Computational simulation has been performed to design optimally the filtration system for IGCC pilot plant. It was analyzed how the different inflow pattern influences the flow field and the particle behavior in a filter vessel. The particle loading onto the filter surface lowers significantly and decreases dramatically with particle size when the dusty gas flows into the filter vessel with a shroud tube through a tangential inlet setup tangentially on the vessel outer wall. However, the particle loading is considerably high when the dusty gas enters the filter vessel through a normal inlet setup vertically on the vessel top wall, and the decrease of the particle loading with particle size is not steeper compared with the tangential inflow pattern.
This study shows the assessment methodology for the water resources of subsurface dams. The study area is SSangcheon subsurface dam. It is at the estuary of SSangcheon watershed forming the unconfined alluvial aquifer. there are several candidate area which are geologically similar to it at East coast. The groundwater level was computed by a 2-D FDM model, where the watershed discharge is the input as the infiltration term. The baseflow computed as the mean value of 3 watershed dischrge model is $0.5m^3/sec$. And considering the inflow near the baseflow as the dry season inflow, The groundwater level according to the change of inflow and pumping rate was computed. Specifically, Using the real pumping rate $28000m^3/day$ which is equal to the supply amount of drinking water to Sokcho city, The inflow which induce the descended groundwater level to the bottom of aquifer or the ascended groundwater level that cause the surface flow was eatimated. The simulation for increased pumping rate and additional well construction to increase the water resources, was executed. And at the extreme dry season, available pumping rate was estimated.
The permeability coefficient is an essential parameter for the study of seepage flow in fractured rock mass. This paper discusses the feasibility and application value of using readily available RQD (rock quality index) data to estimate mine water inflow and grouting quantity. Firstly, the influence of different fracture frequencies on permeability in a unit area was explored by combining numerical simulation and experiment, and the relationship between fracture frequencies and pressure and flow velocity at the monitoring point in fractured rock mass was obtained. Then, the stochastic function generation program was used to establish the flow analysis model in fractured rock mass to explore the relationship between flow velocity, pressure and analyze the universal law between fracture frequency and permeability. The concepts of fracture width and connectivity are introduced to modify the permeability calculation formula and grouting formula. Finally, based on the on-site grouting water control example, the rock mass quality index is used to estimate the mine water inflow and the grouting quantity. The results show that it is feasible to estimate the fracture frequency and then calculate the permeability coefficient by RQD. The relationship between fracture frequency and RQD is in accordance with exponential function, and the relationship between structure surface frequency and permeability is also in accordance with exponential function. The calculation results are in good agreement with the field monitoring results, which verifies the rationality of the calculation method. The relationship between the rock mass RQD index and the rock mass permeability established in this paper can be used to invert the mechanical parameters of the rock mass or to judge the permeability and safety of the rock mass by using the mechanical parameters of the rock mass, which is of great significance to the prediction of mine water inflow and the safety evaluation of water inrush disaster management.
The most important parameters of the Muskingum method, widely used in hydrologic river routing, are the storage coefficient and the weighting factor. The Muskingum method does not consider the lateral inflow from the upstream to the downstream, but the lateral inflow actually occurs due to the rainfall on the watershed. As a result, it is very difficult to estimate the storage coefficient and the weighting factor by using the actual data of upstream and downstream. In this study, the flow without the lateral inflow was calculated from the river flow through the hydraulic flood routing by using the HEC-RAS one-dimensional unsteady flow model, and the method of the storage coefficient and the weighting factor calculation is presented. Considering that the storage coefficient relates to the travel time, the empirical travel time formulas used in the establishment of the domestic river basin plan were applied as the storage coefficient, and the simulation results were compared and analyzed. Finally, we have developed a formula for calculating the travel time considering the flow rate, and proposed a method to perform flood routing by updating the travel time according to the inflow change. The rise and fall process of the flow rate, the peak flow rate, and the peak time are well simulated when the travel time in consideration of the flow rate is applied as the storage coefficient.

Taipei 101 Tower, which has 101 stories with height of 508 m, is located in Taipei where typhoons and earthquakes commonly occur. It is currently the second tallest building in the world. Therefore, the dynamic performance of the super-tall building under strong wind actions requires particular attentions. In this study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) integrated with a new inflow turbulence generator and a new sub-grid scale (SGS) model was conducted to simulate the wind loads on the super-tall building. Three-dimensional finite element model of Taipei 101 Tower was established and used to evaluate the wind-induced responses of the high-rise structure based on the simulated wind forces. The numerical results were found to be consistent with those measured from a vibration monitoring system installed in the building. Furthermore, the equivalent static wind loads on the building, which were computed by the time-domain and frequency-domain analysis, respectively, were in satisfactory agreement with available wind tunnel testing results. It has been demonstrated through the validation studies that the numerical framework presented in this paper, including the recommended SGS model, the inflow turbulence generation technique and associated numerical treatments, is a useful tool for evaluation of the wind loads and wind-induced responses of tall buildings.
Wind environment in urban residential areas is an important index to consider when evaluating the living environment. However, due to the complexity of the flow field in residential areas, it is difficult to specify the correct inflow boundary conditions in the large eddy simulation (LES). In this paper, the weighted amplitude wave superposition (WAWS) is adopted to simulate the fluctuating velocity data, which satisfies the desired target wind field. The fluctuating velocity data are given to the inlet boundary of the LES by developing an UDF script, which is implemented into the FLUENT. Then, two numerical models - the empty numerical wind tunnel model and the numerical wind tunnel model with spires and roughness elements are established based on the wind tunnel experiment to verify the present method. Finally, the turbulence generation approach presented in this paper is used to carry out a numerical simulation on the wind environment in an urban residential area in Lisbon. The computational results are compared with the wind tunnel experimental data, showing that the numerical results in the LES have a good agreement with the experimental results, and the simulated flow field with the inlet fluctuations can generate a reasonable turbulent wind field. It also shows that strong wind velocities and turbulent kinetic energy occur at the passageways, which may affect the comfort of people in the residential neighborhood, and the small wind velocities and vortexes appear at the leeward corners of buildings, which may affect the spreading of the pollutants.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality(TCEQ) WAM(Water Availability Modeling) System consists of the generalized Water Rights Analysis Package(WRAP) river/reservoir system water management simulation model, 22 sets of WRAP hydrology and water rights input files for the 23 river basins of Texas, geographic information system tools, and other supporting databases. The WRAP/WAM modeling system, as routinely applied since the late 1990s, has not included consideration of water quality. Recently developed WRAP-SALT(Water Rights Analysis Package) is designed primarily for computing concentration frequency statistics and supply reliability indices at locations of interest in a river system for alternative water development and management scenarios. Though motivated primarily by natural salt pollution, WRAP-SALT water quality modeling features are applicable to essentially any conservative water quality constituent. The Brazos River studies discussed in this paper focus on total dissolved solids, though the available observed data also includes chloride and sulfate which can be modeled as individual constituents. The WRAP-SALT salinity input file contains loads or concentrations of salinity inflows during each month of the hydrologic period-of-analysis and reservoir storage at the beginning of the simulation. The WRAP-SALT model computes salt loads and concentrations for each control point of a river/reservoir system for inflows and outflows during the month and end-of-month reservoir storage for each month of the hydrologic period-of-analysis, for given loads entering the system. River reaches connect control points. The mass balance algorithms proceed from upstream to downstream, with outflow from one river reach contributing to inflow to the next downstream reach. In a given month, for each control point in sequence, the inflow loads are first computed. Loads and concentrations of outflows and reservoir storage at the control point are then determined. Complete mixing during the month is assumed at locations without reservoir storage.

To numerically simulate aerodynamics of rotor-airframe interaction in a rigorous manner, we need to solve the Navier-Stokes system for a rotor-airframe combination as a whole. This often imposes a serious computational burden since rotating blades and a stationary body have to be simultaneously dealt with. An efficient alternative is to adopt a momentum source method in which the action of rotor is approximated as momentum source over a rotor disc plane in a stationary computational domain. This makes the simulation much simpler. For unsteady simulation, the instantaneous momentum sources are assigned only to a portion of disk plane corresponding to blade passage. The momentum source is obtained by using blade element theory with dynamic inflow model. Computations are carried out for the simple rotor-airframe model (the Georgia Tech model) and the results of the simulation are compared with those of the full Navier-Stokes simulation with moving mesh system for rotor and with experimental data. It is shown that the present simulation yields results as good as those of the full Navier-Stokes simulation.

This paper analyzes the relation between fire shutters and fire spread by conducting fire simulation on inner space with fire shutters. Using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a commercial fire simulation software, the simulation is done on an ideal inner robby, where fire size and the open/close of fire shutters are varied. Our simulation environment can derive significant fire parameters such as temperature variation of fire room walls and entrances of refuge stairs, variation of carbon dioxide, and soot spread. According to the simulation results, temperature and carbon dioxide distribution in refuge stairs have little dependence on vent open or close, but the part close of fire shutters blocks soot inflow to refuge stairs.
Fully three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulation calculations of the flow past 2D cavity are conducted to study the purging of neutrally buoyant or dense miscible contaminants introduced instantaneously inside the cavity. The length to depth ratio(L/D) is 2 and Reynolds number based on the depth is 3,360. Fully developed turbulent inflow are fed at the inlet from precursor simulation of channel flow. Mean flow pattern and unsteady features are investigated based on the experimental data of Pereira and Sousa. From the study of mass exchange processes, it is found that the mechanism of removal of the contaminant is very different between the non-buoyant and buoyant cases. In the buoyant case, internal wave motion which interacts with a strong cavity vortex is dominant in the ejection mechanism of the contaminants.
