  • By testing the separation performance for a fine settleable solid removal system in an aquaculture system using polystyrene particles as an experimental substitute, the optimal geometric dimensions for a Low-Pressure Hydrocyclone (LPH) were obtained. The design approach far the LPH took into consideration two inflow diameters (Di: 30, 50 mm), three overflow diameters (Do: 60, 70, 100 mm) and four cylinder lengths (Lc: 250, 345, 442, 575 mm), while the cylinder diameter (Dc) at 335 mm, the underflow diameter (Du) at 50 mm and the cone angle (${\theta}$) at $68^{\circ}$ were kept constant. The separation performances of 19 different dimension combinations of LPH were tested, ranging from 300 to 1200 ml/sec of inflow rate using substitute polystyrene particles (0.4-0.7 mm dia., ${\rho}_s=1.05g/cm^3$). These polystyrene particles exhibit a similar density and settling velocity to the fine fecal debris of the common carp. The total separation efficiency for the inflow rate ranged from a high of 97% to a low of 20%. Experimental results obtained by ANCOVA and the Tukey test (${\alpha}=0.05$) showed that the separation performances of the LPH were significantly affected (P<0.05) by the fi, Di, Do and Lc. The maximum separation performance was detected at a dimension combination of 30 mm of inflow diameter (Di), 60 mm of overflow diameter (Do), 442 and 575 mm of cylinder length (Lc). The dimension proportions were 0.09, 1.32-1.72, 0.18 and 0.15 for Di/Dc, Lc/Dc, Do/Dc and Du/Dc respectively.

  • Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) which uses the temperature difference between warm surface sea-water and cold deep sea-water to produce electric power is the promising technology. OTEC is able to be utilized as the $CO_2$ reducing technology by using the consistent temperature differential, while the system efficiency is very low. Thus, the design and development of a efficient turbine is essential to improve the system efficiency for OTEC. In this study, a 100kW-class radial inflow turbine using R32 was designed for OTEC and this turbine's performance was estimated by analysis of CFD. According as the simulation results, turbine's geometry was corrected. The radial inflow turbine satisfying the requirements is designed by the repeated attempts.

  • A Combination Random Flow Generation (CRFG) technique for obtaining the fluctuating inflow boundary conditions for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is proposed. The CRFG technique was developed by combining the typical RFG technique with a novel calculation of k and ${\varepsilon}$ to estimate the length- and time-scales (l, ${\tau}$) of the target fluctuating turbulence field used as the inflow boundary conditions. Through comparatively analyzing the CRFG technique and other existing numerical/experimental results, the CRFG technique was verified for the generation of turbulent wind velocity fields with prescribed turbulent statistics. Using the turbulent velocity fluctuations generated by the CRFG technique, a series of LESs were conducted to investigate the wind flow around S-, R-, L- and U-shaped building models. As the pressures of the models were also measured in wind tunnel tests, the validity of the LES, and the effectiveness of the inflow boundary generated by the CRFG techniques were evaluated through comparing the simulation results to the wind tunnel measurements. The comparison showed that the LES accurately and reliably simulates the wind-induced pressure distributions on the building surfaces, which indirectly validates the CRFG technique in generating realistic fluctuating wind velocities for use in the LES. In addition to the pressure distribution, the LES results were investigated in terms of wind velocity profiles around the building models to reveal the wind flow dynamics around bluff bodies. The LES results quantitatively showed the decay of the bluff body influence when the flow moves away from the building model.

  • Aneurysm-mimicking findings were frequently visualized due to hemodynamical causes of dephasing effects around area of A-com artery during magnetic resonance angiography(MRA) and these kind of phenomena have not been clearly known yet. We investigated the hemodynamical patterns of dephasing effect around area of the A-com artery that might be a cause of false intracranial aneurysms on MRA. For experimental study, We used hand-made silicon phantoms of the asymmetric A-com artery as like a bifurcation configuration. In a closed circulatory system with UHDC computer driven cardiac pump system. MRA and fast digital subfraction angiography(DSA) involved the use of these phantoms. Flow patterns were evaluated with axial and coronal imaging of MRA(2D-TOF, 3D-TOF) and DSA of Phantoms constructed from an automated closed-type circulatory system filled with glycerol solution [circulation fluid(glycerol:water = 1:1.4)]. These findings were then compared with those obtained from computational fluid dynamic(CFD) for inter-experimental correlation study. Imaging findings of MRA, DSA and CFD on inflow zone according to the following: a) MRA demonstrated high signal intensity zone as inflow zone on silicon phantom; b) Patterns of DSA were well matched with MRA on trajectory of inflow zone; and c) CFD were well matched with MRA on the pattern of main flow. Imaging findings of MRA. DSA and CFD on turbulent flow zone according to the following: a) MRA demonstrated hyposignal intensity zone at shoulder and axillar zone of main inflow; b) DSA delineated prominent vortex flow at the same area. The hemodynamical causes of signal defect, which could Induce the false aneurysm on MRA, turned out to be dephasing effects at axilla area of bifurcation from turbulent flow as the results of MRA, DSA and CFD.

  • In this study, meteorological drought indices were examined to simulate hydrological drought. SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) and SPEI (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index) was applied to represent meteorological drought. Further, in order to evaluate the hydrological drought, monthly total inflow and SDI (Streamflow Drought Index) was computed. Finally, the correlation between meteorological and hydrological drought indices were analyzed. As a results, in monthly correlation comparison, the correlation between meteorological drought index and monthly total inflow was highest with 0.67 in duration of 270-day. In addition, a meteorological drought index were correlated 0.72 to 0.87 with SDI. In compared to the annual extremes, the relationship between meteorological drought index and minimum monthly inflow was hardly confirmed. But SDI and SPEI showed a slightly higher correlation. There are limitation that analyze extreme hydrological drought using meteorological drought index. For the evaluation of the hydrological drought, drought index which included inflow directly is required.

  • This study focused on the aerodynamic loads of the horizontal axis wind turbine blade due to the normal turbulence inflow condition. Normal turbulence model (NTM) includes the variations of wind speed and direction, and it is characterized by turbulence intensity and standard deviation of flow fluctuation. IEC61400-1 recommends the fatigue analysis for the NTM and the normal wind profile (NWP) conditions. The aerodynamic loads are obtained at the blade hub and the low speed drive shaft for MW class horizontal axis wind turbine which is designed by using aerodynamically optimized procedure. The 6-components of aerodynamic loads are investigated between numerical results and load components analysis. From the calculated results the maximum amplitudes of oscillated thrust and torque for LSS with turbulent inflow condition are about 5~8 times larger than those with no turbulent inflow condition. It turns out that the aerodynamic load analysis with normal turbulence model is essential for structural design of the wind turbine blade.

  • Background Perforator flaps have led to a revolution in reconstructive surgery by reducing donor site morbidity. However, many surgeons have witnessed partial flap necrosis. Experimental methods to increase inflow have relied on adding a separate pedicle to the flap. The aim of our study was to experimentally determine whether increasing blood flow in the perforator pedicle itself could benefit flap survival. Methods In 30 male Lewis rats, an extended posterior thigh perforator flap was elevated and the pedicle was dissected to its origin from the femoral vessels. The rats were assigned to three groups: control (group I), acute inflow (group II) and arterial preconditioning (group III) depending on the timing of ligation of the femoral artery distal to the site of pedicle emergence. Digital planimetry was performed on postoperative day (POD) 7 and all flaps were monitored using laser Doppler flowmetry perioperatively and postoperatively in three regions (P1-proximal flap, P2-middle of the flap, P3-distal flap). Results Digital planimetry showed the highest area of survival in group II (78.12%±8.38%), followed by groups III and I. The laser Doppler results showed statistically significant higher values in group II on POD 7 for P2 and P3. At P3, only group II recorded an increase in the flow on POD 7 in comparison to POD 1. Conclusions Optimization of arterial inflow, regardless if performed acutely or as preconditioning, led to increased flap survival in a rat perforator flap model.

  • Environmental factors affect parts of the automobile. When dust particles are embedded, specially, friction and wear of the rubber-seal in automobile chassis system are increased. Increase in friction and wear leads to weakness of component and reduction of mechanical life. In this study, the wear characteristics of rubber-seal for inflow of dust particles are investigated. Silica($SiO_2$) and alumina($Al_2O_3$) particles are used as a dust particle because these particles are main elements of dust particles. The sliding wear tester are used for investigate the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the single dust particle($SiO_2$) is embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of dust particle size is more than that of inflow rate on the wear characteristics of rubber-seal. If the mixed dust particles are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the wear rate is increased as the rate of alumina that has a bigger hardness is increased. If the mixed dust particles that have different hardness are embedded in the rubber-seal component, the influence of particle size is more than that of particle hardness.

  • The distribution pattern of water quality parameters and phytoplankton biomass in upper inflow rivers of lake Paldang had surveyed. In North-Han river system, nutrient concentrations and algal biomass was below the standard of mesoand oligotrophy from lake Soyang to lake Paldang, maintaining good water quality, except the N5 site located near the Chuncheon-Si, showing high nutrients concentrations and algal biomass. The algal biomass of the South-Han river system showed oligotrophic level in the upstream near the lake Chungju, and increased along the flow direction showing eutrophic level in the downstream within the lake Paldang area. On the other hand, the highest concentrations of nutrients were detected in the middle stream near the Yeoju-Si and Yangpyung-Gun rather than in the downstream suggesting algal biomass in lake Paldang would not come from the upper river area but come from the growth within the lake area using nutrients from the upper inflow river.

  • This study presents the results on the changes of crucible thermal conductivity and inflow of Ar, and constructed the mathematical model about heat transfer into furnace. As process variables, simulation model was designated thermal conductivity of crucible to $0.5W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, $1W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, $2W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, $4W{\cdot}m^{-1}{\cdot}K^{-1}$, and inflow rate of Ar to 15 L/min, 30 L/min, 60 L/min. Initial condition and boundary condition were set respectively in two terms of process. Each initial conditions were set up by the preceding simulation of heat and fluid flow. The primary goal is the application of unidirectional growth of Si ingot using the result. In the result of the change of heat conductivity of crucible, the higher thermal conductivity of crucible shows the shorter solidification time and the bigger temperature difference. And the flow patterns are changed with the inflow rate of Ar. Finally, we found that the lower crucible's thermal conductivity, the better crucible is at polycrystalline Si ingot growth. But in case of Ar inflow, it is hard to say about good condition. This data will be evaluated as useful reference used in allied study or process variable control of production facilities.
