  • Entrepreneurship development has increasingly become a global solution to address the problem of rising unemployment. Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) have become important tools in improving the economic performance and social well-being of nations. When universities and industry work together to push the boundaries of knowledge, they become a powerful engine for innovation and economic growth. This paper is based on focus group interviews and discussions conducted with key players involved in the HIT-Sandown-UNDP Business Incubation Programme in Harare Zimbabwe. The business incubation project sought to support young Zimbabweans to transform their technical prototypes into commercially and socially viable ventures. As a result, a total of 10 prototypes were refined and investor ready business plans were developed for capital sourcing purposes. It was only through the coming together of the partners that real transformation of the lives of the participants was achieved through learning valuable business skills, coaching and mentoring. University-industry partnerships are a useful vehicle of setting up sustainable business incubation centres.

  • The collaboration among academia, industry, and public research sector gains importance in these days. This is essential for implement competent regional and national innovation systems. There have been many governmental programs for activating collaboration among innovation actors. Most policy programs for collaboration have aimed at increasing S&T and innovation potential and constructing S&T infrastructure. However, Korea has not produced a sufficient level of collaboration, especially on regional level. Most policy programs could not reach regions and many regions have no enough innovation actors. In order to activate R&D collaboration, therefore, we suggest that Korean S&T community should build and implement "collaborative research centers" all over the regions. This concept is very new approach, especially because it focuses on collaboration among regional innovation actors. In this paper, we discuss a concept, type, and execution strategy of collaboration research centers. We expect that these centers will play an important role in implementing successful regional innovation systems, as they will link regional innovation actors very closely.

  • The Korean venture industry showed a rapid growth due to various government incentive measures, development in information technology, and explosive growth of the KOSDAQ market. Recently, however, the Korean venture industry has revealed numerous side effects, which seemed to be coming from excessively aggressive government involvement in the industry, and fallen into a deep depression. This phenomenon may imply that the Korean venture industry has been established by the government policy rather than based on the venture capital market, whereas the venture industry in advanced nations has grown up autogenously based on it. This paper analyzes the Korean venture capital market and suggests policy recommendations to revitalize the domestic venture capital market. They include facilitating the supply of funds through limited partnerships and overseas venture capital, extending the direct equity investment, and actively promoting the KOSDAQ market.
