying degrees of treatment were also reduced after crops were grown. Available phosphorus content increased during growth. Due to the low nitrogen content in sludge, when nitrogen becomes the determining factor for the amount of sludge treatment, phosphorus buildup resulted from continued application of sludge could be raised. Therefore, it is advisable to use phosphorus, not nitrogen content, in determining the amount of sludge treatment and chemical fertilizer as supplementary sources for nitrogen.
