A three-dimensional computation was conducted to understand effects of the inlet boundary layer thickness on the loss mechanism in a low-speed axial compressor operating at the design condition(${\phi}=85\%$) and near stall condition(${\phi}=65\%$). At the design condition, the flow phenomena such as the tip leakage flow and hub comer stall are similar independent of the inlet boundary layer thickness. However, when the axial compressor is operating at the near stall condition, the large separation on the suction surface near the casing is induced by the tip leakage flow and the boundary layer on the blade for thin inlet boundary layer but the hub corner stall is enlarged for thick inlet boundary layer. These differences of internal flows induced by change of the boundary layer thickness on the casing and hub enable loss distributions of total pressure to be altered. When the axial compressor has thin inlet boundary layer, the total pressure loss is increased at regions near both casing and tip but decreased in the core flow region. In order to analyze effects of inlet boundary layer thickness on total loss in detail, using Denton's loss models, total loss is scrutinized through three major loss categories in a subsonic axial compressor such as profile loss, tip leakage loss and endwall loss.
This article shows the study on the arresting sound occurrence due to the interaction of the centrifugal Fan and bellmouth suction flow with bellmouth height as variable. It has accomplished to measure of inlet noise and also to analysis suction pressure distribution through experiment and also using CFD. The main cause of sound occurrence was judged with the effect due to static pressure change of bellmouth surface.
A numerical investigation has been conducted to find the effects of pressure losses by struts and rakes, and averaging methods on the performance of a multi-stage axial fan and a multi-stage axial compressor. Struts and rakes which produce pressure losses are installed upstream of the aerodynamic inlet plane in the fan and the compressor rigs. Some of normal stator vanes are substituted with thick vanes with total pressure probes to measure total pressure between stages. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier- Stokes equations with $k-{\omega}$ SST turbulence model were applied to analyze the pressure losses by the struts, inlet rakes, and thick instrumented vanes. The hexahedral grids were used to construct computational domain. Inlet pressure losses were evaluated for the compressor as a function of Mach number. The passage pressure losses due to the instrumented vanes were evaluated at the two speed lines in the fan. Total properties, such as pressure and temperature, were evaluated at the exit of the fan and the compressor with two different averaging methods which are area-averaging and mass-averaging, respectively.

Three-dimensional compressible turbulent flow fields within the passage of a diffusing S-duct have been simulated by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with SIMPLE scheme. The average inlet Mach number is 0.6 and the Reynolds number based on the inlet diameter is $1.76{\times}10^6$ The extended $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to modeling the Reynolds stresses. Computed results of the flow in a circular diffusing S-duct provide an understanding of the flow structure within a typical engine inlet system. These are compared with experimental wall static-pressure, total-pressure fields, and secondary velocity profiles. Additionally, boundary layer thickness, skin friction values, and streamlines in the symmetric plane are presented. The computed results depict the interaction between the low energy flow by the flow separation and the high energy flow by the reversed duct curvature. The computed results obtained using the extended $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model.
This study investigated the changes in performance and operating characteristics of an F-class gas turbine according to the change of working fluid from air to carbon dioxide. The revised gas turbine is the topping cycle of the semi-closed oxy-fuel combustion combined cycle. With the same turbine inlet temperature, the $CO_2$ gas turbine is expected to produce about 85% more power. The main contributor is the greater compressor mass flow and the added oxygen flow for the combustion. Compressor pressure ratio increases about 50%. However, the gas turbine efficiency reduces about 10 %. Modulation of inlet guide vane to reduce the compressor inlet mass flow, the major purpose of which is to reduce the compressor inlet Mach number, was also performed.
Research results for the pressure drop variance depending on operation conditions such as change of inlet concentration, pulse interval, and face velocity, etc., in a pulse air jet-type bag filter show that while at $3kg/cm^2$ whose pulse pressure is low, it is good to make an pulse interval longer in order to form the first layer, it may not be applicable to industry because of a rapid increase in pressure. In addition, the change of inlet concentration contributes more to the increase of pressure drop than the pulse interval does. In order to reduce operation costs by minimizing filter drag of a filter bag at pulse pressure $5kg/cm^2$, the dust concentration should be minimized, and when the inlet dust loading is a lower concentration, the pulse interval in the operation should be less than 70 sec, but when inlet dust loading is a higher concentration, the pulse interval should be below 30 sec. In particular, in the case that inlet dust loading is a higher concentration, a high-pressure distribution is observed regardless of pulse pressure. This is because dust is accumulated continuously in the filter bag and makes it thicker as filtration time increases, and thus the pulse interval should be set to below 30 sec. If the equipment is operated at 1m/min of face velocity, while pressure drop is low, the bag filter becomes larger and thus, its economics are very low due to a large initial investment. Therefore, a face velocity of around 1.5 m/min is considered to be the optimal operation condition. At 1.5 m/min considered to be the most economical face velocity, if the pulse interval increases, since the amount of variation in filter drag is large, depending on the amount of inlet dust loading, the operation may be possible at a lower concentration when the pulse interval is 70 sec. However, for a higher concentration, either face velocity or pulse interval should be reduced.
The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics associated with the gas cooling of the supercritical carbon dioxide in a horizontal tube have been investigated experimentally. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a gas cooler of cooling systems using $CO_2$refrigerant. The test section is consisted of 6 series of 455 mm in length, 4.15 mm ID copper tube, respectively. The effects of the inlet temperature, pressure and mass flow rate on the heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$in a horizontal tube is studied in detail. The heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$is varied by temperature, inlet pressure, and mass flow rate of $CO_2$. This has maximum value at near the pseudocritical temperature. The pressure drop is changed by inlet pressure and mass flow rate of $CO_2$. The results have been compared with those of previous work. The heat transfer correlation at the supercritical gas cooling process is also suggested.
This paper presents the pulsation of carburetor inlet and outlet pressure of a small SI gasoline engine. The engine used in this paper is a 23cc, single cylinder, diaphragm carburetor, two-stroke, air-cooled for brush cutter. The rpm and pressure wave pulsation at the inlet and the outlet of carburetor were measured and analysed for the understand of the internal air flow into the barrel on the diaphragm carburetor. These data should be used for the development of the duel fuel injection system for gasoline and LPG. The results showed that the carburetor inlet pressure variations were very steady, but the pressure variations at carburetor outlet were very sensitive to the pressure variation into the crank case and were to similar independently to the engine speed on partial opened throttle conditions. According to increasing engine speed, the pressure waves started to come out and be developed after closing the intake port of the engine at carburetor outlet. Reverse flow occurred on the WOT (wide open throttle) condition.
The analysis of the fluid flow characteristics in reactor pressure vessel is an important part of the hydraulic design of nuclear power plant, which is related to the structure design of reactor internals, the flow distribution at core inlet and the safety of nuclear power plant. The flow distribution and mixing characteristics in the pressurized reactor vessel for the 1000MWe advanced pressurized water reactor is analyzed by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method in this study. The geometry model of the full-scaled reactor vessel is built, which includes the cold and hot legs, downcomer, lower plenum, core, upper plenum, top plenum, and is verified with some parameters in DCD. Under normal condition, it is found that the flow skirt, core plate holes and outlet pipe cause pressure loss. The maximum and minimum flow coefficient is 1.028 and 0.961 respectively, and the standard deviation is 0.019. Compared with other reactor type, it shows relatively uniform of the flow distribution at the core inlet. The coolant mixing coefficient is investigated with adding additional variables, showing that mass transfer of coolant occurs near the interface. The coolant mainly distributes in the 90° area of the corresponding core inlet, and mixes at the interface with the coolant from the adjacent cold leg. 0.1% of corresponding coolant is still distributed at the inlet of the outer-ring components, indicating wide range of mixing coefficient distribution.
