  • The influence of $P_2O_5$ on clinker mineral composition and the cement quality was investigated. When the sewage sludge was used as a raw material in place of clay, the presence of $P_2O_5$ in sewage sludge affects the mineral composition and the clinker quality. As the $P_2O_5$ concentration in raw mix increases, the burnability of clinker becomes worse and the alite decomposes into belite and free-CaO, so belite increases with the decrease of alite. The early strength of mortar decreases with the increase of $P_2O_5$ concentration. On the other hand, later-age strength increases with the increase of belite content. The setting time of cement was delayed with the $P_2O_5$ concentration above 0.6 wt%.

  • To estimate the combustion characteristics of sewage sludge and wood pellet, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was conducted. As TGA results, combustion characteristics of sewage sludge was worse than wood pellet. In ash fusion temperature (AFT) analysis, slagging tendency of sewage sludge is very high compared to wood pellet. And also, the bubbling fluidized bed reactor with a inner diameter 400 mm and a height of 4300 mm was used for experimental study of combustion characteristics fueled by sewage sludge and wood pellet. The facility consists of a fluidized bed reactor, preheater, screw feeder, cyclone, ash capture equipment and gas analyzer. The thermal input of sewage sludge cases were $54.5{\sim}96.5kW_{th}$, in case of wood pellet experiment, it was $96.1kW_{th}$. As experiment results, the $NO_x$ emission of sewage sludge was averagely about 10 times the $NO_x$ emission of wood pellet. And also CO emission of sewage sludge is about 3.5 times of wood pellet. Lastly as a result of analysis of captured ash in cyclone, the combustion efficiency of all cases were over 99%, but the potential for slagging/fouling was high at all cases by component analysis of ash.

  • The industrial-scale biological treatment of Chinese nutgall processing wastewater was conducted with a $200m^3$ expanded granular sludge bed reactor and a $900m^3$ bio-contact oxidation reactor. The temperature of the two reactors was controlled under mesophilic conditions ($32-40^{\circ}C$), through changing the proportion of the dilution water, which was composed of steam condensation water and residual circulating water. The effluent COD, gallic acid, chroma, total nitrogen, total phosphorus levels and pH of both the expanded granular sludge bed and bio-contact oxidation reactors were monitored. In addition, the redox potential in the expanded granular sludge bed was recorded. The total COD removal efficiency was 87.257% when the influent COD concentration was $14\;251{\pm}3\;148mg/L$, and the ratio of wastewater: dilution water was 1:5. The removal efficiencies of gallic acid, chroma, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were 72.221%, 43.940%, 64.151% and 39.316%, respectively. The effluent pH increased in either the expanded granular sludge bed reactor or the bio-contact oxidation reactor during the operation. The redox potential in the expanded granular sludge bed varied between -367 mV and -435 mV. The results indicate that the combined process was suitable for treating Chinese nutgall processing wastewater.

  • The performance of the small scale cyclone incinerate system (100kg/hr) to process the sewage sludge containing high moisture is evaluated. The incinerate system design is based on properties of the domestic sewage sludge. The combustion characteristics of the incinerate system is tested and analyzed with the various operation conditions of the moisture level, the sludge feed rate and the auxiliary fuel feed rate. The pressure loss of the whole system is appeared relatively small of 700mmAq under the normal operating condition and the temperature distribution of the incinerator internal combustion is maintained less than 1000C. Auxiliary fuel of 4.7 1/hr is required to incinerate 100kg sludge which include 87% moisture. Because the inside temperature of the incinerator is maintained less than $1000^{\circ}C$, it is predicted that the most NOx measured is produced not from the heat during the combustion process but from the oxidation of the N ingredient in the sludge. From the component analysis of ash, the organic matter is not entirely detected. Accordingly, it is estimated that the complete combustion has been accomplished in the incinerator.

  • The stone sludge produced during the manufacturing process of stone blocks is considered as one of industrial waste materials. This stone sludge are managed to either burying under the ground or stacking in the yard, but this disposal process is required an extra costs. The stone sludge disposal like burying or stacking also cause environmental pollutions such as ground pollution and subterranean water pollution. Thus, this study was conducted to explore the possibility of recycling of stone dust sludge as a concrete mixing material in order to extend recycling methods and to solve the shortage of aggregate caused by recently increased demand in construction. Based on the experiment results on various ratios of cement to stone sludge content, the compressive strengths of concrete were recorded in the range of $20{\sim}30N/mm2$. The results did not show any decrease in compressive strength due to the stone dust content. It can be concluded that the stone sludge produced by stone block manufacturing can be sufficiently recycled as one of concrete mixing materials in the aspect of compressive strength.

  • Magnetite and inorganic sludge were mainly composed of $Fe_2O_4$ and $Fe_2O_3$, respectively. Initial specific surface areas of magnetite and inorganic sludge were 130 $m^2$/g and 31.7 $m^2$/g. $CO_2$ decomposition rate for inorganic sludge was increased with temperature. Maximum $CO_2$ decomposition rates were shown 89% for magnetite at $350^{\circ}C$ and 84% for inorganic sludge at $500^{\circ}C$. Specific surface area for magnetite was not varied significantly after $CO_2$ decomposition. However, specific surface area for inorganic sludge was greatly decreased from initial 130 $m^2$/g to approximately 50~60 $m^2$/g after reaction. Therefore, it was estimated that magnetite could be used for $CO_2$decomposition for a long time and inorganic sludge should be wasted after $CO_2$ decomposition reaction.

  • Powdered marble wastes (PMW) generated by Utique marble cutting industries (North of Tunisia) with abundant amounts were used in this study as low-cost materials to investigate the stabilization of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Fe) in sludge generated from a local Zn-Electroplating factory. Powdered marble wastes were evaluated by means of chemical fractions of heavy metals in sludge and concentrations of heavy metals in leachate from columns to determine their ability to stabilize heavy metals in contaminated sludge. Results indicated that chemical fractions of heavy metals in sludge were affected by application of the PMW mineral materials and pH, however, the effects varied with heavy metals. Application of the powdered marble wastes mineral materials reduced exchangeable metals in the sequence of Pb (60.5%)>Fe (40.5%)>Zn (30.1%). X-ray diffraction and hydro-geochemical transport code PHREEQC analysis were successfully carried out to get a better understanding of the mechanisms of reactive mineral phases involved in reduced exchangeable heavy metals in sludge after PMW material amendments. Therefore, metal immobilization using powdered marble wastes materials is an effective stabilization technique for industrial metallic hydroxide sludge.

  • Recently, environmental pollution related to global warming is on the rise. Meanwhile, renewable energy is a representative example of many efforts to develop eco-friendly energy to solve the depletion of natural resources and the depletion of petroleum resources in conjunction with global warming. Among them, photovoltaic power generation is increasing the subsidies for the government to increase the production of photovoltaic electricity of the general public, showing a high growth rate. However, polysilicon, which is a raw material of the photovoltaic panel, generates waste called polysilicon sludge in the manufacturing process. In order to produce 1 ton of polysilicon, about 2 tons of waste polysilicon sludge is generated. In 2012, polysilicon sludge was generated at 78,000 tons, with an average of about 220 tons per day. The sludge generated due to insufficient treatment of polysilicon sludge is currently solidified and is processed by landfilling. Therefore, in this study, polysilicone sludge is used as the concept of admixture, and the physical properties of the matrix according to the polysilicon sludge replacement ratio based on light burned magnesia is determined.

  • The effects of temperature, initial $Pb^{2+}$concentration and initial sludge concentration on the initial $Pb^{2+}$ removal rate and maximal $Pb^{2+}$removal amounts in activated sludge, respectively, were investigated. The removal of $Pb^{2+}$ in activated sludge was proved to be temperature-dependent process. The initial $Pb^{2+}$ removal rate increased from 187.5 to 261.4 mg $Pb^{2+}$/g sludge dry weight min, in response to the promoted temperature from 1$0^{\circ}C$ to 6$0^{\circ}C$, while the maximal $Pb^{2+}$removal amount (78.5 mg $Pb^{2+}$/g sludge dry weight) occurred at 30t . As the initial $Pb^{2+}$concentration increased from 36 to 228 mg $Pb^{2+}$/L at the constant temperature of 30C and initial sludge concentration of 1.5 g sludge dry weight/L, the time to reach an equilibrium state was almost independent of the initial $Pb^{2+}$concentration and the equilibrium $Pb^{2+}$/removal amount was increased Irom 41.9 to 73.6 mg $Pb^{2+}$/g sludge dry weight. On the contrary, the equilbrium $Pb^{2+}$ emoval amount was decreased from 87.7 to 65.3 mg $Pb^{2+}$/g sludge dry weight as the in- crease of initial sludge concentration from 0.22 to 1.76 g sludge dry weight/L.

  • Possibility of the usage of sludge generated in coal mine drainage treatments as a briquette additive was investigated by the combination of industrial, elemental, and combustion experiments. A series of briquettes having 2% and 6% of sludge were used for the experiments. Compared to the control sample, our results show that all experimental values for the briquettes are very similar. In particular, it is worthy to note that there is no obvious difference in calorific values for the briquettes containing 2% or 6% of sludge. The calorific values are 4,250~4,360 kcal/kg, 4,240~4,250 kcal/kg, 4,180~4,210 kcal/kg, and 4,270~4,360 kcal/kg for the control sample, briquette containing 6% of Hambaek sludge, briquette containing 6% of Hamtae sludge, and briquette containing 2% of Hambaek sludge, respectively. Results of ash fusion temperature show that the temperature is greater than $1,550^{\circ}C$ for the control sample. However, the temperature for the briquettes with 6% of Hambaek sludge and 2% of Hambaek or Hamtae sludge is $1,510^{\circ}C$. For a briquette containing 6% of Hamtae sludge, the temperature of ash fusion is $1,530^{\circ}C$. After combustion, environmental impacts of the briquettes with sludge were tested. Little environmental influence was observed for the combusted briquettes with sludge.
