To improve the safety, the fuel cell operate inside a pressurized enclosure which contains inert gas so called protective gas. The protective gas not only prevents the mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, but also removes the water in the vessel with the condenser. This study presents the details of the flow optimization in order to reduce the humidity in the fuel cell housing. The protective gas flow in the fuel cell container is studied by Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) simulations. This study focuses on optimizing the geometry of an protective gas circulation system in fuel cell module to reduce the humidity in the vessel. CFD analysis was carried out for an existing model to understand the flow behavior through the fuel cell system. Based on existing model CFD results, geometrical changes like inlet placement, optimization of outlet size, modification of fuel cell module system are carried out, to improve the flow characteristics. The CFD analysis of the optimized model is again carried out and the results show good improvement in protective gas flow behavior.

Design of experiments (DOE) technique has been used to design an exhaust heat exchanger to reduce the exhaust gas temperature under high load conditions in a spark-ignition engine. The DOE evaluates the influence and the interaction of a selected eight design parameters of the heat exchanger affecting the cooling performance of the exhaust gas through a limited number of experiments. The heat exchanger was installed between the exhaust manifold and the inlet of the close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) to reduce thermal aging. To maximize the heat transfer between exhaust gas and coolant, fins were implemented at the inner surface of the heat exchanger. The design parameters consist of the fin geometry (length, thickness, arrangement, and number of fin), coolant direction, heat exchanger wall thickness, and the length of the heat exchanger. The acceptable range of each design parameter is discussed by analyzing the DOE results.

Exhaust system is composed of several parts. Among, them , design of muffler system strongly influences on engine efficiency and noise reduction. So , through comprehension of flow characteristics inside muffler is necessary . In this study , three-dimensional steady and unsteady compressible flow analysis was performed to understand the flow characteristics, pressure loss and amplitude variation of pulsating pressure. The computational grid generation was carried out using commercial preprocessor ICEM CFD/CAE. And the three-dimensional fluid motion inside the muffler was analyzed by STAR-CD, the computational fluid dynamics code. RNG k-$\varepsilon$ tubulence model was applied to consider the complexity of the geometry and fluid motion. The steady and unsteady flow field inside muffler such as velocity distribution, pulsating pressure and pressure loss was examined. In case of unsteady state analysis, velocity of inlet region was converted from measured pulsating pressure. Experimental measurement of pressure and temperature was carried out to provide the boundary and initial condition for computational study under three engine operating conditions. As a result of this study, we could identify the flow characteristics inside the muffler and obtain the pressure loss, amplitude variation of pulsating exhaust gas.

For predicting eigenfrequency and initial growth rate of combustion instabilities in lean premixed gas turbine combustor, linear thermoacoustic analysis model was developed in the current paper. A model combustor was selected for the model validation, which has well-defined inlet and outlet conditions and a relatively simple geometry, compared to the combustor in the previous works. Analytical linear equations for thermoacoustic waves were derived for a given combustion system. It was found that the prediction results showed a good agreement with the measurements, even though there was underestimation for instability frequencies. This underestimation was more obvious for a longer flame (i.e. wider temperature distribution) than for a shorter flame.

The effect of inlet mixer geometries on the two-phase flow patterns in square micro-channel with $600{\times}600{\mu}m$ was investigated experimentally in this paper. The 4 different mixer configurations based on the Y, Impacting, and two T types (gas and liquid inlets were switched) were used. The test fluids were nitrogen and water. The liquid and gas superficial velocities were 0.01~10 m/s and 0.1~100 m/s, respectively. Several distinctive flow patterns, namely, annular, slug-annular, slug, slug-bubbly, bubbly, and churn flow could be seen. The flow pattern maps for each mixer were suggested, and it can be concluded that two-phase flow patterns are not very sensitive to the mixer geometries. But the mixing behaviors of gas and liquid for each mixer were different for slug and bubbly flow. Thus, the characteristics of slug and bubble for each case were not same.
The objective of this paper is to find out the most effective injection angle for the purpose of deicing through SC/Tetra, a commonly used CFD software. Nowadays, vehicles are developed giving priority to an improved interior which emphasizes a pleasant environment and thermal comfort without decreasing the basic performance. Clear visibility is one of the most important phenomenon. The primary factors which affect the efficiency of deicing are 3D geometry of Defrost Nozzle, the inlet velocity and temperature of the flow and the injection angle. However in this paper, all these parameters are optimized by changing the injection angle. A wide range of injection angle from 5 degree to 50 degree have been considered for analysis. A very good defrosting performance has been achieved with 45 degree injection angle which can satisfy the condition of NHTSA.
A total of 17 experimental data for the onset of slugging, which is assumed to be the precursor of the condensation-induced waterhammer (CIWH), have been obtained for various How rates of water Incorporating the most recent correlations of interfacial heat transfer and friction factor developed for a circular geometry and using an improved criterion of transition from stratified to a slug flow, two existing analytical models to predict lower and upper bounds for CIWH have been upgraded. Applicability of the present as well as existing CIWH models has been tested by comparison with two sets of CIWH data. The result of this comparison shows that the applicability of the present as well as existing models is reasonably good. Based on the present models for CIWH, a computer code entitled as“KAIST-CIWH”has been developed and sample guide charts to find CIWH free regions for a given combination of major flow parameters in a long horizontal pipe have been presented along with the results of parametric studies of major parameters (D, P, $T_{f,in}$, and L/D) on the critical inlet water flow rate($W_{f,in}_crit$ for both lower and upper bounds. In addition, two simple formulas for lower and upper bounds that can be used in an emergency for quick results have been presented.

This paper describes gas turbine combustion characteristics of synthetic natural gas which contains a small amount hydrogen content. By conducting ambient pressure high temperature combustion test at gas turbine relevant combustor geometry, the combustion characteristics such as combustion instability, NOx and CO emission, temperatures at turbine inlet, nozzle and dump plane, and flame structure from high speed OH chemiluminescence images were investigated when changing hydrogen content from zero to 5%. From the results, qualitative and quantitative relationships are derived between key aspects of combustion performance, notably NOx/CO emission and combustion instability. Natural gas containing hydrogen up to 5% does not show significant difference in view of all combustion characteristics except combustion instability. Only up to 1% hydrogen addition could not change the pressure fluctuation and phase gas between fluctuations of pressure and heat release. From the results, it can be concluded that synthetic national gas which contains 1% of hydrogen can be guaranteed for the stable and reliable operation of natural gas firing gas turbine.
The use of special gas masks such as PAPR is strongly required for the safe and efficient work of fire-fighters in removing fire residue and rescue activity. Special gas masks commonly use canisters with carbon activated particles. This paper analyzed the pressure distribution, velocity distribution and pressure loss characteristics in canisters using CFD simulation, and showed pressure drops are affected by inlet air velocity, canister geometry and increase dramatically especially with the decrease of particle diameters and volume fractions.

Three different geometry shapes of the blade leading edge in a centrifugal compressor were investigated in this paper. Numerical simulation was done to analyze the effect of the leading edge shape on the performance of the centrifugal compressor. The result shows that compared to the blunt leading edge, the circular leading edge will raise the chocking mass flow. The pressure ratio and efficiency will increase obviously. Using elliptical leading edge will get a further improvement on the performance than circular leading edge. The analysis of the flow field shows that the leading edge often causes flow separation near the inlet; using circular leading edge and elliptical leading edge will reduce the separation. What's more, using circular and elliptical leading edge will also reduce the wake loss near the outlet of the impeller. In a centrifugal compressor, using circular or elliptical leading edge on the splitter will improve the pressure loading distribution of main blade near the position of the splitter leading, which will increase the pressure ratio.
