  • KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) is developing the near-infrared camera system named KASINICS (KASI Near-Infrared Camera System) which will be installed at the 60cm f/13.5 Ritchey-Chretien telescope of the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO). The camera system is optimized for JHKL bands and has a 6 arcmin FOV. The optical system consists of two spherical mirrors and a 8-position filter wheel. With the exception for the dewar window, all optical elements are cooled inside cryogenic dewar. Since the Offner system is adopted to prevent thermal noises from outside of the telescope primary mirror, the secondary mirror of the Offner system acts as a cold Lyot stop. The optical performance does not change by temperature variations because the Aluminum mirrors contract and expand homogeneously with its mount. We finished the design and fabrication of the optical parts and are now aligning the optical system. We plan to have a test observation on 2006 January.

  • In search of the intracluster dusts, we have made a survey of globular clusters (GCs) with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) aboard AKARI, the Japanese infrared space satellite. The GCs are thought to host dust particles that are condensed from the material injected by the cluster asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. However, attempts to detect dust emission from GCs had not been successful until a significant amount of far-infrared (FIR) emission was detected close to the NGC 7078 center by the ISO observations (Evans et al. 2003). Recent FIR observations by the AKARI (Matsunaga et al. 2008) and the Spitzer Space Telescope (Boyer et al. 2006; Barmpy et al. 2009) reported a tentative detection of the dusts in NGC 5024 and NGC 6341, and also confirmed the previous ISO dust detection from NGC 7078. We have observed 17 selected GCs in four FIS wavebands at 65, 90, 140, and 160 micrometers. Each observation covers about $10'{\times}10'$ area centered at each GC. The resulting images show extended structures and/or blobs around the GCs. The extended structures are very suggestive of the Galactic cirrus, while the blobs around NGC 288 and NGC 4833 seem to be related to the two clusters. In this presentation, we will report four representative cases of our survey results and discuss the properties of newly detected sources.

  • This paper presents a localization system using ceiling images in a large indoor environment. For a system with low cost and complexity, we propose a single camera based system that utilizes ceiling images acquired from a camera installed to point upwards. For reliable operation, we propose a method using hybrid features which include natural landmarks in a natural scene and artificial landmarks observable in an infrared ray domain. Compared with previous works utilizing only infrared based features, our method reduces the required number of artificial features as we exploit both natural and artificial features. In addition, compared with previous works using only natural scene, our method has an advantage in the convergence speed and robustness as an observation of an artificial feature provides a crucial clue for robot pose estimation. In an experiment with challenging situations in a real environment, our method was performed impressively in terms of the robustness and accuracy. To our knowledge, our method is the first ceiling vision based localization method using features from both visible and infrared rays domains. Our system can be easily utilized with a variety of service robot applications in a large indoor environment.

  • MIRIS (Multipurpose Infra-Red Imaging System), is a small infrared space telescope which is being developed by KASI, as the main payload of Science and Technology Satellite 3 (STSAT-3). Two wideband filters (I and H) of the MIRIS enables us to study the cosmic infrared background by detecting the absolute background brightness. The narrow band filter for Paschen ${\alpha}$ emission line observation will be employed to survey the Galactic plane for the study of warm ionized medium and interstellar turbulence. The opto-mechanical design of the MIRIS is optimized to operate around 200K for the telescope, and the cryogenic temperature around 90K for the sensor in the orbit, by using passive and active cooling technique, respectively. The engineering and qualification model of the MIRIS has been fabricated and successfully passed various environmental tests, including thermal, vacuum, vibration and shock tests. The flight model was also assembled and is in the process of system optimization to be launched in 2012 by a Russian rocket. The mission operation scenario and the data reduction software is now being developed. After the successful mission of FIMS (the main payload of STSAT-1), MIRIS is the second Korean space telescope, and will be an important step towards the future of Korean space astronomy.

  • An image with infrared features and visible details is obtained by processing infrared and visible images. In this paper, a fusion method based on Laplacian pyramid and generative adversarial network is proposed to obtain high quality fusion images, termed as Laplacian-GAN. Firstly, the base and detail layers are obtained by decomposing the source images. Secondly, we utilize the Laplacian pyramid-based method to fuse these base layers to obtain more information of the base layer. Thirdly, the detail part is fused by a generative adversarial network. In addition, generative adversarial network avoids the manual design complicated fusion rules. Finally, the fused base layer and fused detail layer are reconstructed to obtain the fused image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can obtain state-of-the-art fusion performance in both visual quality and objective assessment. In terms of visual observation, the fusion image obtained by Laplacian-GAN algorithm in this paper is clearer in detail. At the same time, in the six metrics of MI, AG, EI, MS_SSIM, Qabf and SCD, the algorithm presented in this paper has improved by 0.62%, 7.10%, 14.53%, 12.18%, 34.33% and 12.23%, respectively, compared with the best of the other three algorithms.

  • An automatic freeway bus-only lane enforcement system was developed and assessed in a real-world environment. Observation of a bus-only lane on the Youngdong freeway, South Korea, revealed that approximately 99% of the vehicles violated the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane regulation. However, the current enforcement by the police not only exhibits a low enforcement rate, but also induces unnecessary safety and delay concerns. Since vehicles with six passengers or higher are permitted to enter freeway bus-only lanes, identifying the number of passengers in a vehicle is a core technology required for a freeway bus-only lane enforcement system. To that end, infrared cameras and the You Only Look Once (YOLOv5) deep learning algorithm were utilized. For assessment of the performance of the developed system, two environments, including a controlled test-bed and a real-world freeway, were used. As a result, the performances under the test-bed and the real-world environments exhibited 7% and 8% errors, respectively, indicating satisfactory outcomes. The developed system would contribute to an efficient freeway bus-only lane operations as well as eliminate safety and delay concerns caused by the current manual enforcement procedures.

  • In general, the anatomical location and number of parathyroid glands are well known, but they are often found in a variety of locations, making it difficult to find parathyroid glands during surgery. Besides Intra-thyroidal parathyroid adenoma is extremely rare case, and it is harder to identify in surgery. We encountered a 51-year-old patient with a thyroid nodule. The results of the additional blood test and the Tc-99m MIBI were combined to determine that the left lower lobe parathyroid adenoma was highly likely. This patient was treated with left thyroid lobectomy with parathyroid identification using Near-infrared (NIR) imaging. Afterwards, the biopsy confirmed that it was a parathyroid adenoma, and has since been monitored through outpatient observation without any problem. We present this rare case with a review of related literatures.

  • In space exploration, spectroscopic observation is useful for understanding objects' composition and physical properties. There are various methods for analyzing spectral data, and there are differences depending on the object and the wavelength. This paper introduces a method for analyzing visible & nearinfrared (VNIR) spectral data, which is mainly applied in lunar exploration. The main analysis methods include false color ratio image processing, reflectance pattern analysis, integrated band depth (IBD) processing, and continuum removal as preprocessing before analysis. These spectroscopic analysis methods help to understand the mineral properties of the lunar surface in the VNIR region and can be applied to other celestial bodies such as Mars.

  • MIRIS(Multi-purpose Infra-Red Imaging System) is the main payload of the STSAT-3(Korea Science and Technology Satellite. 3), which is being developed by KASI(Korea Astronomy & Space Institute). EOC(Earth Observation Camera), which is one of two infrared cameras in MIRIS, is the camera for observing infrared rays from the Earth in the range of $3{\sim}5{\mu}m$. The optical system of the EOC is a Cassegrain prescription with aspheric primary and secondary mirrors, and its aperture is 100mm. A ring type flexure supports the EOC primary mirror with pre-loading in order to withstand expected load due to the shock and vibration from the launcher. Here we attempt to use the same mechanism by which a retainer supports the lens. Through opto-mechanical analysis it was confirmed that the EOC primary mirror is effectively supported.

  • Pulse tube-type spaceborne cryocooler is widely used to cool down the infrared sensor of observation satellites. However, such cryocooler also generates micro-vibration which is the one of main sources to seriously affect the image quality during its on-orbit operation. Therefore, to comply with the mission requirement of high resolution observation satellite, additional technical efforts have been required. In this study, we proposed a spaceborne cryocooler passive vibration isolator using SMA mesh washer, which guarantees the structural safety of both the micro-vibration disturbance source and itself under harsh launch vibration loads without an additional holding mechanism and the micro-vibration isolation performance on orbit environment. To verify the micro-vibration isolation performance of the proposed vibration isolator, we performed the micro-vibration isolation measurement test using the dedicated micro-vibration measurement device proposed in this study.
