  • Observations on the influence of the fluid infiltration on the breakdown pressure during laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests, along with an analysis of the applicability of the breakdown pressure prediction for cylindrical samples using Quasi-static and Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics approaches were carried out. These approaches consider fluid infiltration through the so-called radius of fluid infiltration or crack radius, a parameter that is not a material property. Two sets of tests under pressurization rate controlled and injection rate controlled tests were used to evaluate the applicability of these methods. The difficulty of the estimation of the radius of fluid infiltration was solved by back calculating this parameter from an initial set of tests, and later, the obtained relationships were used to predict breakdown pressures for a second set of tests. The results showed better predictions for the injection rate than for the pressurization rate tests, with average errors of 3.4% and 18.6%, respectively. The larger error was attributed to differences in the testing conditions for the pressurization rate tests, which had different applied vertical pressures. On the other hand, for the tests carried out under constant injection rate, the Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics solution reported lower errors compared to the Quasi-static solution, with values of 3% and 3.8%, respectively. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis illustrated the influence of the radius of fluid penetration or crack radius and the tensile strength on the breakdown pressure, suggesting a need for a careful estimation of these values. Then, the calculation of breakdown pressure considering fluid infiltration in cylindrical samples under triaxial conditions is possible, although larger data sets are desirable to validate and derive better relations.

  • Spinel/zirconia-glass composites prepared by melt-infiltration were fabricated to investigate the effect of zirconia addition on mechanical and optical properties of the composites. The infiltration distance was parabolic with respect to time as described by the Washburn equation and the penetration rate constant, K, decreased due to the reduction in pore size as the amount of zirconia rose. Although the optimum strength(308 MPa) of the Spinel/zirconia-glass composites was observed when the zirconia was added up to 20 wt%, K and transmittance decreased as the zirconia content rose. In conclusion, it suggested that the positive effect of strength as a result of the addition of zirconia was not effective.

  • It is a research that free floating larva of Ruditapes philippinarum in compliance with infiltration flow of tidal accumulation and bottom-clinging system in high density also, It is a precondition this for the continuous augmentation of Ruditapes philippinarum resources. So in flow field of tidal the free floating larva produced the infiltration water tank that can possibly bottom-clinging and experiment the water tank which uses free floating larva, It evaluates that the acceleration effect of free floating larva by infiltration in objective. As a result, 1) The experiment on free floating larva's bottom sediment grain diameter came to be high recording as bottom-clinging rate at the static water field and even biologically it selects bottom-clinging substrate it will be able to confirm. 2) About occurrence of infiltration flow field is in case of that: the drift of a current 10cm/s, bottom sediment grain 1.21mm infiltration flow 0.3cm/s increase of 3~5 times was confirmed. 3) From free floating larva of Ruditapes philippinarum the choice of bottom sediment grain diameter depends in the biological factor and form the flow field the bottom-clinging acceleration effect was controled over physical stable condition. 4) In case of density of Ruditapes philippinarum free floating larva of sea area, bottom sediment grain diameter, flow condition which are very cleanly in the research that possibly could conjecture the free floating larva's bottom-clinging rate.

  • LID planning and application has been actively developed to reduce the runoff volume at increased impervious areas due to rapid urbanization. In this study, a performance and applicability evaluation was performed in an infiltration trench using the SWMM model, based on the experimental conditions for infiltration trenches. The infiltration trench application area was applied to 5~15% of the drainage area. The SWMM results of discharge and the BOD reduction efficiency were analyzed at a peak discharge of 45.7~61.9%, total discharge of 47.2~62.3%, and BOD load of 52.3~55.3. The discharge and BOD was estimated to be 12~24% higher and 37~38% smaller than the experimental results. This study can help in the application and performance evaluation of infiltration trenches.

  • For sand and zeolite filter media in stormwater BMPs, media breakage effects on infiltration were investigated. Compaction effort and infiltration force were mainly examined for breakage sources. The 1-D column infiltration tests for un-compacted and compacted media filters were conducted to investigate the breakage effect on infiltration. As a result, the following findings were deduced: 1) particle breakage due to filtration forces was found to be relatively minimal; 2) un-compacted media had lesser amount of crushed particles and permeability fluctuations compared to compacted media; 3) even without the presence of suspended solids in the influent, reduction in permeability was found, which resulted from rearrangement and re-entrainment of media particle itself; 4) only media particle breakage resistance is considered, sand was revealed to have better performance compared to zeolite media.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of sewerage facilities through I/I analysis by rainfall by selecting areas where storm overflow diverging chamber is remained due to the non-maintenance drainage equipment when the sewerage system was reconstructed as a separate sewer system. Research has shown that wet weather flow(WWF) increased from 106.2% to 154.8% compared to dry weather flow(DWF) in intercepting sewers, and that the WWF increased from 122.4% to 257.6% in comparison to DWF in storm overflow diverging chamber. As a result, owing to storm overflow diverging chamber of partially separate sewer system with untreated tributary of sewage treatment plant, rainfall-derived infiltration/inflow(RDII) has been analyzed 2.7 times higher than the areas without storm overflow diverging chamber. Meanwhile, infiltration quantity of this study area was relatively higher than that of other study areas. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce infiltration quantity through sewer pipe maintenance nearby river. Drainage equipment maintenance should be performed not to operate storm overflow diverging chamber in order to handle the appropriate sewage treatment plant capacity for rainfall because it is also expected that RDII due to rain will occur after maintenance. In conclusion, it is necessary to recognize aRDII(allowance of rainfall-derived infiltration/inflow) and to be reflected it on sewage treatment plant capacity because aRDII can occur even after maintenance to the complete separate sewer system.

  • To examine the optimal temperature, light intensity, and shell-type for shell-living conchocelis production, we tested the shell infiltration of free-living conchocelis fragments under various environmental conditions. Under a combination of various temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25 and 30℃) and light intensities (1, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 μmol m-2 s-1), the optimal infiltration conditions of the evaluated three Pyropia species were 20-25℃ and 5-80 μmol m-2 s-1 for P. yezoensis, 20-30℃ and 20-80 μmol m-2 s-1 for P. seriata, and 20-25℃ and 20-80 μmol m-2 s-1 for P. dentata. The infiltration efficiency of free-living conchocelis for different shell types was greater in Korean and Chinese oyster Crassostrea gigas shells than that in scallop Argopecten irradians and clam Meretrix lusoria shells. These results suggest that oyster shells are suitable substrates for shell-living conchocelis production. In conclusion, the present results for optimal infiltration conditions for free-living conchocelis of the three examined Pyropia species will contribute significantly to the production of stable shell-living conchocelis.

  • The effects of the fiber direction, specimen size and temperature on the compressive strength of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide composite (C/SiC composite) manufactured by liquid silicon infiltration(LSI) is investigated. Tests were conducted in accordance with ASTM C 695 at room temperature and elevated temperatures. Experiments are conducted with two different specimens considering grain direction. With grain (W/G) specimens have a carbon fibers parallel to the load direction, but across grain (A/G) specimens have a perpendicular carbon fibers. To verify the specimen size effect of C/SiC composite, two types of specimens are manufactured. One has a one to two ratio of diameter to height and the other has a one to one ratio. The compressive strength of C/SiC composite increased as temperature rise. As specimens are larger, compressive strength of A/G specimens increased, however compressive strength of W/G decreased.

  • Objective : Allergic asthma is a chronic airway disease that affects millions of people in the developed world. The disease is characterized by concurring airway inflammation, Th2 cytokine production, increased mucus secretion, airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) to inhaled antigen, and pulmonary fibrosis. To investigate the therapeutic and anti-asthmatic effects of Drynariae Rhizoma (DR), we examined the influence of DR on the development of pulmonary eosinophilic inflammation and airway hyperresponsiveness in a mouse model of allergic asthma. Methods : In this study, BALB/c mice were systemically sensitized to ovalbumin (OVA) followed intratracheally, intraperitoneally, and by aerosol allergen challenges. We investigated the effect of DR on airway hyperresponsiveness, pulmonary eosinophilic infiltration, various immune cell phenotypes, Th2 cytokine production and OVA specific IgE production in a mouse model of asthma. Results : In asthmatic mice, we found that DR.treated groups had suppressed eosinophil infiltration, allergic airway inflammation and AHR by suppressing the production of IL-5, IL-13 and OVA specific IgE. Conclusions : Our data suggest that the therapeutic mechanism by which DR effectively treats asthma is based on reductions of Th2 cytokines (IL-5), eotaxin, OVA-specific IgE production and eosinophil infiltration.
