This numerical study investigates the effects of the size of the natural smoke vent area (10% and 1% of the floor area) and the location of the fire source (i.e., at the side and center of the stage) on the temperature distribution in the compartment and velocity distribution and mass flow rate of flow through a natural smoke vent for a reduced-scale model of a theater stage. Then, the mass flow rate of outflow through the natural smoke vent in the event of a fire for a real-scale theater stage was examined. The case with the larger natural smoke vent area and central fire source location showed lower temperature distributions and higher mass flow rates of outflow and inflow than the case with the smaller natural smoke vent area and side fire source location. The trends of the temperature distributions were closely related to those of the mass flow rates for the outflow and inflow. Additionally, the case with the larger natural smoke vent area and central fire source location exhibited the most non-uniform flow velocity distribution in all cases tested. A bidirectional flow, in which the outflow and inflow occur simultaneously, was observed through the natural smoke vent. In the event of a fire situation in a real-scale theater stage, it was predicted that the case with the larger natural smoke vent area and central fire source location would have a mass flow rate of outflow that is 43.53 times higher than that of the case with the smaller natural smoke vent area and side fire source location. The present results indicate that the natural smoke vent location should be determined by considering the location in a theater stage where a fire can occur.

In the long-term, most tunnels suffer from the increase in ground water inflow and in pore water pressure on the lining. To reduce such hydraulic effect, generally grouting methods are adopted. In this paper effective grouting design is proposed based on numerical simulation. To investigate the optimal grouting layout, factors such as relative permeability, grouting thickness, and distance from the lining are considered. The results are analysed in terms of pore water pressure, inflow rate, and earth pressure. It is revealed that the pore water pressure has increased with a decrease in grout permeability, an increase in grouting thickness and an increase in grouting distance. Meanwhile the inflow rate has decreased with a decrease in grout permeability and is inversely proportional to grouting thickness. Effective grouting design guideline are proposed based on this study.
In Jinhae-Masan bay, a typical semi-dosed bay in Korea, the water quality is severely deteriorated because of the dosed topographic character and the inflow of nutrients from the land. There have been attempts to apply a water quality model dealing with the entrophication phenomenon and the oxygen-deficient mass in the bay in summer, but there have been few examples of models that have considered the phenomenon of stratification in the proper order, and then it is performed the model of water quality. Therefore, this study collected and analyzed the pre-observed water temperature data from Jinhae-Masan bay in summer and then constructed a density model using the topographic heat accumulation effect and inflow from the river to examine the temperature stratification. The simulation results show that this model could demonstrate the temperature stratification in the Jinhae-Masan bay very well.
Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.
An infiltration storage can be installed as a method of reducing runoff from catchment and increasing stream flow during the dry period by recharging groundwater. However, there is no proper model and method that can be used to design storage capacity of an infiltration storage in Korea. The purpose of the study is to evaluate capacities of infiltration storages planned on Jeju-do in Korea by modifying Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). The basic equations for the infiltration storage are same as those of the infiltration trench used in MIDUSS. Infiltration rates of the infiltration storages were first measured by double ring infiltrometers, and then the modified model was applied to evaluate adequacy for the capacities of three infiltration storages planned on Jeju-do in Korea. The application results show that the two infiltration storages with higher infiltration rates have adequate capacities to infiltrate the total water inflow to the storages. However, the other infiltration storage with lower infiltration rates has not sufficient capacity to infiltrate the total water inflow to the storage and release occurs to the downstream region. The simulation model and method applied can be used for capacity evaluation of future infiltration storages on highly pervious areas in Jeju-do.
In this paper, wind induced aerodynamic loads on a standard tall building have been evaluated through large-eddy simulation (LES) technique. The flow parameters of an open terrain were recorded from the downstream of an empty boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) and used to prescribe the transient inlet boundary of the LES simulations. Three different numerically generated inflow boundary conditions have been investigated to assess their suitability for LES. A high frequency pressure integration (HFPI) approach has been employed to obtain the wind load. A total of 280 pressure monitoring points have been systematically distributed on the surfaces of the LES model building. Similar BLWT experiments were also done to validate the numerical results. In addition, the effects of adjacent buildings were studied. Among the three wind field generation methods (synthetic, Simirnov's, and Lund's recycling method), LES with perturbation from the synthetic random flow approach showed better agreement with the BLWT data. In general, LES predicted peak wind loads comparable with the BLWT data, with a maximum difference of 15% and an average difference of 5%, for an isolated building case and however higher estimation errors were observed for cases where adjacent buildings were placed in the vicinity of the study building.
This paper focuses on the processes of wind flow in atmospheric boundary layer, to produce realistic full scale pressures for design of low-rise buildings. CFD with LES turbulence closure is implemented on a scale 1:1 prototype building. A proximity study was executed computationally in CFD with LES that suggests new recommendations on the computational domain size, in front of a building model, apart from common RANS-based guidelines (e.g., COST and AIJ). Our findings suggest a location of the test building, different from existing guidelines, and the inflow boundary proximity influences pressure correlation and reproduction of peak loads. The CFD LES results are compared to corresponding pressures from open jet, full scale, wind tunnel, and the ASCE 7-10 standard for roof Component & Cladding design. The CFD LES shows its adequacy to produce peak pressures/loads on buildings, in agreement with field pressures, due to its capabilities of reproducing the spectral contents of the inflow at 1:1 scale.

This research presents an streamflow modeling approach in a data-scarce estuary reservoir watershed which has been suffered from high salinity irrigation water problem after completion of land reclamation project in South Korea. Since limited hydrology data was available on the Iwon estuary reservoir watershed, water balance relation of the reservoir was used to estimate runoff from upstream of the reservoir. Water balance components in the reservoir consists precipitation, inflow from upstream, discharge through sluice, and evaporation. Estimated daily inflow data, which is stream discharge from upstream, shows a good consistency with the observed water level data in the reservoir in terms of EI (0.93) and $R^2$ (0.94), and were used as observed flow data for the streamflow modeling. HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran) was used to simulate hydrologic response of upstream of the reservoir. The model was calibrated and validated for the periods of 2006 to 2007 and 2008 to 2009, respectively, showing that values of EI and $R^2$ were 0.89 and 0.91 for calibration period, 0.71 and 0.84 for validation period.
High-resolution flows around a steep mountainous island (Ulleungdo) in Korea were simulated by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. To cover entire Ulleungdo and to resolve the topography around the Ulleungdo automatic synoptic observing system (ASOS) with high resolution, one-way nested grid system with large (60 m), and small (20 m) grid sizes was applied in the CFD model simulations. We conducted the numerical simulations for 16 inflow directions, and, for each inflow direction, we considered six different wind velocities(5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 m s-1) at the reference height (1,000 m). The effects of topography on surface wind observations were well reflected in the observed wind roses for the period of January 01, 2012 ~ December 31, 2016 at the Ulleungdo ASOS and marine buoy. Wind roses at the Ulleungdo ASOS was reproduced based on the CFD simulations. The changes in surface winds at the Ulleungdo ASOS caused by surrounding topography were relatively well simulated by the CFD model. The simulated wind-rose indicated that south-southwesterly and northeasterly were the dominant wind directions, which were also observed at the Ulleungdo ASOS. We investigated the flow characteristics around the Ulleungdo ASOS for northwesterly, south-southwesterly, and northeasterly winds in detail.
This study presents the numerical investigation of the trajectory of rocket launched from a helicopter. The nonlinear mathematical model of armed configuration of UH-60 helicopter was developed while Hydra 70 unguided rocket was modeled to simulate the rocket behavior. The effects of various inflow models on the launched rocket trajectory are obtained. Similarly, rocket launch simulation was performed to determine the unsafe flight maneuver condition where the rocket trajectory is critically close to the helicopter main rotor tip path plane.
