  • Recently, Korean government has introduced Multi Metric Indices (MMI) using various biocommunity information for aquatic ecosystem monitoring and ecosystem health assessment at the national level. MMI is a key tool in national ecosystem health assessment programs. The MMI consists of indices that respond to different target environmental factors, including environmental disturbance (e.g. nutrients, hydrological and hydraulic situation of site etc.). We used zooplankton community information collected from Korean lakes to estimate the availability of candidate zooplankton MMI indices that can be used to assess lake ecosystem health. First, we modified the candidate indices proposed by the U.S. EPA to suit Korean conditions. The modified indices were subjected to individual index suitability analysis, correlation analysis with environmental variables, and redundancy analysis among indices, and 19 indices were finally selected. Taxonomic diversity was suggested to be an important indicator for all three taxonomic groups (cladoceran, copepod, rotifer), on the other hand, the indices using biomass for large cladocerans and copepods, while the indices using abundance were suggested for small cladocerans and rotifers.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of export promotion programs (EPPs) on the export performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with a specific focus on the influence of EPPs for promising SMEs in the export market. Using data on SMEs provided by the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK), we conducted a fixed-effects model analysis from 2016 to 2019. Our study shows that EPPs have a positive and significant relationship with export intensity. Further analysis reveals that SMEs utilizing the financing support system provided by EPPs tend to improve their export growth and financial performance relative to their counterparts. While EPPs can assist SMEs with their internationalization efforts, their similarity and redundancy are recognized as potential limitations. This study complements the existing literature that has mainly focused on surveys and cross-sectional analysis by specifying the research subject to promising SMEs in export, and analyzing the effects of the export promotion program supported by IBK Industrial Bank. The results of this study are expected to provide implications for improving SMEs' export capabilities.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective memory reduction algorithm to reduce the amount of reference frame buffer and memory bandwidth in video encoder and decoder. In general video codecs, decoded previous frames should be stored and referred to reduce temporal redundancy. Recently, reference frames are recompressed for memory efficiency and bandwidth reduction between a main processor and external memory. However, these algorithms could hurt coding efficiency. Several algorithms have been proposed to reduce the amount of reference memory with minimum quality degradation. They still suffer from quality degradation with fixed-bit allocation. In this paper, we propose an adaptive block-based min-max quantization that considers local characteristics of image. In the proposed algorithm, basic process unit is $8{\times}8$ for memory alignment and apply an adaptive quantization to each $4{\times}4$ block for minimizing quality degradation. We found that the proposed algorithm can obtain around 1.7% BD-bitrate gain and 0.03dB BD-PSNR gain, compared with the conventional fixed-bit min-max algorithm with 37.5% memory saving.

  • In current printer industry, four or more colorants are added for color gamut extension because the gamut of printer is smaller than other devices. However, these additional colorants make a redundancy problem that several combinations of colorants reproduced same color stimulus in colorimetric inverse characterization process. Thus, we propose a method of colorimetric inverse characterization using color correlation between colorant's amount. First, for analyzing the combination of colorants which represent the same color stimulus, we estimate the color stimulus for all combination of colorants by Cellular Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer printer model. The combination of colorants which has higher color correlation factor comparing combinations of colorant around itself in color space is selected. It can reduced the color difference from the tetrahedral interpolation process which is estimation of the output value(colorants combination) for arbitrary input(color stimulus). The selected combinations of colorants and their color stimulus are stored to the lookup table. In experiment, the CMYKGO printer was used. As a result, the dark region of color gamut was extended and the color tone was more naturally represented.

  • Since vegetations are near the wavelength range in 700nm and have absorbent as well as reflective wavelength ranges, there is a much difference in terms of its reflection rate. There are currently many researches on vegetation index being conducted in order to apply the remote-sensing technology to vegetations rising their characteristics of absorbent and reflective wavelength ranges. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Perpendicular Vegetation Index (PVI) have been most commonly used. It is usually the evaporation, carbon-dioxide consumption, and chlorophyll density that represent the activity of vegetation, but chlorophyll density is the most commonly used among them. Since the red wavelength range used to obtain the NDVI and PVI has a strong extinction of chlorophyll, it is also useful to test chlorophyll density. The NDVI, in particular, is used to identify the vegetation conditions summarily, and thus, is suitable for initiative researches. Nevertheless, since these vegetation index produce mixed information of the Vegetation vigor and vegetation cover, it is essential to monitor a wavelength range that is independent from redundancy of the Vegetation vigor and vegetation cover. Although many vegetation indices have evaluated both the vegetation vigor and Vegetation cover simultaneously, this research intends to emphasize the utility of separable evaluations of the Vegetation vigor and Vegetation Cover rate through an experiment with grasses. As a result of evaluating vegetation index using spectral reflectance, a separable evaluation of the vegetation vigor and cover has been found more useful.

  • The oxidation ditch (OD) is one of the most widely used processes for treating municipal wastewater. However, the microbial communities in the OD systems have not been well characterized, and little information about the shift of bacterial community during the startup process of the OD systems is available. In this study, we investigated the bacterial community changes during the startup period (over 100 days) of a full-scale OD. The results showed that the bacterial community dramatically changed during the startup period. Similar to the activated sludge samples in other studies, Proteobacteria (accounting for 26.3%-48.4%) was the most dominant bacterial phylum in the OD system, but its relative abundance declined nearly 40% during the startup process. It was also found that Planctomycetes proliferated greatly (from 4.79% to 13.5%) and finally replaced Bacteroidetes as the second abundant phylum in the OD system. Specifically, some bacteria affiliated with genus Flavobacterium exhibited remarkable decreasing trends, whereas bacterial species belonging to the OD1 candidate division and Saprospiraceae family were found to increase during the startup process. Despite of the bacterial community shift, the organic matter, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the effluent were always in low concentrations, suggesting the functional redundancy of the bacterial community. Moreover, by comparing with the bacterial community in other municipal wastewater treatment bioreactors, some potentially novel bacterial species were found to be present in the OD system. Collectively, this study improved our understandings of the bacterial community structure and microbial ecology during the startup of a full-scale wastewater treatment bioreactor.

  • The United States will proceed with the effort to modernize the GPS system, and one of its main content is to provide L5 signal. L5 will be transmitted in a radio band reserved exclusively for aviation safety services. And, L5, in combination with L1, will improve the position accuracy via ionospheric correction and robustness via signal redundancy. However, The acquisition processing time of L5 takes longer than that of L1 as the code length of L5 is 10 times longer than that of L1. To reduce this acquisition processing time, a higher number of correlators in the aquisition module should be used. However, there is a problem that this causes increase in the complexity of the correlator configuration and the computation power. So, in this paper, we propose L5 signal tracking scheme using tracking results in the GPS L1/L5 receiver. The proposed scheme could reduce the hardware complexity as the GPS L5 signal acquisition module is not needed, and provide fast and stable tracking of L5 signal by aiding L1 tracking results such as PRN, the code phase synchronization, and the Doppler frequency. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through simulation results.

  • Mosaic is to make a big image by gathering lots of small materials having various colors. With advance of digital imaging techniques, photomosaic techniques using photos are widely used. In this paper, we presents an automatic photomosaic algorithm based on adaptive tiling and block matching. The proposed algorithm is composed of two processes: photo database generation and photomosaic generation. Photo database is a set of photos (or tiles) used for mosaic, where a tile is divided into $4{\times}4$ regions and the average RGB value of each region is the feature of the tile. Photomosaic generation is composed of 4 steps: feature extraction, adaptive tiling, block matching, and intensity adjustment. In feature extraction, the feature of each block is calculated after the image is splitted into the preset size of blocks. In adaptive tiling, the blocks having similar similarities are merged. Then, the blocks are compared with tiles in photo database by comparing euclidean distance as a similarity measure in block matching. Finally, in intensity adjustment, the intensity of the matched tile is replaced as that of the block to increase the similarity between the tile and the block. Also, a tile redundancy minimization scheme of adjacent blocks is applied to enhance the quality of mosaic photos. In comparison with Andrea mosaic software, the proposed algorithm outperforms in quantitative and qualitative analysis.

  • In a conventional method based on quadrature 2D Gator wavelets to extract iris features, the iris recognition is performed by a 256-byte iris code, which is computed by applying the Gabor wavelets to a given area of the iris. However, there is a code redundancy because the iris code is generated by basis functions without considering the characteristics of the iris texture. Therefore, the size of the iris code is increased unnecessarily. In this paper, we propose a new feature extraction algorithm based on the ICA (Independent Component Analysis) for a compact iris code. We implemented the ICA to generate optimal basis functions which could represent iris signals efficiently. In practice the coefficients of the ICA expansions are used as feature vectors. Then iris feature vectors are encoded into the iris code for storing and comparing an individual's iris patterns. Additionally, we introduce two methods to enhance the recognition performance of the ICA. The first is to reorganize the ICA bases and the second is to use a different ICA bases set. Experimental results show that our proposed method has a similar EER (Equal Error Rate) as a conventional method based on the Gator wavelets, and the iris code size of our proposed methods is four times smaller than that of the Gabor wavelets.

  • In order to manage water quality efficiently and systematically through TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load), the demand for the construction of spatial data for stream networks has increased for use with GIS-based water quality modeling, data management and spatial analysis. The objective of this study was to present an improved KRF (Korean Reach File) design as framework data for domestic stream networks to be used for various purposes in relation to the TMDL. In order to achieve this goal, the US EPA's RF (River Reach File) was initially reviewed. The improved design of the graphic and attribute data for the KRF based on the design of the EPA's RF was presented. To verify the results, the KRF was created for the Han River Basin. In total, 2,047 stream reaches were divided and the relevant nodes were generated at 2,048 points in the study area. The unique identifiers for each spatial object were input into the KRF without redundancy. This approach can serve as a means of linking the KRF with related database. Also, the enhanced topological information was included as attributes of the KRF. Therefore, the KRF can be used in conjunction with various types of network analysis. The utilization of KRF for water quality modeling, data management and spatial analysis as they pertain to the applicability of the TMDL should be conducted.
