  • Background & Objectives: Recently, problems such as in-school violence of teenagers, gang fight, habitual drinking, smoking, running away from home and group isolation can be regarded as the most fundamental causes of teenagers' deviation. It is said that such fundamental causes are originated from their home, the base for the psychological and behavioral development. Methods: In this study, the data for 3,188 students studying in the 3rd grade at middle school, which have been obtained from the second year survey for the panel of the 2nd grade students in 2004 by to Korea Youth Panel Survey, have been used for the analysis of the study. Results: According to the result of the study, there seems to be no difference between two genders for differences of average values. Regarding the analysis of correlation coefficients between such related variables as domestic violence, self-control, self-worth, self-trust and family relationship (sociability), and teenagers' deviation, When variables increase, teenagers' deviation decreases. Regarding the relationship between domestic violence and teenagers' deviation, physical violence is more related than lingual violence. The relationship between self-control and teenagers' deviation is the highest. By studying the deviation of teenagers exposed to domestic violence and carrying out the regression analysis, physical violence influences, teenagers' deviation was greater. As self-control, self-worth and family relationship(sociability) increase, teenagers' deviation decreases. Regarding the analytic results of this study, the experience of domestic violence seems to influence teenagers' deviation greatly. Among various types of domestic violence, physical violence is analyzed to influence teenagers' deviation greatly. Self-control, self-worth and family relationship(sociability) increase, teenagers' deviation decreases. Conclusions: In order to prevent teenagers' deviation and decrease the second conviction rate, it is necessary to provide a method of decreasing the domestic violence. It is necessary for schools and local communities to provide social support for teenagers.

  • Background: The Cox maze-III procedure is considered as the most effective surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation. Because this procedure takes a long time and it complicates the concomitant cardiac surgery, some surgeons perform a left atrial maze procedure or pulmonary vein isolation only to reduce the operation time. This study was performed to evaluate how the modified procedures, with using cut-and-sew techniques, can influence the treatment of atrial fibrillation. Material and Method: Between Feb 1999 and June 2005, 40 patients (17 males and 23 females) with organic heart disease and atrial fibrillation underwent the Cox maze-III procedure (23), the left atrial maze procedure (10) or pulmonary vein isolation (7). The cut-an-sew technique was used to ablate the atrial wall, but cryoablation was used instead of the cut-and-sew technique for the coronary sinus and the inferior wall between the pulmonary vein and the mitral annulus. Result: After a mean follow-up period of $50.0{\pm}21.6$ months, all (100%) of the 23 patients who underwent the Cox maze-III procedure had regular sinus or atrial rhythm conversion, and 7(70%) of 10 with a left atrial maze procedure and 4(57.1%) of 7 with pulmonary vein isolation had regular sinus or atrial rhythm conversion (p=0.002). Conclusion: To obtain a high conversion rate from atrial fibrillation to a regular sinus rhythm or a regular atrial rhythm, the standard Cox maze-III procedure should be performed in both atria. The limited modified procedures like the left atrial maze procedure or pulmonary vein isolation may reduce the cure rate of atrial fibrillation.

  • For the purpose of comparing the shear bond strengths of pit and fissure sealants, and finding out the more efficient method of tooth surface treatment when the etched surface is contaminaed by saliva or moisture, an experiment was performed on 3 types of pit and fissure sealants. 120 extracted human molars were divided into 3 groups, each of which was composed of 40 specimens sealed with Helioseal, Teethmate-F and Fuji III respectively. And each groups was again divided into 4 subgroups according to tooth surface treatment. The shear bond strengths of each groups and subgroup was measured and statistically analyzed. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Shear bond strengths of nonfluoridated resin sealant, Helioseal were shown to be higher than those of fluoridated resin sealant, Teethmate-F, but, not significantly different. 2. Shear bond strengths of GI sealant, Fuji III were to be markedly lower than those of two resin sealants. 3. When there is moisture contamination, applying primer under sealant(Group IV) results in a significantly stronger bond strength of sealant to enamel than when using sealant alone(Group II) in case of all sealants. 4. When there is no moisture contamination, using primer under sealant (Group III) results in bond strength equivalent to bond strength on using sealant alone (Group I). 5. Based on the results above, it was demonstrated that the bond of sealant to tooth surface is greatly affected by saliva contamination and that the complete tooth isolation method should be fully emphasized. The application of primer is recommended when performing sealant under the environment very susceptible to saliva contamination.

  • PURPOSES : This study examines the performance changes of road networks according to the strength of a disaster, and proposes a method for estimating the quantitative resilience according to the road-network performance changes and damage scale. This study also selected high-influence road sections, according to disasters targeting the road network, and aimed to analyze their hazard resilience from the network aspect through a scenario analysis of the damage recovery after a disaster occurred. METHODS : The analysis was conducted targeting Sejong City in South Korea. The disaster situation was set up using the TransCAD and VISSIM traffic-simulation software. First, the study analyzed how road-network damage changed the user's travel pattern and travel time, and how it affected the complete network. Secondly, the functional aspects of the road networks were analyzed using quantitative resilience. Finally, based on the road-network performance change and resilience, priority-management road sections were selected. RESULTS : According to the analysis results, when a road section has relatively low connectivity and low traffic, its effect on the complete network is insignificant. Moreover, certain road sections with relatively high importance can suffer a performance loss from major damage, for e.g., sections where bridges, tunnels, or underground roads are located, roads where no bypasses exist or they exist far from the concerned road, including entrances and exits to suburban areas. Relatively important roads have the potential to significantly degrade the network performance when a disaster occurs. Because of the high risk of delays or isolation, they may lead to secondary damage. Thus, it is necessary to manage the roads to maintain their performance. CONCLUSIONS : As a baseline study to establish measures for traffic prevention, this study considered the performance of a road network, selected high-influence road sections within the road network, and analyzed the quantitative resilience of the road network according to scenarios. The road users' passage-pattern changes were analyzed through simulation analysis using the User Equilibrium model. Based on the analysis results, the resilience in each scenario was examined and compared. Sections where a road's performance loss had a significant influence on the network were targeted. The study results were judged to become basic research data for establishing response plans to restore the original functions and performance of the destroyed and damage road networks, and for selecting maintenance priorities.

  • The purpose of this study is to review and overcome the limits of the existing design wave model applied to such waters as those located inside bays or near islands where the impact of wind influenced waves are more dominant, due to the nature of topographic isolation, than the influence of direct waves coming from the open sea. Although the existing model for an inside bay design wave is excellent for considering wind factors and very adaptable to topographically complicated areas compared to other models, it is difficult to show the wave diffractions and reflections caused by large scale structures or topographic features in the region. The study examined the various methods capable of taking into account wave diffraction, the angle of wave reflection, and changes in water depth. As a result of applying the modified design wave model to the target situation (inside bay or near island areas), it was found that the reliability of the design wave height around marine structures was improved, compared to the existing models. Therefore, it is fair to predict that the new model could provide more accurate design waves in the design of marine structures.

  • In general, open trenches or in-filled trenches have been used to isolate transmitting of vibration. Recently alternative methods, in which various materials are used for wall barriers have been proposed and performed in several sites. Although the effects of these methods are verified, resonable and qualitative evaluation methods have not yet been conducted. It may be because many factors, such as the characteristics of vibration sources, ground condition, and parameters of wall barrier are coupled complicatedly. In this study, a series of centrifugal modelings were conducted in order to examine the evaluation method of a vibration wall barrier when point load transmits to the surface. The experiments were performed with different stiffness of wall barriers and different depths of installations. Using the results obtained from tests, effects of those variables on the efficiency of vibration barrier were analyzed. Through this investigation we observed vibration transmission of under ground, and verified the applicability of ball dropping system which was developed in this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore bullying among senior women at a senior center. Using ethnographic research technique, we examined the process in which members of the senior center engaged in and responded to bullying. Purposive sampling method was used to choose a senior center as the subject of this study. Within the center, 16 senior women participated in the study. In-depth interviews and participatory research methods were used to collect data. We analyzed the transcripts of the interviews based on the ethnographic analysis method presented by Spradley (1979). Themes that emerged from these participatory research and interviews include: members of the senior center creating loners, people being bullied causing damages to the group, taking actions to respond to bullying, and failing to solve the bullying problems. First, the victims of bullying became loners with no one to rely on through other members' verbal attacks, discrimination, isolation, and stopping the victim to use the senior center. Second, the victims were under attack but also caused troubles at the senior center and harmed others at the same time. Third, while engaging in bullying, senior women attempted to deal with bullying problems in many ways. These attempts include: avoiding the conflict, withstanding, attempting to mediating, and so on. Finally, bullying remained to be a recurring phenomenon at the senior center. New victims of bullying continuously appeared and the influence of bullying was felt not only within the senior center but outside as well. Based on the findings of this study, we suggest that practitioners and researchers take into account factors that affect bullying among senior women.

  • The main objective of this study was to develop a concept of service marketing promotion in nursing that is derived from the concepts of service marketing theory. This research was a descriptive study, at the factor isolation level. The principle of concept derivation suggested by Walker and Avant (1988) and the Hybrid model suggested by Schwarz-Barcott and Kim (1993) were employed as the research method. The data were collected from December, 1997 to April. 1998 at a large general hospital located in Seoul. The procedures of this study were as follows: First. at the theoretical phase: the meaning, attributes, and definition of service marketing promotion were identified through an extensive review of the literature. Second, at the empirical phase: fieldwork was done to identify the promotional activities and events in nursing. Top nurse managers from 4 units (Director of Nursing, Head nurses of inpatient nursing unit, outpatient nursing unit. and home care nursing unit) were interviewed and the content of the interview was analyzed to identify the meaning and attributes of promotion in nursing. Other methods such as brochures and other audio-visual materials which were relevant to nursing promotion were used to supplement the interviews. Finally, the results of the theoretical and empirical analyses were intergrated to develop a concept of service marketing in nursing practice. A final definition of service marketing promotion in nursing was identified as follows. 1. Promotion as a marketing function in nursing service is concerned with communication to target markets on all information related to nursing service in order to satisfy the objectives of both a nursing service organization and the target markets. 2. The goals of nursing service promotion include: 1) increasing visibility of nursing services and delivering the information on nursing services, 2) affirming the value of nursing services, so it can contribute to formulation of reimbursement policy for nursing services. 3) advancing the general image of the nursing profession and nursing services. 4) achieving and attaining a desirable positioning for nurses among health care professionals. and 5) creating and stimulating the demand for nursing services. 3. In order to obtain these goals it is necessary to provide information on nursing services, to persuade target markets. to remind them about nursing services. and to establish a collaborative relationship with related departments. 4. The tools used to carry out the above functions of promotion in nursing are the providing nursing services, public relations and publicity. QA of nursing, advertising, and sales promotion. 5. The target markets of nursing service include the nursing customer markets. the internal markets, the influence markets. the recruitment markets. the supplier markets. and the nursing referral markets. In conclusion, the concept of promotion in other service marketing areas can be applied to the promotion of nursing service marketing. The promotion of nursing service is more than just effective communication in nursing service. it is the effective use of the concepts of service marketing promotion. Promotion of nursing service will contribute to create and expand nursing services.
