Developing a Basic Framework for the Korean National Collection Policy (국가장서개발정책 기본모형 연구)

  • A more sophisticated library collection policy is required due to the changing information environment. Both traditional resources and diversified networked information resources are increasing continuously. The National Library of Korea should construct a systematic collection development policy in order to fulfill its mission. The purpose of this study is to develop a basic framework that is intended to improve the coverage of national collection. Examining previous studies and the national collection development policies of major advanced countries, a model consisting of four sub-models has been proposed. It includes hybrid collection, cooperative linking collection, collection evaluation, and a collection policy statement. Details of the sub-models and strategies are described.

  • The description of resources at collection-level is being recognised as an important component of information services that seek to provide integrated access to distributed resources. This research investigated the concept, necessities, and standards of collection level description which manages heterogeneous and distributed resources effectively. Also this research reviewed collection level description projects in other countries to show a new direction of subject access in digital libraries.

Garbage Collection Protocol of Fault Tolerance Information in Multi-agent Environments (멀티에이전트 환경에서 결함 포용 정보의 쓰레기 처리 기법)

  • Existing distributed systems have higher probability of failures occurrence than stand-alone system, so many fault tolerant techniques have been developed. Because of insufficient storage resulting from the increased fault tolerance information stored, the performance of system has been degraded. To avoid performance degradation, it needs delete useless fault tolerance information. In this paper, we propose a garbage collection algorithm for fault tolerance information. And we define and design the garbage collection agent for garbage collection of fault tolerance information, the information agent for management of fault tolerant data, and the facilitator agent for communication between agents. Also, we propose the garbage collection algorithm using the garbage collection agent. For rollback recovery, we use independent checkpointing protocol and sender based pessimistic message logging protocol. In our proposed garbage collection algorithm, the garbage collection, information, and facilitator agent is created with process, and the information agent constructs domain knowledge with its checkpoints and non-determistic events. And the garbage collection agent decides garbage collection time, and it deletes useless fault tolerance information in cooperation with the information and facilitator agent. For propriety of proposed garbage collection technique using agents, we compare domain knowledge of system that performs garbage collection after rollback recovery and domain knowledge of system that doesn't perform garbage collection.

A Trend Study on Collection Development Policy for Science and Technology Information Resources (과학기술정보 장서개발정책에 관한 동향연구)

  • World leading national science technology information institutes provide scientists with R&D information for increasing national competitiveness. Collection development policy is the guidelines for the science technology information institutes that identify information resources and connect them together to build an information network for supporting R&D. In order to draw main elements of the collection development policy for national level science and technology information institutes, this paper analyzed the policies of National Library of Medicine (NLM), British Library (BL), Canada Institute for Scientific and Technological Information (CISTI), and Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information(KISTI). The results of this study can be used as the guidelines for the science and technology information institutes for establishing collection development policy.

  • The modern society is one of knowledge and information, and the library is one of the important routes through which they are obtained. But the collection in the library, from the onset of its creation and the process of accumulation, could only be bent and biased due to the prejudice and distortion, inevitably acting as an agent that mires the essence of the library as a distribution channel for knowledge and information of modern society. This study is the discussion about the necessity, main assignment and the methodology of library collection study. The collection study needs to focus on the process of accumulating the collection in the library to track down the Process of becoming biased.

An Analytical Study on the Quantitative and Qualitative Evaluation of Research Library Collection (연구도서관 장서의 양적 질적 평가에 관한 분석적 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to bring out the most reasonable and feasible evaluation methods of research library collection in Korea. At the very outset, writer tried to define the purpose and the necessity of collection evaluation. Writer described a collection evaluation is to gain the data for decision making on selection policy, weeding and storage project, and explained it is one of the procedures of a collection development system operation of being explained as repeated three procedures through a collection development plan, an implimentation of the set plan(selection process) and a collection evaluation. Writer also pointed out the fact many libraries in Korea are apt to by pass or overlook this important process. Writer then defined the criteria of a collection evaluation as the measurement of the proportion of library holding's capability to meet users' demands and that of the degree of total collection's utilization. Writer introduced and analysed seven existing collection evaluation methods and concluded the method by a survey of users' needs and opinion and the method by a circulation survey are the most feasible and reasonable methods that can be applied. Writer also added that using above two evaluation methods together can enhance the effectiveness of collection evaluation.

  • In Digital Contents Computing Environment, information such as register, cache memory, and network information are hard to make certain of a real-time collection because such information collection are easily modified or disappeared. Thus, a collection of information is one of important step for computer forensics system on Digital Contents computing. In this paper, we propose information collection module, which collects variable information of server system based on memory mapping in real-time.

  • The core competence of the library originates from the huge analog collections and the high-quality digital contents. And when the interaction between two entities strengthens, it will be able to secure the identity as the time capsule and the gateway of knowledge information. Based on these prerequisites, this research analyzed the spectra of digital collection development and presented the various strategies about license of the electronic journals, internet collection development, institutional repository. When the library does not concentrate in digital collection development, the position as information common will be under losing.

Improvement of an Identified Slot Sacn-Based Active RFID Tag Collection Algorithm (인식 슬롯 스캔 기반 능동형 RFID 태그 수집 알고리즘 개선)

  • This paper proposes a modified tag collection algorithm that improves the drawback of the identified slot scan-based tag collection algorithm presented in a previous paper to improve the tag collection performance in active RFID systems. The previous identified slot scan-based tag collection algorithm is optimized in situations where all the tags store the fixed size of data, so it could not result in a good performance improvement with tags having the variable size of data. The improved tag collection algorithm proposed in this paper first collects the slot size information required for the data transmission from each tag via the identified slot scan phase, and then performs the tag collection phase using the information, which resolves the problem of the previous identified slot scan-based tag collection algorithm. The simulation results for performance evaluation showed that the proposed tag collection algorithm resulted in the almost same tag collection performance as the previous algorithm when all the tags have the same size of data and led a large improvement of the tag collection performance in ISO/IEC 18000-7 unlike the previous algorithm when each tag has a random size of data.

  • This is a preliminary study on establishing the optimized strategic plan for KISTI's collection. In this paper, major foreign and domestic information centers and the current status and usage of KISTI's collection are analyzed. Also included are the suggestion of a strategic solution for optimizing KISTI's collection and the discussion regarding KISTI's roles and strategies.
