  • The investigation on the removal of 502 gas fro.In flue gas which causes serious air pollution was made by using a semi dry flue gas desulfurization method. Experiments were carried out as a function of process variables which would affect SO2 removal efficiency. Process variables inclilded SO2 inlet concentration, inlet temperature of simulated flue gas, sorbent weight fraction, and volume flow rate of sorbent slurry. In this study, used sorbent was Ca(OH), and simulated flue gas was prepared by mixing pure SO2 gas with air. Experimental conditions were varied at 140~18$0^{\circ}C$ of inlet temperature of the simulated flue gas, 500~2000ppm of inlet SO2 concentration, 0.4~1.0% of sorbent concentration, and 10~25 mL/min of flow rate of sorbent slurry. Among process variables, inlet concentration of SO2 was found to be the most significant factor to affect SO2 removal efficiency. The concentration of Ca(OH2) had a lower effect on SO2 removal than SO2 inlet concentration removal amount was 0.108, 0.141, 0.153 g SO2/g Ca(OH)2 respectively- As 200 mmol of HNO3 was added into slurry to improve removal efficiency, initial pH was maintained and solubility of slurry increased, so that removal efficiency elevated. Adding over 200 mmol of HNO3 into slurry caused removal efficiency lower. Therefore it could be concluded the optimum was 200 mmol of HNO3 input.

  • A three-phase fluidized-bed bioreactor including Thiobacillus sp. IW was tested to remove H_2S and $NH_3$ simultaneously. The inlet $H_2S$ was oxidized to $SO_4^{2-}$ by Thiobacillus sp. IW, and the $NH_3$ reacted with the $SO_4^{2-}$ to form $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. The removal efficiency of $H_2S$ was 98.4-99.9% for an inlet concentration of 36-730 ppm and that of $NH_3$ was 60.2-99.2% for an inlet concentration of 45-412 ppm. The removal efficiency of $NH_3$ was reduced when the inlet loading rate of $NH_3$ was increased above 10 mg/l/h. When the bioreactor was operated for 25 days with a lower inlet concentration of $NH_3$ compared with the of $H_2S$, the bioreactor exhibited an excellent performance with a stable pH, dissolved oxygen content, and cell concentration.

  • The electrical energy consumption (EEC) in removal of NO by a $UV/H_2O_2$ oxidation process was introduced and related to removal efficiency of this gas. The absorption-reaction of NO was conducted in a bubble column reactor in the presence of $SO_2$. The variation in NO removal efficiency was investigated for various process parameters including NO and $SO_2$ inlet concentrations, initial concentration of $H_2O_2$ solution and gas flow rate. EEC values were obtained in these different conditions. The removal efficiency was increased from about 22% to 54.7% when $H_2O_2$ concentration increased from 0.1 to 1.5 M, while EEC decreased by about 70%. However, further increase in $H_2O_2$ concentration, from 1.5 to 2, had no significant effect on NO absorption and EEC. An increase in NO inlet concentration, from 200 to 500 ppm, decreased its removal efficiency by about 10%. However, EEC increased from $2.9{\times}10^{-2}$ to $3.9{\times}10^{-2}kWh/m^3$. Results also revealed that the presence of $SO_2$ had negative effect on NO removal percentage and EEC values. Some experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of $H_2O_2$ solution pH. The changing of pH of oxidation-absorption medium in the ranges between 3 to 10, had positive and negative effects on removal efficiency depending on pH value.

  • $SO_2$ concentrations in oxy-fuel combustion flue gases increases about three times as high as that of conventional air combustion system owing to the flue gas recirculation for the control of combustion temperature. So the desulfurization reaction is different from that of the conventional air combustion system due to exceptionally high $CO_2$ and $SO_2$ concentration. In this study, drop tube furnace(DTF) system was used to investigate the desulfurization characteristics of limestone in oxy-fuel combustion furnace. The experiments were performed under $O_2/CO_2$ atmosphere to examine the effect of operating variables such as reaction temperatures, Ca/S ratios and inlet $SO_2$ concentrations on the $SO_2$ removal efficiencies. $SO_2$ removal efficiency increased with reaction temperature, Ca/S ratio and inlet $SO_2$ concentration. And the addition of water vapor resulted in about 4~6% of increase in $SO_2$ removal efficiency.

  • Based on the measurement data of the particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to a nominal 10 ${\mu}m$ (PM10) by the ${\beta}$-ray absorption method (BAM) equipped with an inlet heater and the gravimetric method (GMM) at two coastal sites in Korea, the optimal inlet heater temperature was estimated. By using a gas/particle equilibrium model, Simulating Composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium 2 (SCAPE2), water content in aerosols was estimated with varying temperature to find the optimal temperature increase to make the PM10 concentration by BAM comparable to that by GMM. It was estimated that the heated air temperature inside the BAM should be increased up to $35{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ at both sites. At this temperature range, evaporation of volatile aerosol components was minor. Similar ($30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$) temperature range was also obtained from the calculation based on the absolute humidity which changed with ambient absolute humidity and chemical composition of hygroscopic species.

  • This study is a theoretical analysis and experimental effect of oxygen concentration, exhaust velocity and trap inlet temperature on particulate ignition temperature with installation of ceramic filter trap in diesel engine. So the following results are obtained. 1, Based on the fundamental experiments of the regeneration process, the analytical model was developed and the results from the analytical model agreed with the experiments, then the validity of the model was proved. 2, The ignition temperature for accumulated particulate was proportional to the exhaust velocity and it was known that the optimum exhaust velocity was about 15m/sec. 3, The ignition temperature for accumulated particulate was inversely proportional to the oxygen concentration and the trap inlet temperature, and a minimum oxygen concentration of 5% was required to sustain regeneration. 4, This experimental filter trap(EX-66) is found about 30% of smoke reduction efficiency in comparison with existing muffler.

  • The main object of this study is to investigate the collection characteristics of wet-type rotating porous disk system experimentally. The experiment is carried out to analyze the pressure drop and collection efficiency for the present system with the experimental parameters such as system inlet velocity, stage number, tube diameter, inlet concentration, etc. In results, for the present system, at 5 stage and ${\upsilon}_{in}=1.8m/s$, the pressure drop becomes significantly lower as $64mmH_2O$ in comparison with that of the conventional wet type scrubber (Venturi scrubber, over $250mmH_2O$). The collection efficiencies increase with higher inlet velocity showing 92, 95.7, 98.4%, while $SO_2$ removal efficiencies decrease with increment of inlet velocity as 80, 65, 50% at ${\upsilon}_{in}=1.08$, 1.44, 1.8 m/s and tube diameter $D_t=10mm$, respectively. The present system is to be considered as an effective compact system for a simultaneous removal of particle/gas phase pollutants from marine diesel engines.

  • The reaction of sulfur dioxide with cupric oxide supported on zeolite was investigated over a temperature range of $250{\sim}450^{{\circ}C$. After the completion of the $SO_2$ removal reaction, the cupric sulfate produced was regenerated to copper by hydrogen or LPG. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency of $SO_2$ was improved with temperature increase and with $SO_2$ inlet concentration decrease. The reaction of $SO_2$ with CuO/Zeolite was well explained by the shrinking unreacted core model using first order chemical reaction control and diffusion control. THe reaction rate constant and the effective diffusivity were respectively as follows: 1k (cm/s) = 2.519 exp[-10991 (cal/mol)/RT] $De(cm^2/s) = 2.06 \times 10^{-5} exp[-8380 (cal/mol)/RT]$

  • The LiBr-H₂O absorption process on a horizontal tube has been analyzed numerically. The flow field, which was calculated in the authors' previous study by solving the fully elliptic Navier-Stokes equations with accurate free-surface-tracking method, is used to solve the temperature and concentration distributions in the absorption film. With the assumption that the absorbent is linear, calculations have been made for various inlet temperature and flow-rate conditions. For low inlet temperature, the absorption rate is large in the upstream region but the mean temperature also increases and as a result the absorption decreases as the film flows to downstream while high-inlet-temperature case does the opposite. The difference in the absorption rate due to the inlet temperature change becomes smaller in the downstream than that in the upstream. For large flow rate, the heat transfer to the wall becomes poor due to the thick film and so does the absorption rate. The analyses have also been carried out for multiple tube arrangement and the results show that the absorption rate converges after a few tube rows.
