Combined cycle power plant is a system where a gas turbine or steam turbine is used to produce shaft power to drive a generator for producing electrical power and the steam from the HRSG is expanded in a steam turbine for additional shaft power. Combined cycle plant is a one from of cogeneration. The temperature of the exhaust gases from a gas turbine ranges from $400^\circC$ to $600^\circC$, and can be used effectively in a heat recovery steam generator to produce steam. Combined cycle can be classed as a "topping(gas turbine)" and a "bottoming(steam turbine)" cycle. The first cycle, to which most of the heat is supplied, is called the topping cycle. The wasted heat it produces is then utilized in a second process which operates at a lower temperature level and is therefore referred to as a "bottoming cycle". The combination of gas/steam turbine power plant managed to be accepted widely because, first, each individual system has already proven themselves in power plants with a single cycle, therefore, the development costs are low. Secondly, the air as a working medium is relatively non-problematic and inexpensive and can be used in gas turbines at an elevated temperature level over $1000^\circC$. The steam process uses water, which is likewise inexpensive and widely available, but better suited for the medium and low temperature ranges. It, therefore, is quite reasonable to use the steam process for the bottoming cycle. Only recently gas turbines attained inlet temperature that make it possible to design a highly efficient combined cycle. In the present study, performance analysis of a dual pressure combined-cycle power plant is carried out to investigate the influence of topping cycle to combined cycle performance.

In this study, we performed a numerical study of hydrogen/air combustion in the combustion chamber of an ultra micro gas turbine. The supply flow rate and equivalence ratio are used as variables, and the commercial computational fluid dynamic program (STAR-CCM) is used for the numerical study of the combustion. The flow rate significantly affects the flame position, flame temperature, and pressure ratio between the inlet and the outlet. The flame position is close to the outlet in the combustion chamber, and the flame temperature and pressure ratio monotonously increases with the supply flow rate. The change in the equivalence ratio does not affect the flame position. The maximum flame temperature occurs under stoichiometric conditions.

In this paper, the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) with vapor-vapor ejector is proposed newly. At this OTEC system, a vapor-vapor ejector is installed at inlet of condenser. The vapor-vapor ejector plays a very important role in increasing of the production work of low-stage turbine throughout the decrement of outlet pressure of ejector. The performance analysis is conducted for optimizing the system with HYSYS program. The procedure of performance analysis consists of outlet pressure of high turbine, the mass ratio of working fluid at separator, total working fluid rate, and nozzle diameters of vapor-vapor ejector. The main results is summarized as follows. The nozzle diameter is most important thing in this study. When each nozzle diameter of vapor-vapor ejector is 10 mm, the efficiency of OTEC system with vapor-vapor ejector shows the highest value. So it is necessary to set the optimized nozzle diameters of vapor-vapor ejector for achieving the high efficiency OTEC power system.
Gas flow measurement in a closed duct was performed using multi-point Pitot tubes. Measurement uncertainty was assessed for this measurement method. The method was applied for the measurement of air flow into a gas turbine engine in an altitude engine test facility. 46 Pitot tubes, 15 total temperature Kiel probes and 9 static pressure tabs were installed in the engine inlet duct of inner diameter of 264 mm. Five tests were done in an airflow range of 2~10 kg/s. The flow was compressible and the Reynolds numbers were between 450,000 and 2,220,000. The measurement uncertainty was the highest as 6.1% for the lowest flow rate, and lowest as 0.8% for the highest flow rate. This is because the difference between the total and static pressures, which is also related to the flow velocity, becomes almost zero for low flow rate cases. It was found that this measurement method can be used only when the flow velocity is relatively high, e.g., 50 m/s. Static pressure was the most influencing parameter on the flow rate measurement uncertainty. Temperature measurement uncertainty was not very important. Measurement of boundary layer was found to be important for this type of flow rate measurement method. But measurement of flow non-uniformity was not very important provided that the non-uniformity has random behavior in the duct.

Experiments were done for the comparison of performance and flow characteristics between a two -stage axial flow fan and a counter-rotating axial flow fan. Each stage of the two -stage axial flow fan used fur the present study has an eight bladed rotor and thirteen slater blades. The front and the rear rotor of the counter - rotating axial flow fan have eight blades each and are driven by coaxial counter ro latins shafts through a gearbox located between the rear rotor and the electric motor. Both of the two axial fan configurations have identical rotor blades and the same operating condition fur the one -to-one comparison of the two. Performance curves of the two configurations were obtained and compared by varying the blade pitch angles and axial gaps between the blade rows. The fan characteristic curves were obtained following the Korean Standard Testing Methods for Turbo Fans and Blowers (KS B 6311). The fa n flow characteristics were measured using a five-hole probe by a non-nulling method. The velocity profiles between the hub and tip of the fans were measured and analyzed at the particular operating condition s of peak efficiency, minimum and maximum pressure coefficients. The peak efficiency of the counter-rotating axial fan was improved about 2% respectively, compared with the two stage axial fan. At the minimum pressure coefficient point of the two stage axial fan, the fan inlet flow patterns show that axial velocity highly decreased in the vicinity of the blade tip region. Also, the reverse flow took place at the blade tip.

A small supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. Experiments were performed to find the flow characteristics of a supersonic turbine with the cascade positions and to find a factor of the expansion loss. The supersonic cascade with a 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested with the cascade positions. The flow was visualized by a Z-type Schlieren system. The static pressures at the turbine cascade inlet and outlet were measured by pressure transducers and a pressure scanner. Also, The total pressures at the turbine cascade back flow were measured. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions of the supersonic turbine were observed. And the flow characteristics in the supersonic turbine with the cascade positions were observed.
This paper describes experimental study and performance improvement of 2 stage Gifford-McMahon (G-M) type pulse tube cryocooler for cryopump. The objective of this study is to improve the efficiency of 2 stage pulse tube cryocooler for substituting 2 stage G-M cryocooler used in cryopump. The target cooling capacities are 5 W at 20 K and 35 W at 80 K for the $1^{st}$ and the $2^{nd}$ stage, respectively. These values are good cooling capacities for vacuum level in medium size ICP 200 cryopump. Design of the 2 stage pulse tube cryocooler is conducted by FZKPTR(Forschungs Zentrum Karlsruhe Pulse Tube Refrigerator) program. In order to improve the performance of 2 stage pulse tube cryocooler, U-type pulse tube cryocooler is fabricated and connecting tubes are minimized for reducing dead volumes and pressure losses. Also, to get larger capacities, orifice valves and double inlet valves are optimized and the compressor of 6 kW is used. On the latest unit, the lowest temperatures of 2 stage pulse tube cryocooler are 42 K ($1^{st}$ stage) and 8.3 K ($2^{nd}$ stage) and the cooling capacities are 40 W at 82.9 K ($1^{st}$ stage) and 10 W at 20.5 K ($2^{nd}$ stage) with 6.0 kW of compressor input power. This pulse tube cryocooler is suited for commercial medium size cryopump. In performance test of cryopump with 2 stage pulse tube cryocooler, pumping speed for gaseous nitrogen is 4,300 L/s and the ultimate vacuum pressure is $7.5{\times}10^{-10}$ mbar.

A numerical simulation of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow was performed for a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly. The governing equations based on a nonorthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components were used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The modified $\kappa-\xi$. turbulence model which included the effect of compressibility was used. The results of twodimensional transient calculation for the axisymmetric configuration were compared with the experimental data. Although slightly low rms velocity was predicted compared to the experimental data, predicted velocity distributions at the valve exit and in-cylinder region showed good agreements with the experimental data. The flow at the valve exit was separated at the same valve lift position with the experimental data. Two vortices incylinder region were generated during the initial intake process. The clockwise main vortex became strong and moved upward to the top wall. The counter-clockwise second vortex became weak and stick to the upper left corner of the cylinder. After middle intake process, new vortex adjacent to upper cylinder wall appeared by the piston motion and therefore, the in-cylinder flow was formed into three vortices. The cylinder pressure just before bottom dead center of piston was higher than inlet pressure and then the reverse flow occured at the valve exit. The in-cylinder flow characteristics were strongly dependent on piston motion, but insensitive to valve motion.

Measurements of OH chemiluminescence in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor at equivalence ratios ranging from 0.63 to 0.89 were reported. The signal from the first electronically excited state of OH to ground state was detected through a band-pass filter with an ICCD. The objectives of this study are two: One is to see the effects of equivalence ratio on global heat release rate and local Rayleigh index distribution. To get the local Rayleigh index distribution, the line-of-sight images were inverted by tomographic method, such as Abel do-convolution. Another aim is to investigate the validity of using OH chemiluminescence acquired with an ICCD as a qualitative measure of local heat release. For constant inlet velocity and temperature, the overall intensities of OH emission acquired at different equivalence ratio showed periodic and higher value at high equivalence ratio. OH intensity averaged over one period of pressure increased exponentially with equivalence ratio. Local Rayleigh index distribution clearly showed the region of amplifying or damping the combustion instability as equivalence ratio increased. It could provide an information/insights on active control such as secondary fuel injection. Finally, local heat release rate derived from reconstructed OH images were presented fur typical locations.

Considering the complexity and difficulty on the researching, how to enhance the performance of ejector-diffuser system effectively became a significant task. In the present study, the supersonic nozzle was redesigned using Chevrons installed at the inlet of the secondary stream of the ejector-diffuser system for the purpose of the performance improvement. A CFD method based on Fluent has been applied to simulate the supersonic flows and shock waves inside the ejector. Primary numerical analysis results show that the Chevrons get a positive effect on the ejector flows. The comparison of ejector performance with and without the Chevron was obtained and optimal number of chevron lobe is discussed to increase the performance. The ejector-diffuser system performance is discussed in terms of the entrainment ratio, pressure recovery as well as total pressure loss.
