As the LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) tank contains cryogenic liquid, realistic thermal analyses are of a primary importance for a successful design. The structural details of the LNG tank are so complicated that some strategies are necessary to reasonably predict its temperature distribution. The proposed heat transfer model can consider the beneficial effects of insulation layers and a suspended deck on temperature distribution of the outer concrete tank against cryogenic conditions simply by the boundary conditions of the outer tank model. To this aim, the equilibrium condition or heat balance in a steady state is utilized in a various way, and some aspects of heat transfer via conduction, convection and radiation are implemented as necessary. Overall thermal analysis procedures for the LNG tank are revisited to examine some unjustifiable assumptions of conventional analyses. Concrete and insulation properties under cryogenic condition and a reasonable conversion procedure of the temperature-induced nonlinear stress into the section forces are discussed. Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed schemes in predicting the actual temperature and stress distributions of the tank as affected by the cryogenic LNG for the cases of normal operation and leakage from the inner steel tank. It is expected that the proposed schemes enable a designer to readily detect the effects of insulation layers and a suspended deck and, therefore, can be employed as a useful and consistent tool to evaluate the thermal effect in a design stage of an LNG tank as well as in a detailed analysis.
A liquid storage rectangular tank structures are used in many fields of civil, mechanical and marine engineering. Especially, Ship structures have many tanks in contact with inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and cargo tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tank structures. Many authors have studied vibration of cylindrical and rectangular tanks structures containing fluid. Few research on dynamic interaction among tank walls through fluid are reported in the vibration of rectangular tanks recently. In case of rectangular tanks, structural coupling between adjacent panels and effect of vibration modes of multiple panels on added mass have to be considered. In the present paper, coupling effect between panels of tank structure on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region have investigated numerically and experimentally.

Insulation system of LNG carrier has made important roles such as maintaining a proper Boil off Ratio(BOR) for the cargo and avoiding the excessive low temperature of the adjacent inner hull beyond the permissible limit. At the same time, safety and economy of the LNG transportation by the ship are connected with the performance of the insulation system. Also, thermal insulation system of LNG carrier is one of the most advanced technique with the structure analysis of tank, welding and assembling. In this study a computer program is developed to calculate the hull temperature distribution and BOR, which are important factors in thermal design for the Moss Rosenberg Verft spherical tank type LNG carrier. Detailed results for hhull temperature distribution close to LNG tank, BOR and the thickness effect of insulation material are reported in this paper in the range of standare design sea condition.

In this paper, possibility of controlling motion of a floating structure using a tuned liquid damper (TLD) is numerically investigated. A TLD is a tank partially filled with liquid. Sloshing phenomena of liquid inside a tank can suppress movement of the tank subject to external excitations at specific frequency. The effects of sloshing phenomena inside a rectangular floating body on its sway motion are investigated by varying excitation frequency. First, a grid-refinement study is carried out to ensure validity of grid independent numerical solutions using present numerical techniques. Then, sway motion of the floating body subjected to wave with five different frequencies are simulated. The normalized amplitudes of sway motion of the target floating body are compared over the frequency, for cases with and without water inside the floating body. It is shown that the motion of the floating body can be minimized by matching the sloshing natural frequency to excitation frequency.
This paper presents the strength safety of a hydrogen gas composite fuel tank, which is analyzed using a FEM based on the criterion of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. A hydrogen gas composite tank in which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of 6061-T6 material and carbon fiber wound composite layers of T800-24K is charged with a filling pressure of 70MPa and a gas storage capacity of 130 liter. The FEM results indicated that von Mises stress, 255.2MPa of an aluminum liner inner tank is low compared with that of 95% yield strength, 272MPa. And a carbon fiber stress ratio of a composite fuel tank is 3.11 in hoop direction and 3.04 in helical direction. These data indicate that a carbon fiber gas tank is safe in comparison to that of a recommended criterion of 2.4 stress ratio. Thus, the proposed composite tank with 130 liter capacity and 70MPa filling pressure is usable in strength safety.
This paper presents integrated control and safety management system for a LNG storage tank. This system is for collecting and analyzing the temperature, pressure, and vibration signals in which are used to control and guarantee the system safety and leakage control from the inner gas tank. Based on the investigations of LNG tank related failures and accidents, we strongly recommend the modification and new development of current safety related measuring and control systems because the LNG tank is constructed bigger and bigger in recent years for the efficiency and safety increments. Thus, this paper presents newly developed integrated control and safety management system for a large LNG storage tank. This system provides the enhanced measuring and control systems, and new displacement based safety system, which may detect and control the deformation properties of tank structures. In addition, we recommend that the new integrated control and safety management system should be coupled by process integrated innovation system (PIIS) for an increased safety, efficiency, and productivity of LNG tanks.

In-situ structural health monitoring of filament wound pressure tanks were conducted during water-pressurizing test using embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. We need to monitor inner strains during working in order to verify the health condition of pressure tanks more accurately because finite element analyses on filament wound pressure tanks usually show large differences between inner and outer strains. Fiber optic sensors, especially FBG sensors can be easily embedded into the composite structures contrary to conventional electric strain gages (ESGs). In addition, many FBG sensors can be multiplexed in single optical fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques. We fabricated a standard testing and evaluation bottle (STEB) with embedded FBG sensors and performed a water-pressurizing test. In order to increase the survivability of embedded FBG sensors, we suggested a revised fabrication process for embedding FBG sensors into a filament wound pressure tank, which includes a new protecting technique of sensor heads, the grating parts. From the experimental results, it was demonstrated that FBG sensors can be successfully adapted to filament wound pressure tanks for their structural health monitoring by embedding.
In this numerical study, the leakage safety of the LNG tank in which is constructed by membrane inner tank-plywood-polyurethane form-plywood-prestressed concrete structures has been presented for four leakage analysis models. The LNG leak criterion of the tank wall with a storage capacity of $200,000\;m^3$ is analyzed based on the thermal resistance technique. This means that if the cryogenic temperature of a leaked LNG is detected at the outer side of the PC wall, it may be leaked through the wall thickness of the tank. The calculated results based on the thermal resistance method between two walls show that the plywood, PUF, and another plywood walls may block the leakage of the leaked LNG even though the strength of these walls is already collapsed by a leaked LNG pressure. But, the leaked LNG may pass the thickness of the prestressed concrete wall for a period of elapsed time even though the PC outer tank supports the leaked LNG pressure. Thus, the PC outer tank may extend the leakage time of a leaked LNG.

In this paper, the FE analysis has been presented for the leakage safety of the membrane LNG storage tank based on the thermal resistance effects between the insulation panel and prestressed concrete structure. The FEM calculated results show that the leakage safety of plywood and polyurethane materials does not guarantee any more due to a strength failure of the insulation structure. But the PC structure of outer tank may delay leaked LNG of 10 days even though the inner tank and insulation structure are simultaneously failed. This means that the membrane LNG storage tank may be safe because of the stiffness of the outer tank.
