In diesel engine technology the drive to reduce emissions and fuel consumption with improved performance targets has led to many advances. In particular, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) have played a key role in achieving these aims by permitting flexible control of the engine inlet gas charge. The full potential of these devices are difficult to achieve due to limitations in the classical control methods. However, fuzzy logic is particularly appealing due to its simple heuristic nature. The controller used in this work was designed using the Matlab Fuzzy Logic Toolbox. The overall object is to access the potential for emissions and fuel consumption reductions during transient events whilst maintaining and even improving driveability. Classical control methods (PID), as used on production engines, are examined and contrasted with an coordinated control that utilizes fuzzy logic.

In this study, a series of conjugate heat transfer (CHT) analyses are conducted for a stage of a fully cooled high-pressure turbine (HPT) at elevated levels of free stream turbulence (Tu = 5% and 25.7%). The goal of the analyses is to investigate the influence of high turbulence intensity on the fluid-thermal characteristics of a nozzle guide vane (NGV). The turbine inlet temperature is defined by considering a typical radial temperature distribution factor (RTDF). The Unsteady Reynolds Average Navier-Stokes (URANS) CHT simulations are carried out using CFX 15.0, a commercial CFD package. The presented CFD modeling approach for high turbulence intensity is verified with the experimental data from two types of NASA C3X NGVs with films. The computation grid is generated for both the fluid and solid domains. The fluid domain grid is created using a tetrahedral grid system with prism layers because of its complex geometry, and the solid domain grid is composed of only tetrahedral elements. The analytical results are compared to understand the effect of turbulence on flow characteristics and metal temperature distributions. The results obtained in this study provide useful insights on the effects of high free stream turbulence and unsteadiness. The results also lead to the proposal of meaningful turbine design guidelines.
The main objective of this study was investigation of combustion instability characteristics in a lean partially premixed gas turbine dump combustor. Dynamic pressure transducers were located on combustor and inlet section to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference at each measurement places. Also flame shape and $CH^*$ chemiluminescence were measured using a high speed ICCD camera. The combustor length was varied in order to have different acoustic characteristics from 800 to 1090 mm. The first section of this paper shows the stability map in model gas turbine combustor. And the effects of combustor length, mixture velocity in the mixing section and equivalence ratio were studied by the pressure perturbation and heat release oscillation. Also, the instability frequency and mode analysis were studied in last two sections. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.
The design of a nuclear reactor core requires basic thermal-hydraulic information concerning the heat transfer regime at which onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) will occur, the pressure drop and flow rate through the reactor core, the temperature and power distributions in the reactor core, the departure from nucleate boiling (DNB), the condition for onset of flow instability (OFI), in addition to, the critical velocity beyond which the fuel elements will collapse. These values depend on coolant velocity, fuel element geometry, inlet temperature, flow direction and water column above the top of the reactor core. Enough safety margins to ONB, DNB and OFI must-emphasized. A heat transfer package is used for calculating convection heat transfer coefficient in single phase turbulent, transition and laminar regimes. The main objective of this paper is to study the possibility of power upgrading of WWR-S research reactor from 2 to 10 MWth. This study presents a one-dimensional mathematical model (axial direction) for steady-state thermal-hydraulic design and analysis of the upgraded WWR-S reactor in which two types of plate fuel elements are employed. FOR-CONV computer program is developed for the needs of the power upgrading of WWR-S reactor up to 10 MWth.

Electric and telecommunication industries are constantly striving towards miniaturization of electronic devices. Miniaturization of chips creates extra space on PCBs that can be populated with additional components, which decreases the heat transfer surface area and generates very high heat flux. Even though an air-cooling technology for telecommunication equipment has been developed in accordance with rapid growth in electrical industry, it is confronted with the limitation of cooling capacity due to the rapid increase of heat density. In this study, liquid-cooling heat exchangers with MPCM slurries were designed and tested by varying geometry and operating conditions. The liquid-cooling heat exchangers with 4-paths showed higher cooling performance than the others. The cooling performance of liquid cooling heat exchanger with MPCM slurries was more enhanced than that of the air cooling system. It's performance was also slightly superior to that of the water cooling system at the inlet temperature of $19^{\circ}C$.
Reported experimental and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies have demonstrated significant power augmentation of diffuser shrouded horizontal axis micro wind turbine compared to bare turbine. These studies also found the degree of augmentation is strongly dependent on the shape and geometry of the diffuser such as length and expansion angle. However study flow field over the rotor blades in shrouded turbine has not received much attention. In this paper, CFD simulations of an experimental diffuser shrouded micro wind turbine have been carried out with the aim to understand the mechanisms underpinning the power augmentation phenomenon. The simulations provide insight of the flow field over the blades of bare wind turbine and of shrouded one elucidating the augmentation mechanisms. From the analysis, sub-atmospheric back pressure leading to velocity augmentation at the inlet of diffuser and lowering the static pressure on blade suction sides have been identified as th dominant mechanisms driving the power augmentation. And effective augmentation was achieved for ${\lambda}$ above certain value. For the case turbine it is ${\lambda}$ greater than ${\approx}2$.
Tidal flow and water quality were simulated in this paper to assess environmental impact caused by pier construction projects in Onsan harbor system. The Surfacewater Modeling System (SMS) was applied to the Onsan harbor system, where coastal reclamation and dredging were planned to build the piers. A finite element mesh was constructed and refined to cover the complicated geometry of the Onsan harbor and the proposed reclamation area. The time variable change of tidal height at harbor inlet was given as an input condition to tidal simulation. The water quality simulation was based on the discharge rate of suspended solids at the reclamation area. The simulation results have shown reasonable agreements with real situations in both tidal flow and water quality. According to the proposed plan, tidal flow and water quality were predicted during and after the pier construction. The tidal simulation study showed that there would be no discernible change of tidal current in the harbor except for the dredged area. The water quality simulation, however, predicted that suspended solids would increase significantly near the reclaimed and dredged areas during construction.

Automotive turbochargers have become common in gasoline engines as well as diesel engines. They are excellent devices to effectively increase fuel efficiency and power of the engines, but they unfortunately cause several noise problems. The noises are classified into mechanical noises induced from movement of a rotating shaft and aerodynamic noises by air flow in turbochargers. The mechanical noises are whine and howling noises, and the aerodynamic noises are BPF (blade-passing frequency), pulsation, surge, some special frequency noises. These noises are bothering passengers because their levels are higher or their frequencies are clearly separated from engine or vehicle noises. The noise investigated in this paper is a BPF noise induced by compressor wheels, whose frequency is the multiplication of the number of compressor wheel blades and its rotational speed. The noise is strongly dependent upon the geometry of wheels and the number of blades. This study tried to apply a groove close to the inlet side of compressor wheels in order to reduce the BPF noise. The groove has successfully reduced the noise of narrow band frequency of a turbocharger. It shows that the groove could reduce the wide band frequency noise, the compressor BPF noise with a best shape of the groove.
A gas-liquid centrifugal separator is widely used in industry because of its simple geometry and little maintenance. Also, these separators have considerable advantages over filters, scrubbers or precipitators in term of compact design, low pressure drop and higher capacity. A gas-liquid centrifugal separator is a device that utilizes centrifugal force and low pressure to separate liquid from gas by density difference. Design parameters such as length of separation space, swirl vane exit angle, inlet to outlet pipe diameter ratio, models for separation efficiency and low pressure drop as a function of physical dimension are not available in literature. In present study, length of separation space (from vane to gas exit opening) has been studied using CFD. The 3-D Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. Based upon the obtained solutions, tangential velocities, centrifugal forces, vortices and total pressure losses are analyzed to find the best design parameters.
Computations were performed to investigate the flow, temperature and pollutants in two stage heavy-oil combustion burner. The burner geometry and flow conditions were provided by a burner company. The goal of the study is to understand combustion phenomena according to each air inlet's velocity, excessive air ratio and air temperature through CFD. Air flow rates at two inlets are adjusted by a damper inside a burner. Here, injection conditions of liquid fuel are kept constant throughout all simulations. This assumption is made in order to limit the complexity of oil combustion though it may cause some disagreement. The final goal of this research is to design a Low-NOx heavy oil combustion burner through comparison between computational study and experimental ones. Besides experiments, simulation works can give us insights into heavy oil combustion and help us design a Low NOx burner while saving time and cost. The computational study is based on k-e model, P-1 radiation model(WSGGM) and PDF, and is implemented on a commercial code, FLUENT.
