This paper presents the development of transfer function accounting for cross-anisotropic behavior of aggregate base material for the pavement thickness design. The stress distributions predicted by nonlinear cross-anisotropic finite element program were realistic by eliminating excessive tensile stress at the bottom of the base layer and the critical pavement responses predicted by nonlinear cross-anisotropic model are higher than those predicted by linear or nonlinear isotropic models (Kim, 2004, Kim et at., 2005). Since the previously developed transfer functions such as Asphalt Institute and Chevron models, etc. were based on the critical responses obtained from linear isotropic model, those equations are not appropriate for the thickness design nonlinear cross-anisotropic base behavior. Therefore, the development of usable transfer functions for nonlinear cross-anisotropic model is ever more important. When the newly developed transfer functions were compared with AASHTO method for the thickness design, the newly developed transfer functions produce approximately 25mm reduced UAB thickness in AASHTO thickness design and this illustrates that linear isotropic model results in more conservative pavement design.
Rail support failure is inevitably subjected to track geometric deformations. Due to the randomness and evolvements of track irregularities, it is naturally a hard work to grasp the trajectories of dynamic responses of railway systems. This work studies the influence of rail fastener failure on dynamic behaviours of wheel/rail interactions and the railway tracks by jointly considering the effects of track random irregularities. The failure of rail fastener is simulated by setting the stiffness and damping of rail fasteners to be zeroes in the compiled vehicle-track coupled model. While track random irregularities will be transformed from the PSD functions using a developed probabilistic method. The novelty of this work lays on providing a method to completely reveal the possible responses of railway systems under jointly excitation of track random irregularities and rail support failure. The numerical results show that rail fastener failure has a great influence on both the wheel/rail interactions and the track vibrations if the number of rail fastener failure is over three. Besides, the full views of time-dependent amplitudes and probabilities of dynamic indices can be clearly presented against different failing status.
An approach is developed for parametric investigation of the influence of the surface roughness on thermohydrodynamic analysis with film conditions which systemically occur in journal bearings. A parametric investigation is performed for predicting the bearing behaviors such as pressure and temperature distributions in lubricating films between the stationary and moving surfaces determined by absorbed layers and interfaces on the statistical method for rough surface with Gaussian distribution. The layers expressing the effects of surface roughness are expressed as functions of the standard deviations (${\sigma}$) of each surface and surface orientation (j) to explain the flow patterns between both rough surfaces. The coupled effect of surface roughness and shear zone dependency on hydrodynamic pressure and temperature has been found by solving the present model in non-contact mode and contact mode, respectively.
The residual fracture toughness of post-fire normal-strength concrete subjected up to $600^{\circ}C$ is considered by the wedge splitting test. The initial fracture toughness $K_I^{ini}$ and the critical fracture toughness $K_I^{un}$ could be calculated experimentally. Their difference is donated as the cohesive fracture toughness $K_I^c$ which is caused by the distribution of cohesive stress on the fracture process zone. A comparative study on determining the residual fracture toughness associated with three bi-linear functions of the cohesive stress distribution, i.e. Peterson's softening curve, CEB-FIP Model 1990 softening curve and Xu's softening curve, using an analytical method is presented. It shows that different softening curves have no significant influence on the fracture toughness. Meanwhile, comparisons between the experimental and the analytical calculated critical fracture toughness values further prove the validation of the double-K fracture model to the post-fire concrete specimens.
Bridge hangers, such as those in suspension and cable-stayed bridges, suffer from cumulative fatigue damage caused by dynamic loads (e.g., cyclic traffic and wind loads) in their service condition. Thus, the identification of damage to hangers is important in preserving the service life of the bridge structure. This study develops a new method for condition assessment of bridge hangers. The tension force of the bridge and the damages in the element level can be identified using the Bayesian optimization method. To improve the number of observed data, the additional mass method is combined the Bayesian optimization method. Numerical studies are presented to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. The influence of different acquisition functions, which include expected improvement (EI), probability-of-improvement (PI), lower confidence bound (LCB), and expected improvement per second (EIPC), on the identification of damage to the bridge hanger is studied. Results show that the errors identified by the EI acquisition function are smaller than those identified by the other acquisition functions. The identification of the damage to the bridge hanger with various types of boundary conditions and different levels of measurement noise are also studied. Results show that both the severity of the damage and the tension force can be identified via the proposed method, thereby verifying the robustness of the proposed method. Compared to the genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and nonlinear least-square method (NLS), the Bayesian optimization (BO) performs best in identifying the structural damage and tension force.
The higher order shear deformable model and an exact analytical method is used for analytical bending analysis of a cylindrical shell subjected to mechanical loads, in this work. The shell is modelled using sinusoidal bivariate shear strain theory, and the static governing equations are derived using changes in virtual work. The eigenvalue-eigenvector method is used to exactly solve the governing equations for a constrained cylindrical shell The proposed kinematic relation decomposes the radial displacement into bending, shearing and stretching functions. The main advantage of the method presented in this work is the study of the effect of clamping constraints on the local stresses at the ends. Stress, strain, and deformation analysis of shells through thickness and length.
In this article, the semi-analytical method was used to analyze the nonlinear dynamic stability and vibration analysis of sandwich shallow spherical shells (SSSS). The SSSS was considered as functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composites (FG-CNTRC) with three new patterns of FG-CNTRC. The governing equation was obtained and discretized utilizing the Galerkin method by implementing the von Kármán-Donnell nonlinear strain-displacement relations. The nonlinear dynamic stability was analyzed by means of the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Then the Budiansky-Roth criterion was employed to obtain the critical load for the dynamic post-buckling. The approximate solution for the deflection was represented by suitable mode functions, which consisted of the three modes of transverse nonlinear oscillations, including one symmetrically and two asymmetrical mode shapes. The influences of various geometrical characteristics and material parameters were studied on the nonlinear dynamic stability and vibration response. The results showed that the order of layers had a significant influence on the amplitude of vibration and critical dynamic buckling load.
Live load data in domestic office buildings have been collected in a systematic manner. Based on surveyed data, equivalent uniformly distributed load intensities, which produce the same load effect as the actual spatially varying, live load, have been obtained for various structural members (such as slab, beam, column, etc. ). Influence surface method has been employed to compute load effects under real live load, including beam moment, slab moment as well as axial force in column. The results have been examined to find probabilistic characteristics and relationship between influence area and load intensity (or coefficient of variation). The results were also compared with other survey results and found to be reasonable. Based on the probabilistic load models obtained, the lifetime extreme values have been analyzed and compared with current design loads. Tentative equations applicable to decide more rational design loads are also suggested as functions of influence area.
Vibration investigation of fluid-filled three layered cylindrical shells is studied here. A cylindrical shell is immersed in a fluid which is a non-viscous one. Shell motion equations are framed first order shell theory due to Love. These equations are partial differential equations which are usually solved by approximate technique. Robust and efficient techniques are favored to get precise results. Employment of the wave propagation approach procedure gives birth to the shell frequency equation. Use of acoustic wave equation is done to incorporate the sound pressure produced in a fluid. Hankel's functions of second kind designate the fluid influence. Mathematically the integral form of the Lagrange energy functional is converted into a set of three partial differential equations. It is also exhibited that the effect of frequencies is investigated by varying the different layers with constituent material. The coupled frequencies changes with these layers according to the material formation of fluid-filled FG-CSs. Throughout the computation, it is observed that the frequency behavior for the boundary conditions follow as; clamped-clamped (C-C), simply supported-simply supported (SS-SS) frequency curves are higher than that of clamped-simply (C-S) curves. Expressions for modal displacement functions, the three unknown functions are supposed in such way that the axial, circumferential and time variables are separated by the product method. Computer software MATLAB codes are used to solve the frequency equation for extracting vibrations of fluid-filled.
A response surface method(RSM) is utilized for structural optimization and implemented on a parametric CAD platform. Once an approximation of the performance function is made, no formal design sensitivity analysis is necessary. The approximation gives the designer the sensitivity information and furthermore intuition on the performance functions. The scheme for the design of experiment chosen for the RSM has a large influence on the accuracy of converged solutions and the amount of computation. The D-optimal design criterion as implemented in this paper is found efficient for the structural optimization. The program is developed on a parametric CAD platform and tested using several shape design problems of such as a torque arm and a belt clip. It is observed that the RSM used provides a faster convergence than other approximation methods for design sensitivity.
