  • The strength of material is scattered owing to the inhomogenity of microstructure, in spite of the same material. Therefore, in order to design the mechanical structure with the reliability engineering, it is important to grasp the statistic nature of material strength. In this paper, effects of grain sizes for the statistical nature of the fatigue crack growth was discussed. And the statistical of mechanical properties was compared with statistical nature of the fatigue crack growth rate.

  • The theoretical study of deformation behavior for continous extrusion process (CONFORM) is shown in this paper. The extrusion process is compared with a conventional route, side extrusion, considering extrusion ratios, flash gaps and coefficients of friction. In each case the distribution of strain and strain rate is predicted by using the finite element method. In this study simplifying assumptions on the deformation geometry are made to investigate the plastic flow occuring in the area of deformation of the Conform process.

  • This paper treats the conditions for the existence and stability properties of stationary solutions of reaction-diffusion equations of Gierer-Meinhardt type, subject to Neumann boundary data. The domains in which diffusion takes place are of three types: a regular hexagon, a rectangle and an isosceles rectangular triangle. Considering one of the relevant features of the domains as a bifurcation parameter it will be shown that at a certain critical value a diffusion driven instability occurs and Turing bifurcation takes place: a pattern emerges.

  • The ferromagnetic resonance properties of Mg ferrites which have various porosity grain size, and saturation magnetization are measured at one frequency. This allows a determination of the anisotropy field(Ha). The saturation magnetization multiplied by porosity is the resonance magnetic field. As the saturation magnetization increases, the linewidth decerases due to decrement of magnetic inhomogenity in sample. the porosity is a major factor broadening the linewidth for Mg ferrite when porosity is more thatn 6%, and the anisotropy field is dominant when porosity is less than 6%.

  • Age hardenable aluminum alloys show high specific strength, good thermal and electrical conductivity as well as lightness, and are typical aircraft materials. High fatigue strength and good resistancy against stress corrosion cracking are also important for aircraft aluminum alloys. Al alloy 7050 has been developed to meet the above mentioned requirements and the use of this alloy as forged aircraft part becomes more important. However, forged 7050 parts showed undersirable structures such as severe local grain coarsening in surface area and unproper metal flow that is degrading mechanical properties. In this paper, microstructural aspects of die forging in the Al alloy 7050 are investigated. Also suggested are the optimal forging conditions for microstructural control of Al alloy 7050.

  • The type, volume fraction, size, shape and arrangement of embedded particles influence the mechanical properties of the particle reinforced metal matrix composites. This presents the investigation of the SiC particle and porosity distributions in various aluminum matrix composites produced by cold- and hot-pressing. The microstructures were characterized by optical microscopy and stereological parameters. SiC and porosity volume fractions, and the anisotropy distribution function were measured to establish the influence of the consolidation method.

  • We studied a cluster family in the northern part of the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372) a group of clusters near NGC 3324 (Tr 15, NGC 3293, Loden 165, Loden 153 and IC 2581). We used data from UCAC4 to determine the cluster's membership and the near infrared CMDs of each cluster. We analyzed the spatial density and elongation as a function of radius for each cluster and found a possible interaction between NGC 3293 and Loden153. However, the shape distortion of NGC 3324 cannot be evaluated because of the inhomogenity in the coverage of UCAC4 in the east part of NGC 3324.

  • To reduce the effects of clutters with subsurface inhomogenities in ground-penetrating radar(GPR) images, an eigenimage based signal-processing technique is presented. If the conventional eigenimage filtering technique is applied to B-scan images of a GPR survey, relatively homogeneous clutters such as antenna ringing, direct coupling between transmitting and receiving antennas, and soil-surface reflection, can be removed sufficiently. However, since random clutters of subsurface inhomogenities still remain in the images, target signals are distorted and obscured by the clutters. According to a comparison of the eigenimage filtering results, there is different coherency between subsurface clutters and target signals. To reinforce the pixels with high coherency and reduce the pixels with low coherency, the pixel-by-pixel geometric-mean process after the eigenimage filtering is proposed here. For the validity of the proposed approach, GPR survey for detection of a metal target in a randomly inhomogeneous soil is numerically simulated by using a random media generation technique and the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. And the proposed signal processing is applied to the B-scan data of the GPR survey. We show that the proposed approach provides sufficient enhancement of target signals as well as remarkable reduction of subsurface inhomogeneous clutters in comparison with the conventional eigenimage filtering.
